At long last I can get down to typing this newsletter. October was a busy month with the ANPSA conference and seminar in Adelaide and travelling north into NSW to meet up with Southern Highlands members and relatives. There are benefits in travelling in that you get to see some of the Hakeas in the wild and catch up with some of the Hakea Study Group members and local group members. Just north of Goulburn in a way side stop I had the pleasure of finding Hakea sericea and Hakea dactyloides, the latter quite visible on the side of the highway as it was in flower. Further north at Point Bonney near Port Macquarie there is a reserve that has a big population of Hakea teretifolia ssp. hirsuta and when it is in flower the masses of white are very striking even on a dull day. It does not seem long since the June newsletter was sent out, however there is a lot to report on. Vale Geoff Cooke. Geoff was a member of the Bairnsdale Group in Victoria and an avid Hakea grower and propagator. His previous garden of about five acres at Wiseleigh had over 100 Hakea species and he was always on the lookout to discover populations of Hakeas in the East Eippsland area. Over the past ten years Geoff had two major open heart operations and the specialist had advised him to take it easy. -

AUSTRALIAN NATIVE PLANTS SOCIETY, AUSTRALIA HAKEA STUDY GROUP NEWSLETER No. 45 FEBRUARY 2011 ISSN0727 - 7008 Leader: Paul Kennedy PO Box220 Strathmerton, Victoria. 3641 E mail [email protected] Dear members, It is the beginning of February here at Strathmerton and muggy weather prevails, which we are not used to, usually dry summer heat, but this summer has been one of the wettest. We had 118mm in December, 100mm in January and by the end of February another 115mm. We finished 2010 with 800mm of rain, the second wettest on record. Some places, one hundred klms. to the west of us had over 250mm of rain in January which brought about the floods in the north west of the state that are now draining into the Murray River which already is in moderate flood. Many of our members in Queensland and Central Victoria have experienced record breaking floods and rains and now our north Queensland members a cyclone as well. In this issue I plan to say something about how the Hakeas have survived these dramatic climatic conditions. After so many years of drought, to receive nearly double our average rainfall in 2010 was a great relief. However the effect it would have on our native arboretum was quite astonishing. For the first six months, plants just sat and soaked it in, then, with the rain continuing into spring, most plants put on a big flush of new growth and flowering. Some of the Hakeas such as newbeyana, adnata and francisiana had what appeared to be dead branches but new growth has now appeared on them. -

Asaduzzaman Prodhan Tel: +61 430079374 E-mail: [email protected]; [email protected]; [email protected] 1 Abstract Hakea prostrata (Proteaceae) has evolved in an extremely phosphorus- (P) limited environment. This species exhibits an exceptionally low ribosomal RNA (rRNA) and low protein and nitrogen (N) concentration in its leaves. Little is known about the N requirement of this species, and its link to P metabolism, despite this being the key to understanding how it functions with a minimal P budget. Hakea prostrata plants were grown with various N supplies. Metabolite and elemental analyses were performed to determine its N requirement. Hakea prostrata maintained its organ N content and concentration at a set-point, independent of a 25-fold difference nitrate supplies. This is in sharp contrast to plants that are typically studied, which take up and store excess nitrate. Plants grown without nitrate had lower leaf chlorophyll and carotenoid concentrations, indicating N deficiency. However, H. prostrata plants at low or high nitrate availability had the same photosynthetic pigment levels, and hence were not physiologically compromised by the treatments. The tight control of nitrate acquisition in H. prostrata retains protein at a very low level, which results in a low demand for rRNA and P. -

Biodiversity Summary for NRM Regions Species List What is the summary for and where does it come from? This list has been produced by the Department of Sustainability, Environment, Water, Population and Communities (SEWPC) for the Natural Resource Management Spatial Information System. The list was produced using the AustralianAustralian Natural Natural Heritage Heritage Assessment Assessment Tool Tool (ANHAT), which analyses data from a range of plant and animal surveys and collections from across Australia to automatically generate a report for each NRM region. Data sources (Appendix 2) include national and state herbaria, museums, state governments, CSIRO, Birds Australia and a range of surveys conducted by or for DEWHA. For each family of plant and animal covered by ANHAT (Appendix 1), this document gives the number of species in the country and how many of them are found in the region. It also identifies species listed as Vulnerable, Critically Endangered, Endangered or Conservation Dependent under the EPBC Act. A biodiversity summary for this region is also available. This includes all mammals, birds, reptiles, frogs and fish, 137 families of vascular plants (over 15,000 species) and a range of invertebrate groups. All species names have been confirmed as valid species names, but it is not possible to confirm all species locations. -
