One person was killed Monday morning in a single vehicle crash on Solana Road in Ponte Vedra Beach, according to the St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office (SJSO). The driver was identified as Austen Stoddard Jenney, 22, of Ponte Vedra. The accident on Aug. 20 took place at the 500 block of Solana Road, east of the entrance to Marsh Landing Country Club. Chuck Mulligan, the community affairs bureau commander for SJSO, said the vehicle was traveling westbound as it entered the curve of the road. He said Jenney continued straight instead of turning and struck a concrete post. The car proceeded to overturn and then collide with a tree. Mulligan said Jenney’s vehicle struck the tree so hard that the engine and transmission were both ejected from the car. Due to the damage to the vehicle, Mulligan said speed was a significant factor in the crash. He noted the vehicle was discovered early in the morning around sunrise but that the exact time of the crash is unknown. As a result of the crash, a portion of Solana Road was closed for several hours. District 4 St. Johns County School Board Member Kelly Barrera met with local parents at the Plantation at Ponte Vedra Beach’s Beach Club Monday, Aug. 20 to discuss some of the key challenges the school district is facing and how she intends to address them if re-elected to another term. Listing St. Johns County’s continued growth as a major issue for the district, Barrera said she is currently pushing for a new high school to be built. “One of my huge priorities is to have a new high school, because I feel like we’ve already built K-8s, we built Picolata Crossing, we’re expanding Mill Creek Academy right now, but we haven’t done high school,” she said. “And I don’t think that’s the only school that needs to Photos by Samantha Logue District 4 St. Johns County School Board Member Kelly Barrera discusses growth, academics be built. Mark Refosco

Can you please briefly tell us about your background? I went to a small college in West Virginia and studied civil engineering and architecture. I worked for three years for an architect while in school and for a year afterwards. I decided to move to a sunnier spot, which brought me to beau- tiful Northeast Florida. I got in the homebuilding business early on with a great company, Summer Homes by Charlie Brown. I enjoyed five years with that company and then the next 10 years as an executive with another large company in North- east Florida, building beautiful homes. I ultimately decided to go out on my own, and I joined the Arthur Rutenberg Homes franchise network in January 2001 and have never looked back. What’s your involvement with EvenTide? What can you tell us about the new neighborhood? Arthur Rutenberg Homes is a preferred builder in EvenTide, which is a beautiful enclave of only 23 homesites near the Guana Preserve and right across the street from a private beach. Residents in the community will have deeded beach access. What’s not to love about EvenTide and its posi- tioning in the heart of Ponte Vedra. What are the latest trends in home building? We used to do a lot of Mediterranean-style architecture, and the market has shifted to more coastal, West Indies-style architecture. The West Indies style consists of different versions, includ- ing Spanish Indies, French Indies, British Indies, Dutch Indies and more. What we’re focusing on in EvenTide is the British West Indies style of archi- tecture, which features larger overhangs, combina- tion sloped roofs, lots of windows, shutters, etc. What do you enjoy most about working in your industry? Our industry has a new challenge every single day, and that’s what keeps me sharp. I really like working with the team that we have in our com- pany. We have about 28 employees. We handle everything from architecture to interior design to homebuilding itself. It’s so exciting for me to work with all of those different disciplines, having gone to school for architecture and engineering. What are your favorite parts about Ponte Vedra? It’s a great spot. We have excellent restaurants and excellent shopping. It’s a low traffic area. It’s a beautiful place to live. I also enjoy being sur- rounded by the water. What do you like to do in your free time? I like to go look at houses and architecture, but I also enjoy boating and spending time with my family. My wife and I have four children and four grandsons. We’re looking forward to more grandchildren.
