2014/15 President’s Report

The 2014/5 season had some high moments but, all things considered, must be rated a disappointing one.

The Club functioned well administratively and will likely record another financial profit despite significant expenditure.

The junior section continued its progress with record Milo numbers and the fielding of an under 16 team for the first time in many years. The work done over the past few years has borne fruit with a modified rules under 12 team, two under 12 teams and the under 14’s.

This is a fantastic outcome for Steve McGuiness, Mick Foot, Dave Mullane, Al Glenton, Chris Miester and Matt Thorp in particular but also for the many other players and mums and dads who have worked so hard to establish and support the teams in so many ways.

However, the real success is due to the Club members, some of whom are mentioned above, who had the foresight to recognise that the future of the Club was tied in with the re-establishment of a vibrant junior section. A lot of the hard work has now been done but we all know how quickly it can become undone if we take our collective foot off the pedal

The feeding ground for our juniors is the Milo program administered by Matt Thorp but with many helpers. Friday nights at Arthur Street have become very much a social event with parents of the Milo kids enjoying an end of week wine or two watching the kids learn our great game.

It will be even bigger this coming season with 20/20 Milo Big Blast also happening on Friday nights at Arthur Street. It is a fabulous way to foster junior cricket and Cricket Victoria is to be congratulated for developing and funding this initiative.

The committee, executive, coaches, managers and many other contributors are to be congratulated for their efforts. In particular the contribution of Chris Williams as coach, Milo coordinator, first eleven stalwart and all round good clubman needs to be recognised. He has taken up a full time teaching position in the UK and is lost to us hopefully only temporarily as we would welcome him back any time.

Winnie Lim did a great job as Social Secretary and many a fun night was had at Bentleigh during the year. Our afternoon teas are the envy of all and opposition players were seen to photograph the spread to send to their own clubs!

The major disappointment was the lack of success of the First eleven. We were let down badly by one of our professionals who came well recommended but whose personal problems got in the way of his cricket. His personal contribution was minimal and in fact his shenanigans sapped the morale of the rest of the team and took up an inordinate amount of administrative time. On one view the team did well under difficult circumstances.

A bright spot for us was the development of the younger brigade. We have a group of ten or so mid to late teens who show tremendous promise with more in the pipeline from the junior section. Many of the youngsters played in the seconds and thirds whilst also being active in assisting with the Milo and juniors. This only emphasises the importance of producing our own home -grown cricketers - a major emphasis of the Club now and will be in the future.

The seconds and fourths had their moments of glory but narrowly missed the finals. The thirds won through to the finals but did not go all the way.

One thing that has become obvious to me in the last couple of years is the need for the senior section to become closer to the junior section and the many mums and dads who support their children in their cricket development. There are always at least half a dozen kids watching the seniors at Arthur Street on Saturdays and Sundays. They have a sense of belonging to Bentleigh, feel at home there and no doubt aspire to be senior Bentleigh cricketers. In my contact with the mums and dads it is clear that they too have a sense of belonging. This needs to be cultivated. When you take the numbers into account we have many more junior members than senior members. The parents of the juniors are in my view an untapped resource. If we can find a way to involve the parents more in the broader club it can only be to our advantage. Their contacts could prove invaluable and their support for fundraising efforts could only be positive.

I fully understand the bond between team- mates and the need to be together but if an extra effort can be made to welcome the parents and involve them it can only make the Club stronger. I hope to recommend to the committee and the Social Secretary that they consider appropriate functions for parents to let them know how we operate and to reinforce their status as Bentleigh people.

Sponsorship is the lifeblood of any successful club and I would like to take the time to thank all of our wonderful sponsors. Bentleigh RSL, R&N Building Services, Telstra Shop, 7Apples, Bayside Dog School, Brighton Toyota, EB Cellars Axetion Tree Services, Cushion, Dimattina Coffee, Southern Tiles, JBS Hospitality, Grilld, Paint Spot, Grosvenor Hotel, John Barnes Locksmith and Woodards. Thank-you to these businesses and importantly to the wonderful people connected to them for their ongoing support of our great club.

