Bimonthly Viewing Guide Michiana’s bi-monthly Guide to WNIT Public Television Pl a nnerIssue No. 6 November – December 2020 BROADWAY’S BEST AMAZING NIGHTS 4 OF BROADWAY STARTS FRI NOV 6 9/8c A Message from Greg Giczi President and GM, WNIT Public Television Board of Directors Chairman Hello my favorite PBS Michiana Viewer! Susan Ohmer, Ph.D. Vice Chairs I am looking forward to this holiday season, starting with Halloween. I have a virus-protective Robert G. Douglass special-theme mask to wear around our office for each holiday. Yes, we’ll all be celebrating a little James Hillman differently because of the COVID-19 virus, but maybe it will make our celebrations with fewer President and people more meaningful. General Manager Inside this edition of your WNIT magazine, we’ve tried to highlight the best of the best, Greg Giczi Planner but there are several hidden gems waiting for you to discover. Here are some that have caught my Treasurer eye… William J. Schmuhl, Jr. Secretary November is the month for political intrigue. On Sunday, November 1st, at 9pm, we start with Hayley G. Boling the new Masterpiece series “Roadkill.” The plotline has politician Peter Laurence pursuing his own Directors agenda while his opponents try to bring about his ruin. Does this sound familiar? Then, that Jim Arnold following Tuesday, we’ll go back to real-life political intrigue and PBS NewsHour’s election night Tania Bengtsson coverage. That will start at 6pm and conclude at 11pm. I suspect there will be drama for the next Marvin Curtis several days. Joel D. Duthie Rebecca Espinoza-Kubacki Over the last few years, PBS Michiana has created a wonderful series of stories about some of Mary Horan our region’s most impactful citizens, Legends of Michiana. We’re going to encore a few of these Katherine Humphreys documentaries starting Thursday, November 5th at 10pm right up to Thursday, December 10th Brian Inniger when we premiere the newest in the series, Legends of Michiana: The Martin Family. This is Paul Jordan the multi-generational story of the community-minded family which built Elkhart’s NIBCO Trevor Kubatzke (Northern Indiana Brass Company) into a national concern without losing their local roots. John Lloyd Christine M. Maziar “Sanditon” returns to Masterpiece starting Sunday, December 13th. A Call the Midwife holiday Mary Louise Miller special will be presented on Christmas Night at 9pm and an American Masters episode featuring Pat Moody the story of “Little House on the Prairie” author, Laura Ingalls Wilder, will premiere on Tuesday, Mike Pound December 29th at 8pm. Rebecca Stoltzfus, Ph.D. James M. Summers WNIT will feature loads of holiday music programs and other holiday specials on all three Kimberley Bow Sundy WNIT channels. Your Planner magazine is your best guide. Michael Wargo Marcus Winchester Thank you for being a WNIT viewer and financial supporter. It costs about $10,000 per day to Linda Yoder operate PBS Michiana. We’re anxious to expand our ability to provide at-home learning services and are building a fund to make these upgrades. This may be a project of interest to you. Give me Charter Directors a call and let me share our vision. Maybe this is a good way to direct funds from your IRA? Arthur J. Decio Jerry Hammes Happy holidays to you! May you be blessed with good health, lots of smiles, and happy times. Ernestine M. • Abortion on TV in 2015
Abortion on TV in 2015 In 2015, we counted 20 times American television shows discussed abortion. For some shows, this was just a quick mention, but for 12 of these cases, it was a central part of an ongoing story. Each of these 12 storylines included a character making (or who had made) a decision about getting an abortion. In 8 cases, the character actually got an abortion—that means 67% of the characters depicted consider abortion had an abortion. (This is on par with our 2014 data, where 11 abortion stories featured 7 characters getting abortions. However, it does represent a noticeable uptick from previous decades, where only 50% of characters considering abortion obtained one.) Three abortions were shown onscreen, including 2 contemporary abortion procedures, which had not previously been shown on television. Additionally, we saw the first portrayal of safe, accurate, and effective use of medication abortion. After an abortion storyline that avoided an actual abortion for Jessa in Season 1 The CW hit Jane the Virgin brought up (“Vagina Panic”), Girls handled abortion abortion in February, when Jane must much differently this time around. If it’s four more years of Donald Trump, then the preppers and survivalists may be on to something. Whatever and whenever the results, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is T right to say that Canada needs to be “ready for all outcomes”. Canada’s relationship with the U.S. is the consequential one. NORAD safeguards our security, although whoever forms the next administration is going to press us to invest in a new North Warning System and to increase our defence spending to the NATO target of two per cent of GDP (we currently spend 1.3 per cent). The new Canada-U.S.-Mexico trade agreement (CUSMA) guarantees access to what is still the biggest market in the world and the preferred entry point for fledgling Canadian exporters. Our shared environment is managed through a web of agreements dating back to the Boundary Waters Treaty and the International Joint Commission (1909).
