WQLN Public Broadcasting of Northwest Pennsylvania 2013/2014 Annual Report 1 WQLN Public Media Overview

I remember the big moments in PBS’s history as a series of television programs forever linked to the people I was with at the time I was watching TV. In the early 1970s it was my mom, her sisters, and Upstairs Downstairs. That was followed by Carl Sagan, my new Greek in-laws, and Cosmos. The years that followed were full of This Old House, Sesame Street, Carmen Sandiego, Ken Burns, and my wife, Fran, & our kids. For us WQLN’s program schedule over the past 47 years was a showcase of just how good television can be. It can unite, engage, and entertain.

If you were to compare those long-gone schedules with what’s on TV today, something immediately becomes clear. Today’s programming is much, much better. We are experiencing a Golden Age – let’s call it “the good old days of public broadcasting”. Programs like The Elegant Universe, Curious George, Breathless, Call the , and Peg + Cat are setting the new norms for in-home and on-the-go quality entertainment.

And please don’t think WQLN TV is alone in this renaissance of the local airwaves. WQLN Radio, too, has been reinvesting in on-air programming and infrastructure. Today WQLN Radio creates more original programming than any other radio station in Erie, in addition to the many nationally and internationally produced offerings you’ll read about in the following pages.

While most media outlets are contracting inside of 21st century models of long distance corporate ownership, WQLN Public Media is thriving as a local company owned by people who watch and listen. And because WQLN’s programming is backed by a rich educational community, we are not only thriving but also changing the lives of the people who use our services.

As a lifelong learner, PBS fills my need for input and reflection on health, science, news, music and the arts, history, travel, gardening, nature, and biographical insights about people and their civilizations. –Janet M.

JazzFlight [on WQLN Radio] is a testament to the excellence capable from human achievement, like the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel or holing a chip shot. –Charles J.

Thank you for taking the time to review our 2013/2014 Annual Report of WQLN Public Media, your public broadcasting station.

WQLN Public Broadcasting of Northwest Pennsylvania 2013/2014 Annual Report 2 WQLN Public Media The New WQLN

In 2014 WQLN Public Media completed its rebranding initiative, including the premiere of the new WQLN Public Media, WQLN Education, WQLN TV, and WQLN Radio logos, and website redesign of www.WQLN.org. This new look and feel helped launch the next chapter of WQLN Public Media. But it’s much more than a new look. It’s new leadership. It’s more signature programming and fewer membership pledge drive days. It’s refocussing on bringing viewers and listeners the best, most thoughtful television and radio programs that help to cultivate minds and foster engagement with each other and the community. All of this, as Marketing & Multimedia Manager DaWayne Cleckley points out, is the engine that drives the Ferrari, which makes what follows a look under the hood.

WQLN Public Broadcasting of Northwest Pennsylvania 2013/2014 Annual Report 3 WQLN TV Antenna Project

After completion of our TV antenna project in mid-June 2013, many viewers on the fringes of our reception area experienced an improved signal. The new antenna propagates the TV signal differently, however, meaning that because the waves bounce differently some viewers’ antennas needed to be adjusted to a different position.

Millcreek Government Channel

WQLN Public Media began managing Millcreek Township’s community channels 8 and 9 in January 2014.

Quality Programming

Always Dramatic

Downton Abbey Season 4 posed as many questions, twists, and turns (and scathing remarks by the Dowager Countess) as it solved! Last Tango in Halifax returned for another season of mature family drama. And Sundays featured new dramas from Masterpiece, including The Paradise, an adaptation of the beloved French novel by Emile Zola.

Front Row Center

The PBS Arts Fall Festival took viewers to Brooklyn, Nashville, and around the world in October and November with front-row seats and backstage passes to America’s premier living room stage. Performances included Moby Dick from San Francisco Opera, Stephen Sondheim’s Company with the New York Philharmonic from Great Performances, Barbra Streisand: Back to Brooklyn, and many more throughout its seven weeks of sensational Friday nights. And Great Performances’ four-part series The Hollow Crown combined Shakespeare’s Richard II, Henry IV (Parts I & II), and Henry V into a single chronological narrative.