I would also like to acknowledge Linda Smith and Belinda Griffiths from the Glen Eira Council. We have forged a strong relationship with our council representatives over the last several years and I would like to say publicly thank both them and their team. Bentleigh Cricket Club is proud of the first class facilities we enjoy and we are extremely appreciative of all the support they proved.

There will be some changes at executive level next season. The good news is that the present incumbents will still be involved at the Club in a significant way and, in many ways more important, the new people come from within our ranks, are proven contributors and have volunteered for the roles. I know they will succeed.

Likewise there will be a new coach of the Club and new captain and vice-captain. Again these positions go to people who are demonstrably Bentleigh people. This is further evidence, if needed, of our emphasis on developing home grown talent. Again I have no doubt that they will succeed and could even be the catalyst for a new glory era of the Club.

Well done to all who have contributed to the Bentleigh cause and I look forward to the coming season with great anticipation.

Ronald Laird President Bentleigh Cricket Club.

Director of Cricket Report – 2014/2015

Looking back on the past season, one is very much filled with mixed feelings. Disappointment, anticipation and excitement are some of those feelings that come readily to mind.

We started off the season in great style, winning the first 4 games and an unlucky draw in circumstances that could have resulted in winning on protest, had we chosen to go down that track. All season it was a case of the top order batsmen getting starts and not going on with it, and the bowling overall simply lacked penetration. We are about a 1000 runs off the pace in the batting from the elite teams, and 20 to 30 in the bowling.

Apart from Roshan Livera, Greg Todd and Chris Williams, the batting was disappointing. Not surprisingly the 3 outstanding performances were the 3 centuries scored by these players, with Chris Williams’ 145 not out against St. Bernard’s being one of the best Innings in my time at Bentleigh, possibly the equal of Steve Hamilton’s 152 over 30 years ago.

Our bowling lacked penetration all year, and even when we got early breaks, couldn’t get the job finished and on many occasions teams got away from us. The only game that we started well and completed the job was in the first round against Hampton. Chris Williams and Daniel Clarke were the standouts from a bowling aspect, and the old war horse, Adrian McInnes, chipped away gamely. Adrian isn’t going to rip through batting line ups anymore, but used smarts to pick up a couple of wickets now and then, and kept an end plugged, bowling economically.

Realistically, we probably didn’t have any truly solid performances all year and finished on the ladder where we deserved to, given the performances we produced.

I would like to thank Greg Todd for his efforts over the last two seasons, first as Captain / Coach and then as Captain last season. Greg has signed on for a further two seasons. I can’t leave out Chris Williams our Coach last season who worked extremely hard around the club, whether that be with the Senior coaching or Junior on- on-one work and the very important role with Milo.

There is real improvement in the players we have, also the leadership group we will have next season.

In Dave McNamara, I believe we have someone who will bring out the best in everyone, with encouragement and nurturing. I also look forward to seeing development of skills and application.

Rob Ciccarella is an interesting case. I told Rob four years ago he wasn’t ready for a leadership role. Over the ensuing period I have seen a young man grow and mature into the role. Between myself and David, we will do everything possible to help and support Rob. Many wouldn’t know how involved he is already in wanting to leave no stone unturned to ensure that Bentleigh is not simply competitive but one of the leading and elite teams in the competition.

We have a very highly talented group of young men coming through and they will be given the opportunity to shine. This may well mean more senior players dropping back a grade, but we have to push on with the development of these young players and give them the experience while we still have senior players around to fall back on, and also to help nurture and guide them.

Russell Keyt Director of Cricket Bentleigh Cricket Club

2014/ 2015 Treasures’ Report

As Treasurer of the Bentleigh Cricket Club for season 2014 / 2015, I am pleased to submit the Financial Statements of the Club to the members of the Bentleigh Cricket Club Inc.

I commend the current Executive Committee, General Committee and members for all the hard work this year. It has been a great effort.

I am sure this will help our future with on field success and ensuring our strong junior program.

