Orenthal James Simpson is widely recognized as the ‘Trial of the Century’ due to the heavy publicity and public interest it generated. Each of the trial’s prominent courtroom actors would face constant media attention throughout the trial. But the scrutiny was different for Marcia Clark, the lead prosecutor and sole female trying the case. Both inside and outside of the courtroom, Clark’s appearance would receive uniquely extensive attention, occasionally being admired, although more frequently it was criticized. After the trial Clark laughed off the notion that she tried to play along—changing her appearance to appease her critics. Yet any individual observing the trial can see that her appearance, and demeanor, did change. Additionally, Clark admits she made certain changes to her appearance. Clark’s inconsistent appearance evidences an internal dilemma she experienced during the trial: whether to respond to the attention her appearance was garnering by changing herself to appease her critics, or to ignore it, remaining unchanged. Clark was put in the double-bind that has hindered many women lawyers and professionals. We rely on the media to give us our news, to provide entertainment and to educate us. However, in order to form an objective, broadcasted media has been strategically modified to persuade the nations opinions on public situations. Forms of media manipulation stem from sources such as news coverages and tabloid magazines. These outlets are used for entertainment purposes and may twist events or stories to sway an audience's opinion and to attract more followers to their media platform. Race and gender are also factors that can be used to influence and shape one's opinions. Race and gender can allow an audience to relate to a situation or cloud their judgement due to the presence of discrimination. A prime example of a national story that was influenced by the media, as well as racial and gender discrimination, in order to control the public's opinion and knowledge would be the live, broadcasted trial “People of the State of California v. Orenthal James Simpson”. The media had an impact on how society viewed the outcome of the case, the lawyers, the victims and the defendant. Before the trial had begun, NBC deemed that the 75-mile, white Bronco police chase was more important for viewers to watch than the 1994 NBA Finals, which it interrupted.

Whitley in 1967 • O.J. had three children with Marguerite o their daughter Aaren Lashone died just before her birthday at age 2 (1979) • O.J. and Marguerite got a divorce in 1979 • Before he got a divorce, O.J. met Nicole Brown, who was 17 years old • In 1985 O.J. and Nicole were married o together they had two children • In 1992, Nicole filed for divorce o Nicole had often complained that O.J. was abusive towards her (which O.J. always denied) When, where, what? • Murder occurred on June 12th, 1994 • Nicole Brown and Ronald Goldman were found dead outside Nicole Brown’s luxury condominium • 875 Bundy Drive • (Supposedly) OJ Simpson brutally stabbed Nicole Brown and Ronald Goldman to death • Ronald Goldman was there just to drop off Nicole Brown’s sunglasses • He was in the wrong place at the wrong time Victims Nicole Brown • She was born in Frankfurt, Germany in 1959; moved with her family to Southern California as a toddler • She was working as a waitress when she met O.J.
