The History of League510 Background League510 is a Bay Area based hip-hop group formed in 2004 by group members TK(Top Kat), Mont, Mr. Knowitall, and Blacksmith. After years of underground shows and recordings, League510 has been signed to Clear Label Records to produce their debut album To The Beat. League 510 has continually surpassed the boundaries of contemporary hip-hop, giving birth to what has become locally recognized as Town Techno. League510’s journey began at a young age when they formed their first group, The Knuckleheadz. Without any formal guidance the group rehearsed rigorously to give their first performance at the Montera Middle School talent show. The group went as far as coordinating their outfits, choreographing the performance, and gaining crowd participation by passing out bandanas before the show, so the students could wave them in the air on queue. Needless to say their show was a success, and the Knuckleheadz acquired great recognition from their peers. The high school years were when League510 began to find their unique sound and abilities. After a short run with Assassin Records, League510 joined a youth ran record label, BUMP(Bay Unity Music Project) Records in Oakland, CA. Working with BUMP allowed them to hone their musical talents, while also learning the ins and outs of the music industry. This is also where they met other young artists striving for similar goals, which was very empowering. As League510 grew older it came time to leave BUMP Records to find their own path. For this reason they helped form an alliance of artists, most of who started out in BUMP, known as Famillite. The League was featured on multiple compilations with Famillite, and to this day continues to perform with other Famillite artists. Since their middle school days many can attest to have recognized League510’s uncanny style. Their potential has continually accended to new heights and has caught the attention of many across the Bay Area, including Tajai Massey, owner of Clear Label Records and renowned recording artist with the group Souls of Mischief and the crew Hieroglyphics; who followed League510 after hearing music from their time with BUMP Records. This eventually led to League510 signing with Tajai and Clear Label Records to produce their first album, and the rest is history in the making. As this planet’s species developed, it became extremely homogeneous, crime ridden, and devastated by tyranny and corruption. Amongst their population there was a small group that opposed the state of the world. Determined to flee the planet and find new inhabitance far away from their species, four individuals managed to escape, destined to journey through space to find a new home. After traveling the universe for years, they came to our galaxy, to our solar system, and to our planet—Earth. Not knowing how the inhabitants of Earth would react to their arrival, they chose to land in the hills coincidently east of Oakland, CA. After hiding their ship deep in the hills they approached The Town with great curiosity, and immediately were amazed by the vibrant culture of the human race. They observed music, dance, and empowerment—elements they lacked in their past lives. To fit in they chose to take human form and build their new lives the Bay Area, embracing the culture and making it their own. As time passed they noticed signs very similar to what they had observed on their home planet—corruption, greed, and disparity. They knew something had to be done to save Earth from the same devastation they had experienced their whole lives. They knew action had to be taken, but simply warning the human race would not be enough. They needed an undeniable force to uplift and amass the people; they needed Music. Using their advanced abilities the four quickly mastered the art of sound, and with much respect for Oakland—their new home and first encounter—they became recognized as League510 made up of Top Kat, Mont, Mr. Knowitall, and Blacksmith. Thus League510 began their musical journey and gave birth to Town Techno, a form of music that would unite the people in heightened awareness; to show them to take action, to appreciate the fun in life, to believe in themselves, and to Believe in The League. Souls of Mischief: ’93 Still Infinity Tour Hits Pawtucket The Met played host to the Souls of Mischief during their 20-year anniversary tour of their legendary debut album, “’93 til Infinity”. This Oakland-based hip- hop group, comprised of four life-long friends, A-Plus, Tajai, Opio and Phesto, together has created one of the most influential anthems of the ‘90’s hip-hop movement: the title track of the album, ’93 ‘til Infinity. This song is a timeless classic. It has a simple, but beautifully melodic beat that works seamlessly with the song’s message of promoting peace, friendship and of course, chillin’. A perfect message to kick off a summer of music with. The crowd early on in the night was pretty thin and the supporting acts did their best to amp up the audience for the Souls of Mischief. When they took the stage at midnight, the shift in energy was astounding. They walked out on stage and the waning crowd filled the room in seconds. The group was completely unfazed by the relatively small showing and instead, connected with the crowd and how excited they were to be in Pawtucket, RI of all places. Tajai, specifically, reminisced about his youth and his precious G.I. Joes (made by Hasbro) coming from someplace called Pawtucket and how “souped” he was to finally come through. The show was a blissful ride through the group’s history, mixing classic tracks like “Cab Fare” with more recent releases, like “Tour Stories”. The four emcees seamlessly passed around the mic and to the crowd’s enjoyment, dropped a song from their well-known hip-hop super-group, Hieroglyphics, which includes the likes of Casual, Del Tha Funkee Homosapien and more.

Beyoncé, Charlie Wilson & Big Sean),” My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy. This course introduces students to the critical investigation of hip hop around the globe, and begins by recognizing hip hop as a social cultural movement that exerts significant resistance against oppressive societal forces while simultaneously producing material and mental empowerment for marginalized peoples around the world. We will establish this claim by thoroughly examining both the aesthetics and elements of the art form, and its resultant sociocultural movement. Focusing on the roots of hip hop in the inner-cities of the United States during the late twentieth century, and its continued prominence in urban environments across the globe in the twenty-first century, we will highlight the relationships between art, capitalism, politics, and social movements in order to provide students with a working critique of the structural context in which hip hop arose, matured, and continues to evolve.

  • The Rosetta Stone in Historical Perspective
Journal of the Adventist Theological Society, 12/1 (2001): 1Ð21. Article copyright © 2001 by Keith Schoville. The Rosetta Stone in Historical Perspective Keith Schoville University of Wisconsin, Madison The history of modern, scientific archaeology is little more than a century old. Before 1890, western interest in the ancient Near East was basically a hunt for treasures to stock the great national museums of Europe.1 This interest in antiquities began to develop into a disciplined, enlightened effort thanks to the work of Sir William Flinders Petrie. This was particularly true for Syro- Palestinian archaeology. We mark his brief encounter with Tell el-Hesi, not far from Gaza, in 1890, as the stellar point. It was in the publication of that six week long excavation that he presented the principles that permeated his work: dig- ging according to the stratigraphy and dating according to typology.2 The application and refinement of those principles have continued to define modern archaeology to this very day. During and since PetrieÕs time (he died in Jerusalem in 1940), a vast number of excavations throughout the Middle East have recovered a tremendous volume of objects, including those bearing writing from the dim past of the biblical world. But some of the most significant finds were accidental rather than methodically recovered in excavations. A primary example that comes to mind was the discovery of the scrolls recovered from the caves near Khirbet Qumran by Bedouin shepherds in 1947. Today we are re- calling an equally significant discovery made not a half-century but two centu- ries agoÑthe discovery of the Rosetta Stone.