Sponsorship – A big thanks to our sponsors, but Matt Thorp’s tireless efforts with sponsorship shows its rewards here. Matt has ensured our sponsorship “portfolio” has grown.

Social – A strong year in social and fundraising. A great effort by Winnie Lim and all the members that have attended our social functions and contributed to the organised nights, events and raffles etc.

Going forward I believe the club is in a great position and should keep us in a very strong position for many years to come and maintain our reputation as the most successful (and best run club) in the V.T.C.A.

I would like to thank our sponsors: Telstra Shop, 7Apples, Bayside Dog School, Brighton Toyota, EB Cellars, Bentleigh RSL, R&N Building Services, Axetion Tree Services, Cushion, Dimattina Coffee, Southern Tiles, JBS Hospitality, Grilld, Paint Spot, Grosvenor Hotel, John Barnes Locksmith and Woodards.

I would also like to thank the Executive Committee and General Committee for all their support and hard work.

Lastly, I would like to make a special mention for Matthew Thorp who is stepping down for a well- earned rest after 10+ years of service to BCC. I think most people know that Thorpy has been a major part of the off field (and on) success over the recent years and a major driving force of our resurrection, since we were near merging and on our knees some 10 years ago.

Thank you,

Paul Ciccarella Treasurer Bentleigh Cricket Club

2014/2015 Junior Co-ordinator’s Report

It was another great season for the Bentleigh juniors. We had our U/12’s go from C grade to B grade and make the Grand Final, even with a shortage of players. The U/14’s also made the Finals narrowly going down in the semi-final. Both Michael and Alan were fantastic with their respective sides. We again had a number of junior players playing seniors with Sammy Mouzakis winning the Adrian McInnes award for the best u18 player to play seniors this season. In addition to this, The Premiership sides from last season were invited to walk on the MCG before the Melbourne Stars game against the Hobart Hurricanes. The U/12’s were also lucky enough to be front row of the MCG for the Match. An awesome time was had by all walking around the hallowed turf. The U/16’s coached again by the dependable Dave Mullane had a tough season. Coming from a premiership in U/14B the previous year to play against all the A Grade sides in the U/16’s, was a big ask. The team pushed a lot of the sides in most of the games even though the other sides were older and loads of representative players in their teams. The team would have learnt a lot this season of the standard required at his level and I can see them being very strong in the 2015-16 season. It is s credit to all the players and managers who stayed through the journey this season and hopefully will again see the rewards in the upcoming season. Well done Dave. 3rd premiership this season? The U/12C side was coached by Chris Meister and also had a bit of a rough year. The majority of the boys came up from modified cricket the previous season to play two day cricket this season. Not only this, some of the players were needed to help out the U/12B side who was consistently short of numbers. The boys again did a great job through the year and have learnt a lot and will be better for it next season. Well done Chris Mick Foot had another great year with his team. Consistently short of numbers, due to various reasons, but with a fantastic core group, they were able to make the Grand Final. They had a real chances throughout the game to bring home another premiership but just couldn’t hold on. Such a credit to the boys and coaching staff to make two Grand Finals in a row. Well done Mick. U/14’s had a rocky start to the year with them like the U/16’s being placed in a grade higher than what was appropriate. When the boys were re-graded Alan took the boys to the finals. A lot of improvement was made along with a lot of confidence and camaraderie. It was a fantastic effort to all involved. Well done Alan

The U/12 modified had an interesting start to the seasons. Which a few changes of coaches. Our main coach, Tom Earls, had to go to Queensland for work. Ultimately Ron Laird and his grandson Sam took control with Sonia and Warwick Langworthy, and the boys started winning a lot of matches. There is some great potential with these young players which need nurtured and developed. Well done to all in involved. Well done and thanks Sonia and Warwick. Well done to Tully and Morgan Foot, Luca Di Conza, and Tim Mullane for representing Bentleigh CC in various representative competitions.