Alice Walker’s 70th birthday was honored with American Masters’ Alice Walker: Beauty in Truth.

In June 2014, WQLN announced the rebirth of its original performance series Sounds Around Town, popular through the 1980s and 90s. This time, the series would include live concerts by local musicians, pond-side on the WQLN campus, that would be produced for later television and radio broadcast.

Community-Minded

The WQLN TV Original Series Erie Now: Inspiring Action launched in December 2013 as a public affairs television program welcoming regional experts to discuss Erie’s Vital Signs. And WQLN TV helped prepare viewers for the polls with the 2013 Erie County Executive Debate and Pennsylvania’s 50th State Senate District Debate.

WQLN Public Broadcasting of Northwest Pennsylvania 2013/2014 Annual Report 4 The Best in Science

Hosted by paleobiologist Dr. Neil Shubin, the series Your Inner Fish explored the hundreds of millions of years over which the human body became the quirky machine it is today. NOVA featured explorations of architectural and cultural enigmas the Roman catacombs, the Renaissance Duomo, and Easter Island moai statues. We also explored how things are made faster, colder, and safer with the multi-part NOVA series Making Stuff with David Pogue.

Always Educational

Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood premiered in September 2013 to help teach preschoolers the social skills needed to ensure growth, learning, and active engagement with others. Daniel’s “imagination moments”, sing-alongs, fun, and fantasy continue to teach self-control, listening, and positive self-esteem.

Peg + Cat (that’s “Peg Plus Cat”) premiered in fall 2013. The animated preschool series follows the adventures of Peg and Cat as they solve word problems using math exercises, addressing the increased need to focus on STEM skills early in a child’s education.

And for grown-ups, Charlie Rose returned to his 5pm slot, bringing viewers interviews with the greatest thinkers anywhere, from historian Simon Schama, to actress Tilda Swinton, to computer scientist Jaron Lanier, and discussing topics from global politics, to poetry, to contemporary counterculture.

The WQLN Original Series Healthy Living Kitchen, the first-ever HD cooking show produced in the Erie area, ended its first season in November 2013.

With support from WNET New York and in partnership with Mercyhurst University, WQLN TV produced the original two-part series Perspective: Jewish History, shaped by internationally renowned scholars who explored the marginalization of the Jews from the early Roman Empire through the late 20th century. The project also included a student essay contest, a free community screening coupled with a live discussion with experts on Jewish history, and a series of WQLN Radio interstitials.

Beginning in September, PBS added Genealogy Roadshow to Monday nights, combining history and science to uncover surprising family stories from four U.S. cities. Latino Americans and Henry Louis Gates, Jr.’s, series The African Americans: Many Rivers to Cross further highlighted the breadth and depth of the heritage stories of our nation.

The epic 5-part series The Story of the Jews with Simon Schama took viewers back 3,000 years to the emergence of a tribal people and continued through the Middle Ages, Enlightenment, and the 20th century, illustrating events and characters unique to Jewish history, but demonstrating a history shared, in many ways, by all of us.

We celebrated Black History Month with programs about the differences that separate us and the bonds that unify us in Mississippi ReMixed, The People’s March on Washington, and The Civic Life of Nathaniel Colley.

A Raisin in the Sun Revisited: The Raisin Cycle at CenterStage explored the concept – and misconceptions – of who “owns” the American dream.

In June 2013 TV’s most-watched history series explored the hot and deadly summer of 1964 on Freedom Summer: American Experience.

WQLN Public Broadcasting of Northwest Pennsylvania 2013/2014 Annual Report 5 And we commemorated the anniversary of the assassination of JFK with Kennedy Memories, American Experience: JFK, NOVA: Cold Case JFK, and Secrets of the Dead’s return to Walter Cronkite’s reporting on the tragic event.

