Two weeks after confi rming they had agreed on a 50-50 partnership, Watson and Glenn said Bill Wavish, Tony Holt and Justin Davis-Rice had been appointed directors, joining Mark Flay and Wayne Scurrah. The owners also announced the now-retired Wavish had been appointed the new chairman, taking over from Flay, who has led the board since 2007. Watson and Glenn said they were delighted with the blend of directors as they seek to deliver on their plan to further strengthen the Vodafone Warriors. They said the new board would be developing new strategic initiatives and opportunities as well as ensuring it maximised the benefi ts of working alongside the Commission, now running the game. And here is one for our readers of the newsletter in the South. Southern Districts Rugby League has a new and hard-working committee, with Nicholas Brady, as president, Maringi Morgan as secretary, Ken Coburn the vice president, and Dennis Thompson in the role of coaching development offi cer. Our southern friends are working hard in most Southland high schools developing junior grades, and so far since the committee was formed it has eight under 15 teams playing nine-a-side within the schools, and four under 17 teams that will play before the premiers on Sundays. The SDRL has also put 10 up-and-coming coaches through their level 1 courses, and has also undertaken a referee’s course. Good on them, I say. It’s great to see people putting it in at the grassroots level. The clubrooms are also getting a make-over with new carpet, paint, vinyl, stage and furniture. And in a move to make a Butcher happy, there is also work going in on a barbecue area for fundraising events, complete with sponsors tables. Those sneaky Aussies know a bit about league and eight southern youngsters have had trials for the trials in Christchurch. No wonder so much effort is being put into the Southland Rams rep teams. A fi ve game tournament is planned, three of those games scheduled for Invercargill. Also being planned down that way are player behaviour contracts to get some pride and respect back into the Southland Rams rep teams and the Southland district in general. Codes of conducts are already in place for all players and clubs. And three cheers for Nicholas Brady , Rocky Crown and Shane Pewhairangi, the founders of the Mataura Warriors, the seventh team in the SDRL comp. They already have an under 17 team, and great support and sponsorship within the community. Nathan Abernethy from Regional Ford in Gore is sponsoring gear bags, the Falls Hotel has sponsored new playing kit, and 4 Square, Clutterbucks Capri restaurant, the Fast Fix foodbar, and B and B Sports are all on board too. We are at home on Saturday to the Gold Coast Titans, who lost 30-6 to the Melbourne Storm over the weekend. Kick off at Mt Smart is a t 7.30pm. I expect everyone to keep the faith. Sure we are one win from three, but this time last year we were none from three, and I also well remember the Broncos going eight straight without a win and going on to win the premiership. We will learn to stop giving sides head starts so that we do not have to come from behind all the time, and the season is all about the long haul. And real fans are in for that - the long haul, so go the Mighty Vodafone Warriors. Go the Mighty Vodafone Warriors!