On the Social side of things we again had Christmas functions for the juniors at extreme air for the first time. It was a great success and attendance was fantastic. It was a fun time for the players and some of their siblings. We held our third family fun night for all the junior players and parents in February. It was very successful, with around 100 people in attendance who had a lot of fun during all the activities throughout the evening. It is a wonderful thing to see all the parents and players having a great time as part of the Bentleigh Cricket Club. It bodes well for the future. I would like to thank all the people that have helped the juniors throughout the year with administration, team management, social activities and trainings. In no particular order, Mick Foot, Dave Mullane, Chris Meister, Alan Glenton, Warwick and Sonia Langworthy, Helen Kieboom, Aaron Todd, Jason Abraham, Russ Keyt, Chris Williams and all the others that have helped during the season. I would also like to thank the remainder of the executive for the support during the year. A big thanks for to Steve Grogan and Katrina whose help I could not done without. Their contribution to organising the social functions was outstanding. Moving forward to next season will be an exciting proposition. Implementation of a successful T20 blast competition on Friday nights along with the successful milo program will ensure success of our junior club for many years to come. We need to future proof our club to reduce our reliance on international and contracted players. With the right amount of work we will be able to maintain the sides we have and further grow the junior club and turn these junior players into long standing senior players and clubmen. This will be my final report as junior co-ordinator and wish the next person in this all the success. I am proud of my achievements and of the progress we have made, the coaches I have been involved with, the people that have contributed to the junior and the players I have met. However, we cannot stop here. We need to further develop and continue with the work that has been started.

Stephen McGinness Junior Co-ordinator. Bentleigh Cricket Club

1st XI Captains Report – 2014/15 Bentleigh started the year full of promise. A strong list of players that I believed, if we played to our full ability, could have challenged for the Premiership. Our pre-season was encouraging with a lot of time and effort being put in during the winter months getting ready for the season that lay ahead. Our season started in Round 1 with an encouraging 7 win away from home, over the newly promoted Hampton. Round 2 had us at home for the first time in the season, scoring another decisive win against Airport West. Everyone was contributing in the first 2 games, one way or another without too many standout performances. The hope was that these wins would set us up for the rest of the season. Round 3 had Bentleigh winning again, this time over Strathmore. It wasn’t a convincing victory, but a win is a win. So after 3 rounds we were 3 from 3 and we hadn’t really got out of second gear yet which we all thought was really encouraging. Round 4 was the first time we were put under real pressure in an away trip to Greenvale. Chasing 256 this was arguably our best performance chasing this total down easily in the end finishing8/324. Finally our batting was coming together, 4 from 4 In Round 5 we were rained off and had to settle for a draw, but still undefeated. Round 6 was at home to McKinnon and was very disappointing. The game before and after Xmas are crucial to any teams success in the competition so it was a very important game and we emphasized this as it was the same time we struggled last year. Unfortunately we didn't fire a shot really, losing by 60 runs. That being said, at the Christmas break we were still near top of table which left us with high hopes for the rest of the season. Round 7 away to St. Bernard was a one day game. Having to chase 256 in 40 overs was a big ask and being 4/20 early the game looked well over. But a special innings from Chris Williams 146 not out got us home and our season continued to travel well. Round 8, we were away to Yarraville. Restricting them to 174 was a great effort but similar to the last game, we were 4/20 but this time there was no heroics losing by 24 runs. Round 9 was a crushing defeat to our close rivals’ South Caulfield, losing by 300 runs. This left us with some soul searching to do moving forward. Due to the weather, Round 10 turned into a one day game with the pitch conditions not what we needed at this time of the season against the bottom team Tullamarine. We managed to win by 7 wickets but this didn't give us a chance to gain valuable bonus points. Our season was still alive in Round 11, which was the last round and a must win. To get into the finals we would need luck from other games and a big win. We went out with the approach we must win and win well. If it meant losing trying to do so, that was the risk we had to take. In the end we lost the match and missed the finals. From what started as a promising season unfortunately it ended in disappointment. It was clearly a season of two halves, with a fantastic start but fell away badly in the second. We did have some issues through the season in terms of injury and some other issues that were very frustrating for all concerned, but in the end there can be no excuses. A special mention must go to Chris Williams for his contributions during the season, a standout player both with bat and ball. He did this as well as running trainings for the club. It was much appreciated and he did a fantastic job. I would also like to thank the Executive Committee, all the players and everyone else connected with the Club that helped throughout the season. I look forward to continuing to play for the great Club that is Bentleigh and helping Rob and Jeff take the team to the next level.