PBS launched its Stories of Service initiative which included Coming Back, the documentary from U.S. Army veteran Wes Moore, detailing veterans’ experiences as they reintegrate with civilian life.

And Frontline: League of Denial – The NFL’s Concussion Crisis premiered in October 2013, after WQLN partnered with Edinboro University to host a public preview screening and expert panel discussion of this award winning Frontline series that shed light on the true health hazards that pro- and amateur footballers face.

Indie House

The series Independent Lens and POV continued to bring cutting-edge documentary films to WQLN’s audience. The 2013-2014 season included What We Need Is the Impossible!, a program of shorts by Sam Green; Cafeteria Man; Abel Raises Cain; Dislecksia: The Movie; Runaway (Udhao); and many others.

WQLN Public Broadcasting of Northwest Pennsylvania 2013/2014 Annual Report 6 WQLN Radio Different is Good

Every week, WQLN Radio creates more original local radio programming than any other radio station in the Erie media market. WQLN Radio continues to be listeners’ source for news, classics, and jazz, plus a lot more. To those treasures, we added many “big-city” offerings with our Saturday Matinee and Sunday Brunch lineups that premiered in October to the overwhelming praise of our listeners.

But WQLN Radio is more than recorded music; we also feature live performances from local, regional, and international artists who regularly appear on the Get Your Phil at Noon Summer Series, The WQLN Radio Lobby Performance Series, and on our WQLN Radio Recital Series.

Quality Programming

New Weekend Lineup

Beginning October 5, we brought back programs that our listeners said they never stopped missing: The Thistle and Shamrock Celtic music showcase and the quirky quiz-show Wait Wait . . . Don’t Tell Me! We introduced acclaimed shows that already had a fan base in major cities across the U.S., including World Café, a showcase for alternative music; TED Radio Hour, the fastest growing show in the history of NPR, rife with provocative questions and answers about technology, entertainment, and design; Studio 360, the Peabody Award winning guide to pop culture; Mountain Stage, with guest musicians including Tift Merritt, Ani DiFranco, and Norah Jones; and The Dinner Party, an hour of conversation, jokes, odd stories, and celebrity guests, which Wallpaper Magazine calls “one of the top 40 reasons to live in the U.S.A.”

Prairie Home Companion, Whad’ya Know?, and other favorites remain a centerpiece of the weekend lineup. Listeners have told us they appreciate the familiar but have also found new favorites that keep their listening hours feeling fresh, exciting, and deeply rewarding.

The WQLN Radio Lobby Performance Series

Whenever the Erie Philharmonic or the Mercyhurst Institute for Arts & Culture brings a nationally known classical performer to Erie, WQLN Radio previews the performance by staging a mini concert in our lobby. In FY14, these Lobby Performances were hosted by classical music host Wally Faas and President/CEO Tom New, and broadcast live on the radio. The WQLN Radio Lobby Performance Series has become very popular. The concerts are unique because audience size is limited and after each show the audience is welcome to meet the performer.

In October, husband and wife duo The Bengsons gave a rocking Lobby Performance, including a preview of their indie-rock opera, Hundred Days. December welcomed TUBACHRISTMAS low brass players Dan Burdick, Ron Stitt, Gary Viebranz, and Lowell Hepler. March saw a duo of concertmasters: Noah Bendix-Balgley of the Pittsburgh Symphony and Ken Johnston of the Erie Philharmonic came together for a precursor to their Erie Phil performance of David Stock’s Taking Sides: Concerto for Two Violins, commissioned for the Philharmonic’s 100th anniversary. And in April we featured the sibling group the Ahn Trio, with violinist Angela Ahn, Lucia Ahn on piano, and Maria Ahn on cello, with a repertoire of pieces as diverse as Shostakovich and The Doors.

