3 2015 NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS DIRECTOR MICK BYRNE DIRECTOR OF TRACK & FIELD AND CROSS COUNTRY MICK BYRNE In his second season of leading the combined Wisconsin cross country and program, Mick Byrne has the keys to the one of the nation’s proudest programs. The men’s and women’s cross country teams have captured seven national championships and seven individual national titles, while the men’s and women’s track and field squads have 12 NCAA trophy teams to their credit.

„„ REPLACING A LEGEND: Byrne replaced a legend at Wisconsin in longtime coach Ed Nuttycombe, who won 26 Big Ten titles during his 30 years at UW and was the only coach in Big Ten history to lead a program to an NCAA indoor title. Byrne has done a great job filling Nuttycombe’s shoes, as for the first time since 2007, the Badgers swept both the indoor and outdoor Big Ten titles, thanks in large part to strong performance by the Badgers’ distance crew and field athletes. At the indoor championships, down by 21 points to Nebraska with four events to go, the Badgers used tremendous perfor- mances by Michael Lihrman in the weight throw and Collin Taylor in the high jump, and a 1-2-3 podium sweep in the 5000 meters by Mohammed Ahmed, Reed Connor and Malachy Schrobilgen to topple the Huskers. The outdoor championship was won in a similar fashion, as Ahmed, Connor and Schrobilgen swept the 5000 meters to dis- tance the Badgers from the Cornhuskers and Illinois. Wisconsin scored 49 of its 121 points in the 5000 and 10,000 meters at the Big Ten outdoor meet. „„ DISTANCE DOMINANCE: The Badgers’ distance crew has been dominant, as well, as 10 Wisconsin athletes have been named All-America and combined for 18 honors dur- ing Byrne’s six-year tenure. Wisconsin has won four Big Ten track titles while Byrne has been in Madison, including the 2012 outdoor championship held at McClimon Memorial Track, the 2013 indoor crown and the 2014 indoor and outdoor titles in his first year as director of track and field and cross country. The UW men’s cross coun- try team has won six Big Ten titles during Byrne’s tenure, and the women’s squad placed second at the 2014 Big Ten Cross Country Championships, its best finish since 2008. Both cross country teams placed 10th at the 2014 NCAA Cross Country THE BYRNE FILE Championships, marking the 19th straight year the men have finished in the top-10, „„ 7th Season at Wisconsin while the women earned its first top-10 placing since 2006. . 6 Big Ten cross country championships „„ A YEAR TO REMEMBER: The 2011-12 season was one to remember for Byrne, as the men’s . 2 Big Ten track titles (1 indoor, 1 outdoor) cross country program won its fifth national title. Mohammed Ahmed, Elliot Krause, Ryan Collins and Reed Connor earned All-America honors to give their coach his first . 35-time Coach of the Year (32 cross country, 3 track) national championship. For his efforts, Byrne was named the 2011 U.S. Track & Field . 8-time Big Ten Coach of the Year and Cross Country Coaches Association’s National Coach of the Year along with being . 2011 USTFCCCA Cross Country National Coach of the Year named the Big Ten and Great Lakes Region coach of the year. Ahmed continued his brilliant season on the track as he set the Big Ten record in the 10,000 meters and won the Canadian national title en route to qualifying for the 2012 Olympics, where he BIG TEN MEN’S CHAMPIONSHIPS placed 18th. He followed that performance with a ninth-place showing in the 10,000 „„ Nuttycombe/Byrne Era, 1984-Present meters at the 2013 IAAF World Championships in Moscow. Byrne was Minnesota 0 4 5 9 honored as conference coach of the year an impressive 23 straight seasons, dating back Illinois 1 3 4 8 to 1991. He earned 17 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference honors while at Iona, and Michigan 3 1 1 5 in each of his first six seasons at Wisconsin. He has also been honored with regional Ohio State 0 1 2 3 coach of the year accolades by the USTFCCCA 10 times. Iowa 0 0 1 1 „„ ACADEMIC SUCCESS: In addition to his team’s strong showing in competition, Byrne has Michigan State 0 1 0 1 also proven his ability to develop student-athletes in the classroom. After taking over Iona’s head coaching duties in 1989, he built the Gaels’ men’s cross country program into not only a conference powerhouse, but also a consistent national contender. The Gaels’ tradition of excellence produced an astonishing 17 consecutive MAAC titles and 12 trips to the NCAA championship. Over his final five seasons at Iona (2003-07), few schools experienced success on the level of Byrne’s squad. With four NCAA podium finishes in five seasons, Iona registered the highest finish in school and conference history by placing second in the 2007 NCAA Championship. The Gaels also earned a third-place finish in 2006 as well as fourth- place showings in 2003 and 2005. The runner-up finish in 2007 marked the sixth- straight top-10 finish at NCAAs for Iona and its third-consecutive appearance on the podium. 2015 NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS ROSTER BADGERS COMPETING THIS WEEKEND PRONUNCIATION GUIDE Name Pronunciation ALPHABETICAL Deanna Latham: LAY-tham Name In/Out Events Hometown (High School) Michael Lihrman: LEER-man Kelsey Card Jr./Jr. Throws Plainview, Ill.