Greg Todd Captain - 1st XI Bentleigh Cricket Club

2nd XI Captain Report – 2014/15

Taking over from Troy Gill I have really enjoyed captaining the 2s this year. Although a few of us older players aimed to make finals and win a premiership, the clubs main focus was to start developing the younger guys in preparation to play 1st eleven cricket in the upcoming years. I took on this role, as I believe the young guys are very important for the future of BCC and if we played finals it would have been a bonus.

As it turns out, leading into round 9 we were only 1 game out of finals and the younger guys had been the more consistent performers of the side.

Starting the year with a very young side we won the 1st game (Aaron Todd making 80no), but lost the next 2. After the 2nd loss in a row, I thought we could be in for a very long season as both the older and younger players were batting and bowling quite inconsistently. However, what followed were 3 wins in a row.

As the (older) top order stuttered, the young boys stood up. Bowling improved every week with consistent lines/length and as a result we began to take wickets. We also continued to make important runs down the order, this won us the games. As example of this was Sam Mouzakis and Marty Clements helping us win 2 of the games when we were 9 down. They were amazing wins and great to be part of!!

Sam Mouzakis, Marty Clements and Ed Arnfield were the stand outs. All 3 made match winning scores and all 3 were the better and more consistent bowlers. Also, it was great to see Tim Mullane play in the 2s, being only 14 years old.

Unfortunately we found it hard to win games later in the season which saw us finish towards the lower end of the ladder. I thought we were a much better side than where we finished, but as we struggled early on with inconsistent bowling, the top order could not put up consistent scores throughout the season.

A stand out batting innings for the season was Troy Gills 103no, against South Caulfield. It was a great effort and a fantastic innings to watch.

After a slow start, Motty made a few gritty knocks throughout the season that probably kept us from being bowled out for less. Motty made 246 runs at an average of 30.75 and he was, apart from Adam Sutcliffe the only batsmen to score over 200 runs. Robert Mott was awarded the 2014-15 2s batting award.

It was great to see the younger guys bowl well this year. Sachi bowled well before he was elevated to the 1s, with 10 wickets @16, Sam Mouzakis who always bowled with heart and always ready to give his all, finished with 11 wickets @24. Adam Sutcliffe finished with 11 wickets @ 21. But the bowling award for 2014-15 for the 2nd eleven this year with 14 wickets @20 and well deserved was Marty Clements.

I would just like to thank Robert Mott and Troy Gill for all their help and wisdom on the field as it was my 1st year as captain and also thanks to Aaron Todd who helped out a lot on and off the field and to all the boys that played 2nd eleven cricket that made the year enjoyable as a player and captain.

Paul Ciccarella Captain – 2nd XI Bentleigh Cricket Club

3rd XI Captains Report - 2014/2015

Round 1. A beautiful sunny 27 degree day in Melbourne and the season was on its way. The first ball bowled by Melbourne City after having won the toss and electing to do so.

Deep Gupta our opener turned up late so Michael Levy stuck his hand up to open with Luke Jonstone.Being so far away from the action at Fawkner 4 it was hard to see what was going on in the middle. Luke was going along well until he got a good healthy edge to a fumbling grab at slip. Michael and Brett then put on a great partnership both making 50's. After their wickets in quick succession Alok followed only to play across the line and get bowled for 14. Alan and Aron put on another good partnership until in the second last over Alan was and bowled to a great catch and Aron run out backing up. Ed and Marty brought us home to a good score of 195.

