SSGIM President Letter of Interest Winter Williams, MD University of - Birmingham

“The people, the people, the people!” So goes my answer for most of the questions that I get about my involvement in the Southern Society for General Internal Medicine: why do you go to that regional meeting year after year? What is so special about the Southern Region? Why do you want to serve as President? Of course, the opportunity for scholarship and an excuse to visit New Orleans may factor in as well, but the sense of camaraderie and community is what I find the most rewarding about my involvement in SSGIM. Each year, I am most excited about the opportunity to interact with friends and colleagues, and that excitement is what I hope to contribute as the Southern Region’s President if selected. My interest in this position comes about from attending the regional meeting since I was a resident and working on the planning committee since 2015. The incredible sense of family amongst core institutions and faculty brings me back each year and continues to motivate me to give back through service to the region. I view this position as an opportunity to do just that by working to broaden and strengthen our region and community. Growing our ranks and impact should be a core focus of the President, which begins with getting members to the annual meeting and allowing them to experience what SSGIM has to offer. This means striking the balance of maintaining the great history and traditions of the region while being nimble enough to innovate in ways that add value to our members, new and old alike. If elected President, I hope to strengthen the communication with and support from the national organization. As membership chair, I have advocated for better communication of best practices across regions and increased support for networking outside of regional and national meetings. I also hope to build on successful efforts already in place like leadership awards which have helped to recruit interested, engaged junior faculty and build our membership and leadership pipelines. I look forward to the opportunity, if selected, to advocate for Southern SGIM and to serve its members as President. I fundamentally believe our people and sense of camaraderie are what make our region so strong and are why it should serve as the model nationally. Curriculum Development:

1. Preparation for Residency (2017 – present). Preparation for Residency is a UASOM course for graduating fourth year medical students. Each year, students participate in a 2-week course with interactive didactic content, immersive and procedural simulation, and BLS/ACLS certification. I assumed the Co-Director role in 2017 when it was an elective and have now overseen the transition to a mandatory course for nearly 200 students over a 4 week time period. The curriculum has been adapted to address procedural and non-procedural specialties.

2. Quality Improvement and Patient Safety Curriculum. Since joining faculty, I have developed a QIPS curriculum for the Tinsley Harrison Internal Medicine Residency program. With Starr Steinhilber, I have created quarterly Morbidity, Mortality, and Improvement noon conferences, facilitated monthly patient safety morning reports, and created a project-based longitudinal project curriculum for upper level residents. I also teach PSQI to all incoming interns during Inpatient Block. Upper level residents present their project findings and outcomes annually in noon conference.

3. Internal Medicine Clerkship. As co-director of the clerkship, I have massively overhauled the clerkship curriculum to include more skills-focused and interactive content. I have created and run monthly physical exam rounds, new procedural simulations, as well as clinical reasoning lectures with case application. During this time, I have also added new subspecialty exposure and markedly cut overall didactic time.