WQLN Public Broadcasting of Northwest Pennsylvania 2013/2014 Annual Report 7 The WQLN Radio Recital Series

Up-and-coming musicians also have a home on WQLN Radio. They’re the inspiration behind The WQLN Radio Recital Series, showcasing the stars of tomorrow. Grace Nowak, Tara Rae, Christopher Tobin, Sarah Rearick, Ian Grayford, Adrija Andjelic, Colin McDonald, and Dyland Vogt, all advanced piano students of Mercyhurst University Professor Dr. Shirley Yoo, performed in April. We also showcased 11-year-old Deven Shah in March 2014. Deven has performed a Haydn piano concerto with the Erie Chamber Orchestra, won first place in the Erie Music Teachers Association Competition and second place at the Duquesne National Young Artists Competition in Pittsburgh, took second place at the Chautauqua Sonatina Festival, and received a state-level award in the Dorothy Sutton Piano Festival held at Slippery Rock University. A few weeks after his recital at WQLN, Deven performed a solo show at Heinz Hall in Pittsburgh.

In the Community

November 22, 1963

Even though I was only a small boy, I remember being profoundly moved by the assassination of the president and even have memories of lining up my soldiers . . . and making a caisson drawn by horses, . . . based on images that I saw on television. –Michael D., Erie

WQLN Radio commemorated the 50th anniversary of President Kennedy’s death with JFK Audio Memories, a compilation of listeners’ remembrances of when and where they heard the fateful news:

I will never forget [my professor’s] reaction. He was a Polish immigrant who had fled the Communist regime . . . . And he broke down in tears . . . to find this turn of events in his new country. –Doug P., Erie

After Kennedy, my dad and I argued about everything – the daily news, books, and especially music. But one day our arguing came to a halt and we became much closer, after another shooting – at Kent State on May 4, 1970. –Tom N., Fairview

Get Your Phil at Noon Summer Series

For six summers now, musicians from the Erie Philharmonic have performed three free noontime concerts at the Erie Art Museum, featuring a different section of the orchestra at each performance. They’re called the Get Your Phil at Noon concerts, and 2013’s concerts on June 26, July 24, and August 28 featured strings, woodwind, and brass ensembles of Erie Philharmonic performers. WQLN Radio’s classical music host Wally Faas hosted each summer concert live on the radio. At each concert, our community outreach team provided everyone with a free Smith’s hot dog.

On Film

WQLN Radio is a platform for the arts, including film. The WQLN Radio occasional series On Film interviewed filmmakers whose work has appeared on POV or Independent Lens on WQLN TV. Amy Finkel’s documentary Furever explored the dimensions of grief that people experience over the loss of a pet. Mr. Cao Goes to Washington, by Leo Chiang, is about race, politics, and what it means to be an American in the 21st century. The series also included Shored Up, by director Ben Kalina and The Exquisite Corpse Project, from director Ben Popik.

WQLN Public Broadcasting of Northwest Pennsylvania 2013/2014 Annual Report 8 Perry 200

On September 8, 2013, WQLN Radio and the Erie Philharmonic hosted the Perry 200 finale celebration with a summer pops concert that included live cannon fire during the performance of Tchaikovsky’s 1812 Overture, fireworks, and the lighting of the Eternal Flame atop Perry Monument on Presque Isle.

Music Fest

Back for its 3rd year, WQLN’s Crawford County Music Festival lineup at Sprague Farm & Brew Works in Venango was as solid as any lineup at any outdoor concert around. One-Man Band Tom Stine segued between indie artist Nancy Deckant and Black Rock County, Appalachian music favorites Tiger Maple String, NYC’s The Folkadelics, and Delta Blues masters & headliner The Reverend Peyton’s Big Damn Band, in a muddy, pyrotechnic, foot-stomping set to be long remembered.

Welcome/Best Wishes!