After tea we bowled a great first 18 overs. Damian Tomson's return to the club saw him do a great job in the score book scoring and bowling beautifully into the wind very economically picking up a key wicket to boot. Ed bowled a little short at first but worked it out to bowl an absolute treat to pick up three. Brett his dad took an amazing catch at forward square leg around head height. He was also on a hatrick picking up the wickets late in the spell. He was not far away picking up the third wicket a ball later. Michael Levy struggled to find a good length and bowled out seven fair overs. Dylan Velleman bowled well the young offie and will get another run for his efforts. Alok had a trundle and picked up a wicket at gully by our gully specialist Jonno.

We got it done and look forward to our next challenge.

Round 2. We played on a Fawkner 1, with the pitch that had been played on the day before. The Saturday game had pretty much ensured that the deck was broken up all around the batting area. The rubble at the crease was not the usual Fawkner deck and markings were day old. Eastern flow called heads and batted.

They got off to a good start and were 2/86 at drinks. Two run outs and another wicket took us to tea. None of our bowlers getting on top bar Andersen 2/17

Bentleigh got off to the opposite start with an LBW, first for the match sign of decisions to come. The deck got lower and some did not even bounce then others took off, hand grenades for the afternoon. Bentleigh mounted a challenge with some lusty blows from Patel (65) & Ed Arnfield (45) who played good cricket shots, in the end the damage had been done early falling short by 50 runs.

Easter Flow utilized the conditions well to their advantage and ran out deserved winners. The officiating was par and the match vibe intense played in a good spirit.

Round 3. Carnegie won the toss and chose to bat. They started well and after a torrid effort were all out for 132. Fair to say the bowling from Bentleigh was above par and 132 was a good score. Patel (4) van Staden (3).

Bentleigh lost early wickets and slumped to an overnight score of 6/47. The game well in the Carnegie favour Bentleigh resumed and had a 26 over stand 59 run partnership between Foot (40) Van Staden (16). Jones and Andersen did their part to perfection and a well estimated victory was Bentleigh’s.

In the second dig Carnegie made 132 setting Bentleigh 119 runs to win off 22 Overs. Bentleigh made 1/47 with Johnstone (17 no) and Arnfield (15 no).

Good win.

Round 4. Extremely windy day at the Walker Street Oval. From all weather reports we were unlikely to play. The weather held off with some rain in the morning around St Kilda however we never had to use covers all day.

There was a water spot on a good length for the left handed batsman however the only left handed bat was in the Parkville line-up the skipper To MacQuillan. He scored 70, so there you go. Bowling with a severe cross and head wind was tough however we managed to get wickets at consistent intervals and at the tea break evenly balanced @ 4/97. Tea was awesome as it usually is at Parkville C.C. A surge of runs off the off spinner after tea and then a few quick wickets set the tone for the last twenty overs. Some tight overs brought about the skippers demise and Bentleigh were in for 1 over chasing 186 for victory.

Well we started badly losing Parbury early to a jaffer from Dinh caught behind. Johnstone showed real grit and with a reasonable 30 run partnership got us going. After losing Johnstone to a straight one from Rishi we lost Brett Arnfield to an lbw. We were then to see a fine display of batting from Alok Patel and Ed Arnfield. Both gave chance less efforts Ed going to 72 not out and Alok just missing out trying to turn the leggie through midwicket. Andersen was in and out not to panic. With still 39 to get Aron van Staden and Ed got us to within 14 of victory before the skipper tried to cut one square finding an edge. Morgan Foot skied one however Velleman and Arnfield were not out Bentleigh win this one.

Great win. Round 5. We won the toss and batted against the Reds on a great wicket at Bignell. Parbury (8) and Velleman (22) got us off to a reasonable start. Arnfield (11) and Patel (10) went cheaply by their standards. Glenton strode to the crease like a man with a mission and looked uneasy at first applying himself with a tenacious spirit he opened up and blazed a fantastic 42 to give us momentum. Joined by Andersen after the captain’s demise Andersen found a rich vein of form absolutely demolishing the reds attack to post 59. He and Jones (14) added valuable runs until Janz and Andersen took us past 200.Grove (13) showed great touch until Tomson was felled Bentleigh posting 240.

