The term “student-athlete” signifi es something extraordinary on the campus of Bucknell University. Being a Bison means that you have the rare blend of physical skills along with the drive and passion need- ed to succeed at the highest level of collegiate athletics. Being a Bison also means that you are a scholar fi rst and foremost. You believe that values associated with Divi- sion I athletics, such as time manage- ment, leadership, teamwork and grace under pressure, are but a part of a well- rounded college experience. At Bucknell, our students, faculty and staff pride themselves as national leaders in upholding the scholar-ath- lete ideal that balances a challenging academic program with the demands of successful Division I athletics. Being a Bison means that you have pledged to be a student-athlete in the purest sense. In doing so, you will

With 13 Patriot League Presidents’ Cups in 17 years, national leadership in graduation rates, 114 Academic All-Americans in 37 years and 110 Patriot League Scholar-Athletes in 18 years, Bucknell is clearly at the head of the class in terms of upholding the scholar-athlete model. The addition of the Kenneth G. Langone Athletics and Recreation Center, one of the fi nest collegiate athletics and recreation venues of its kind, ensures the continuation of that success. The facility enhances each of Bucknell’s 27 varsity programs and greatly expands the scope of its growing intramural and recreational sports offerings. A visually appealing structure located along Moore Avenue on the “downhill” side of campus, the Langone Athletics and Recreation Center was designed to reach out to all members of the campus community, including the student body, varsity student-athletes, faculty, staff and alumni. Three primary venues lie within the facility: the Arthur D. Kinney Jr. Natatorium, the 4,000-seat Gary A. Sojka Pavilion and the Krebs Fam- ily Fitness Center. Other features include a new location for the Bucknell Athletics Hall of Fame, a display of Bucknell’s Congressional Medal of Honor recipients, a sports medicine and athletic training suite, classrooms, modern offi ces for coaches and staff and increased locker room space for varsity and recreational athletes. The facility is named in honor of Ken Langone, a 1957 Bucknell graduate who, along with his wife, Elaine, pledged $11 million toward the center’s construction. Langone was a member of the university Board of Trustees from 1980 to 1996. One of the special qualities of the Langone Athletics and Recreation Center is the manner in which it supplements the pre-existing facili- ties. The brand new construction surrounds Gerhard Fieldhouse and historic Davis Gymnasium, which has been restored as a competition venue for the Bison volleyball and wrestling teams, as well as intramural, recreation and other varsity practice activities. As Bucknell continues to strive toward its mission of setting the standard of excellence in college athletics, the Langone Athletics and Rec- reation Center becomes the centerpiece in an already impressive cache of athletics facilities that includes the 13,100-seat Christy Mathew- son-Memorial Stadium and its FieldTurf and 8-lane track surface; the scenic Bucknell Golf Club; Depew Field, the home of the Bison baseball team; the spacious West Fields for softball, Varsity Soccer Field and Graham Field, including the new Phase III portion of the West Fields Project.

TThehe PatriotPatriot LLeagueeague In its second decade of combining academic and athletic excellence, the Patriot League sponsors 23 sports – 11 for men and 12 for women. Initially started as a NCAA Division I-AA football conference in 1986, the Patriot League became an all-sport conference in 1990 and includes American, Army, Bucknell, Colgate, Holy Cross, Lafayette, Lehigh and Navy as full members, and Fordham and Georgetown as associate mem- bers in football. These institutions are among the oldest and most presti- gious in the nation and their alumni have, and continue to play leadership roles in shaping our country. Since 1998, the Patriot League has ranked fi rst each year among all Division I conferences awarding athletic aid in the NCAA Graduation Success Rate report. In addition, the Patriot League fi nished as one of the nation’s leaders in the NCAA Academic Progress Report (APR) among all Divi- sion I conferences awarding athletic aid. The APR is used to measure academic eligibility, retention and graduation of student-athletes. Patriot League student-athletes and teams continue to enjoy success at the national level, with opening round victories coming in several NCAA Championships, including wins in men’s basketball during the 2005 and 2006 seasons, a championship game appearance in both football and men’s lacrosse, and a sixth-place individual fi nish at the NCAA Cross Country Championship. The Patriot League’s mission is simple, to provide successful competitive athletic experiences while maintaining high academic standards, and to prepare its student-athletes to be leaders in society.