After 18½ years as host of weekday Classics on WQLN Radio, Wally Faas passed the mic to incoming host Brian Hannah – but not before well-deserved congratulations, thanks, and praise from listeners, colleagues, friends, and family at a WQLN Radio open house in his honor, on May 30, 2014.

Brian Hannah, new host of Classics on WQLN Radio celebrated his first broadcast, on June 2, with a well-balanced, expertly curated program that opened with Aaron Copland’s Appalachian Spring and also included Astor Piazzolla’s Libertango, Geshwin’s lovely Piano Concerto in F, Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto no. 2, and Respighi’s The Pines of the Appian Way and promised to carry on the long-established tradition of classics on WQLN Radio . . . with a twist! Brian, a trumpeter and veteran of the Erie Philharmonic, Erie Chamber Orchestra, the Groove, and other classical and pop groups, has infused Classics with a taste of the unexpected, to the delight of listeners.

WQLN Radio also re-introduced Performance Today, the nation’s most popular classical music program, 1-3pm Mondays-Fridays with host Fred Child.

WQLN Public Broadcasting of Northwest Pennsylvania 2013/2014 Annual Report 9 Farewell

Dedication of Tom McLaren Memorial Radio Studios

On September 18, 2013, the Tom McLaren Memorial Radio Studios were dedicated in a broadcast ceremony attended by Mr. McLaren’s family and the radio community and led by WQLN President and CEO Tom New. Since the inception of WQLN Radio in 1973, Mr. McLaren worked as a classical music host, Director of Radio Programming and Production, radio volunteer, and head of WQLN’s History Project. The station was molded on his belief that “public radio listeners don’t just listen – they care.”

Bill Garts

Longtime WQLN Radio host and dear friend and colleague Bill Garts passed away on September 1, 2013. Since 1985 Mr. Garts hosted Saturday Swing Session on WQLN Radio for an abundant and dedicated listener fan base. Those of us who had the privilege of working with Bill remember him fondly:

I was Bill’s engineer on his very first remote, from the Patterson Library in Westfield, New York, two days after the first Gulf War broke out. His program was on Saturday afternoons back then. Bill wondered if we should postpone it, but I pointed out that a guy playing World War II tunes at a display of World War II memorabilia was perfect for day three of a new war. Bill was all nerves at first, but it went great, and we floated home. -Dan Sullivan, WQLN Radio Production Specialist

Bill was one of the sweetest men I’ve ever been acquainted with. He was so easy to work with and did anything we ever asked of him. For many years he drove from Meadville to the station every Saturday night. His wife usually came with him for company while he did his live three-hour show. Many times he would call me just to check in and see how I was doing. He was a real gem!!! –Sue Allen, WQLN Radio Manager

Veteran WQLN Radio host and University of Pittsburgh-Titusville professor Phil Atteberry carries on Bill’s legacy as host of Saturday Swing Session. We’ll think of Bill whenever we hear his closing theme, Benny Goodman’s “Goodbye”.

WQLN Public Broadcasting of Northwest Pennsylvania 2013/2014 Annual Report 10 WQLN Education Changing Lives

Q Kids Readers

Launched in October 2012, WQLN Education’s Q Kids Readers book club continues as a fun way to motivate children to read during the school year. The Q Kids Readers Book Club encourages kids to read books of their choice, including at least one PBS-related book. Children who sign up for the free book club and read a certain number of books are congratulated on WQLN TV by Squiggley, the studious (and cute!) mascot of Q Kids Readers.

Families Turn on to Literacy™

WQLN Education is committed to improving the lives of children in our community by intersecting media and learning, providing teachers and parents the tools to encourage learning in the classroom and home, and strengthening community partnerships that foster early childhood education. Families Turn on to Literacy combines PBS Kids programming, quality books, and hands-on activities, giving parents the resources they need to increase their child’s educational success. This program educates families in four categories of literacy: Traditional, Social & Emotional, Nutritional, and Financial.