We proceeded to bowl them out twice for 170. (80 & 90). Opening bowlers Andersen and Van Staden snaring three a piece for very few, Jones Velleman and Grove chiming in. Second bowl Parbury taking a brilliant 4 with Jones & Velleman taking 2 wickets each, Andersen 1.

A great outright win to gel the team even more.

Round 6. Having been offered a forfeit in this two day match we negotiated a one day game in the best interests of getting some cricket played in this particular fortnight. The squad of bowlers complimented each other bowling as a unit running through the Valley Boys for 99. Grove (4) led the charge with Jones Van Staden each taking (2) and Parbury contributed with 1.

The run chase was clinical Tim Mullane and Vello getting us off to our customary start before Patel blazing 57 passed the score 3 down.

Round 7. Against Carnegie we bowled first - Jones, van Staden and Foot each taking a couple with Tomson snaring 1. Foot executed a brilliant run out. We set about posting a score with a sniff of an outright on the cards. Foot (1) was dismissed early with Mullane (17) and Patel (53) at the crease inroads were made to cut the deficit quickly Arnfield, Tomson & Parbury were dismissed for single figures only to bring master blaster Andersen to the markings. He smashed 70 with support from van Staden (18 no). Partners ran out and we posted 190.

We set about the rout and just came up short getting them 5/100 with Jones clipping a further 2 poles. Another good win.

Round 8 - wash out.

Round 9. Eastern Flow won the toss and chose to bat on a hard surface. Jones and Tomson bowled a treat Jones snagging the first wicket of the captain. Grove backed up Jones with a miserly spell of note. Andersen was inexpensive and attacking without luck. Van Staden was the most expensive of the bowlers at 3.6 an over also bowled without luck. Raju spun his way to 6 wickets and therefor the pick of the bowlers.

The run chase was setup with a great bowling performance and after Jonstone chose not to play seeing the furniture disturbed realized probably the wrong choice. Coppens was the wall until deciding to throw the bat at a wide one getting caught and bringing to the crease Arnfield to join Patel. Arnfield was trapped LBW and this was Patel & Levy time. They cut the deficit to more than half at drinks and when Patel went on 47 Andersen and Levy got us to within 20 runs of the chase. Andersen perishing to a caught and bowled brought Raju to the crease only to get bowled without scoring. Jones and levy saw it out a victory that will bring confidence in that the opposition have not been bowled out this season and have not been defeated.

Round 10. We hosted the old foe Parkville districts at home and having lost the toss we precede to dismantle the top order with some great bowling from Damian Tomson whose swing bowling on a string saw him bag 4 for 28. The skipper tried his best to keep up with 5 for 9 hence the all-out score of 46.

We then went into bat and although some of the boys got starts we could only muster 139. Needless to say we won the game first innings happy to get the win.

Round 11. National snapping at the heels of 4th place on the ladder saw them turn up with a determined team. However that was not to be enough as the formidable Brett Arnfield showed his class in an unbeaten 73 on the back of an outstanding bowling performance from John Forster 4/19 and M Parbury 3/19.

It was a good team performance and saw to it the National would stay out of contention for finals.

Round 12. Moonee Valley offered no resistance to us this late in the season and we sniffed an outright. Patel 49 Jones 44 and Andersen 44 put on a show backed up by Thomson 3/13 and J Raju with 2/19.

The captain of the opposition had to have a toilet break mid over and as some might be aware the Bignell road toilets play Burt Bacharach tunes while on the job so he never returned until three overs later.

Round 13. The team was pretty much settled buy now and we knew our best eleven Russel Keyt doing a great job of managing the troops throughout the year and having enough qualification options for us to select on merit and performance. Reds were competitive to start with however once Alan Glenton showed his true potential playing some majestic cricket strokes on his way to 83 there was no stopping us. Lucas Jones one of the best cricketers all round I have ever played with showed brilliance in his 59 to steer us to 206.

Reds were never in it and Ed Arnfields 3/28 & Dylan Vellemans 2/46 saw to it that we were minor premiers for season 2014/2015

Semi Final vs Melbourne City First Eleven We were off to a shaky start but Alan Glenton once again showed his class with a tenacious 51 and one of Bentleigh’s all-time greats James Raju belting a quick 49 set up a score to defend of 172.

The opposition had a few qualified ex district players come in to the team as they set themselves for a big end of season finish. Having not made less the 200 in the last three matches they were giving off the vibe that this was a formality we had not scored enough. Cricket is a game of passion and we needed an extra bit of the good stuff for this match. Strangely enough the opposition decided to provide us with this by swearing at our team’s gentleman Alan Glenton. Needless to say the demon had been awaken and we came out firing Jones 2/24 and van Staden 6/24 saw them reduced to rabble all out 86. Strangely enough the catalyst for our demonic destruction was out first ball.

We ended up batting the match to a close with Lucas Jones achieving his maiden ton 106. Morgan Foot justifying his selection with a very important 65 and our youngest team mate Tim Mullane a very good 31. What a match, it had everything and will be one to remember.

Grand Final vs Eastern Flow Coming into this match against Eastern Flow we had played to one day matches against them one a piece pretty even wins. We believed we could win and set about trying to achieve a result that does not often present an opportunity to do so very often.

We bowled well to keep a very good batting side to 208. Jones 2/13 & van Staden 3 /45. We have the ability to do this on a very good batting track and unfortunately our first innings was un characteristic and our top order just did not get going falling short by some 80 runs. We bowled well again to bowl them out for 224 Levy 3/35 Ed Arnfield 2/27 Aron van Staden 2/34. Needing 304 we had to bat out of our skins however with plenty of time and the talent in the batting line up it was achievable.

The wheels came off and we fell very short all out for 81. What a great game of cricket. Playing with a great bunch of guys who respect and care about one another on an awesome early autumn weekend captures the essence of why we play cricket.

A big thanks to the players and committee members that contributed throughout the year. This was a successful year and many great achievements were accomplished. The third eleven trained like they were in match conditions. They prepared for every match happy to face any bowling in the nets knowing that they may have to face that attack on the weekend. The bowlers worked tirelessly and fielding was always a focus. They treated each other with respect and made all feel part of the team and the club. This attributed to the on field success and that is key because now we have a host of players at our club whose attitude towards others is an example of respect and wanting the best for all club members.

Aron Van Staden Captain - 3rd XI Bentleigh Cricket Club

4th XI Captains Report – 2014/15

4th XI had a very enjoyable season that had its share of highlights and showed us some area we can improve in. There were some massive wins and a few close games that should have been won.

The team missed the finals by 1game and a win in the last game would have placed us in the 4. Two of the teams in the 4 including the eventual premier winner were defeated by our team during the year.

I must add that if we had have had our best available team on the field most weeks, finals would have occurred. Unavailability does occur, however to often players did not take the field for one reason or another.

The main issue was consistency. Winning every second week means a taste of success, however to make finals, more is needed. The team comprised some experience and a blend of youth that will go on to bigger and better things at BCC.

It was great to have a few father/son combinations in the team along the way. Morgan Foot, Kaleb Forster, Luke Johnstone to name a few are all players who showed they will be players of the future for the club. Our batting was led by Steve McGinness with 380 odd runs and David McNamara with 280 plus. Mark Walsh and John Forster also had solid seasons.

Most players stood up during the year with Vihare, Sumit, Morgan and others playing well. With the ball David Mc with 27 wkts and Mark with 21 wkts led the way, whilst Jay Peart, Morgan, James Maby and others did well on occasions.

Congratulations to our trophy winner Steve McGinness and Mark Walsh for the batting and bowling awards and the Roger Kellar trophy was won by me.

Special mention to James Maby and Ed Belger, who gave the team so much more than just runs and wickets. These are two great young men. From a club point of view Thanks to Coach Chris Williams for his efforts to ensure all were prepared for the on field days. To the Committee, Ladies, Bar Managers, Ron McLeod, Peter, Captains, Roger and of course Russ. Thanks for all your efforts. Thanks for allowing me to Captain the Team.