• The Traditional Literacy series covers the learning process and foundational reading skills, vocabulary development and comprehension, reading/writing connection, and developing fluency and high order thinking. PBS Kids programs included in the curriculum are Between the Lions, Super Why, and Martha Speaks.

• The topic areas covered in the Social & Emotional Literacy (SEL) series are self-awareness, self-regulation, social skills & relationships, and social awareness: showing empathy and perspective-taking. Included in the SEL curriculum are PBS Kids programs like Clifford the Big Red Dog and Arthur.

• The Nutritional Literacy workshop introduces families to healthy eating habits, the importance of exercise, ways to stay healthy with proper hand-washing and germ control, and suggestions for increased physical activity. Families learn to identify popular advertising techniques used to sell food. Jay Jay the Jet Plane, Arthur, and Berenstain Bears are the PBS Kids programs included in the curriculum.

• Financial Literacy offers a basis for the responsible use of money and credit. Participants learn to make informed financial decisions that can affect their families and their future. In addition, parents learn about media literacy and how it affects their child’s health. PBS Kids programs included in the curriculum are Cyberchase, Arthur, and Berenstain Bears.

Since the inception of Families Turn on to Literacy, WQLN Education has directly impacted the lives of 2,744 individuals from over 60 elementary schools in 17 school districts. While all families benefit from our literacy programs, WQLN Education targets at-risk families, specifically parents and their K-2 students from inner-city schools.

WQLN Education’s objective is to empower families to make changes necessary to improve the education of their children, encouraging active learning in the home. These workshops help to form positive relationships between children, parents, educators, and our community

WQLN Public Broadcasting of Northwest Pennsylvania 2013/2014 Annual Report 11 partners. To encourage participation, families who complete the four-week workshop series are rewarded with great children’s books and a free one-year membership in the WQLN Kids Club along with other benefits.

WQLN Education credits the strong partnerships with our local businesses that share the same passion and vision by supporting innovative programs like Families Turn on to Literacy through the Pennsylvania Educational Improvement Tax Credit program. Because of the generosity of our EITC Partners, we are able to offer the Families program to local school districts as a benefit at no cost and our EITC Partners can receive up to a 90% tax credit.

JUMP! Back to School Expo

WQLN Education’s first annual JUMP! Back to School Expo at Erie’s Bayfront Convention Center was held on Sunday, August 11, 2013, as a way to ignite, inspire, and engage the academic potential of all students, from kindergarteners to seniors in high school, as they prepared for the coming school year. JUMP! was a one-stop experience of the latest products, services, and resources designed to bolster a child’s academic success, including technology to improve the classroom experience, a simulator courtesy of the Northwest Regional Highway Safety Network which taught students about the consequences of distracted driving, and advice on everything from financial planning to addressing bullying in and out of the classroom. The Kids Zone featured Erie Zoo animals and an Erie Art Museum booth with educational crafts for younger kids, and popular PBS Kids host “Mr. Steve” performed an interactive segment.

JUMP! also offered free haircuts, free school supplies, and ample information about healthy self- esteem, nutrition, and exercise. JUMP! attendance exceeded 1,400!

PBS KIDS Writers Contest

The PBS Kids national contest celebrated its 20th year in 2014! The contest is a national-local contest designed to promote the advancement of children’s literacy skills through hands-on active learning. WQLN Education, in partnership with the Northwest Tri-County Intermediate Unit, administrated the local contest, encouraging children in grades K-3 to write and illustrate their very own stories. Twelve winners, three in each grade level, were recognized for their accomplishments at the annual Winners Party. The local first place winning stories were entered in the national contest with a chance to win great prizes.

WQLN Education congratulated Ethan Mattocks, WQLN’s very first NATIONAL WINNER! Ethan took National First Place in his grade category for his creative, thoughtful, and charmingly illustrated “Once Upon a Pencil”, archived at WQLN.org.
