ABSTRACT This study examines the perceived credibility of professional photojournalism in context to the usage of User-Generated Content (UGC) when compared across digital news and social media platforms, by individual news consumers in the United States employing a Q methodology experiment. The literature review studies source credibility as the theoretical framework through which to begin; however, using an inductive design, the data may indicate additional patterns and themes. Credibility as a news concept has been studied in terms of print media, broadcast and cable television, social media, and inline news, both individually and between genres. Very few studies involve audience perceptions of credibility, and even fewer are concerned with visual images. Using online Q methodology software, this experiment was given to 100 random participants who sorted a total of 40 images labeled with photographer and platform information. The data revealed that audiences do discern the source of the image, in both the platform and the photographer, but also take into consideration the category of news image in their perception of the credibility of an image. -

The Protection of Journalistic Sources, a Cornerstone of the Freedom of the Press
Thematic factsheet1 Last update: June 2018 THE PROTECTION OF JOURNALISTIC SOURCES, A CORNERSTONE OF THE FREEDOM OF THE PRESS According to the case-law of the European Court of Human Rights, the right of journalists not to disclose their sources is not a mere privilege to be granted or taken away depending on the lawfulness or unlawfulness of their sources, but is part and parcel of the right to information, to be treated with the utmost caution. Without an effective protection, sources may be deterred from assisting the press in informing the public on matters of public interest. As a result, the vital “public watchdog” role of the press may be undermined. Any interference with the right to protection of journalistic sources (searches at journalists’ workplace or home, seizure of journalistic material, disclosure orders etc) that could lead to their identification must be backed up by effective legal procedural safeguards commensurate with the importance of the principle at stake. First and foremost among these safeguards is the guarantee of a review by an independent and impartial body to prevent unnecessary access to information capable of disclosing the sources’ identity. Such a review is preventive in nature. The review body has to be in a position to weigh up the potential risks and respective interests prior to any disclosure. Its decision should be governed by clear criteria, including as to whether less intrusive measures would suffice. The disclosure orders placed on journalists have a detrimental impact not only on their sources, whose identity may be revealed, but also on the newspaper against which the order is directed, whose reputation may be negatively affected in the eyes of future potential sources by the disclosure, and on the members of the public, who have an interest in receiving information imparted through anonymous sources and who are also potential sources themselves. -

The etymology of an urban legend [word count: 6302] Dr Martin Hirst, School of Journalism & Communication, University of Queensland [email protected] Abstract: The delightfully enigmatic and poetic ‘gonzo’ has come a long way from its humble origins as a throw-away line in the introduction to an off-beat story about the classic American road trip of discovery. Fear and loathing in Las Vegas is definitely a classic of post-war literature and this small word has taken on a life of its own. A Google search on the Internet located over 597000 references to gonzo. Some had obvious links to Hunter S. Thompson’s particular brand of journalism, some were clearly derivative and others appear to bear no immediate connection. What, for example, is gonzo theology? Despite the widespread common usage of gonzo, there is no clear and definitive explanation of its linguistic origins. Dictionaries differ, though they do tend to favour Spanish or Italian roots without much evidence or explanation. On the other hand, biographical sources dealing with Thompson and new journalism also offer different and contradictory etymologies. This paper assesses the evidence for the various theories offered in the literature and comes close to forming a conclusion of its own. The paper then reviews the international spread of gonzo in a variety of areas of journalism, business, marketing and general weirdness by reviewing over 200 sites on the Internet and many other sources. Each of these manifestations is assessed against several gonzo criteria. -

Feature Journalism Oxford Research Encyclopedia of Communication Feature Journalism Steen Steensen Subject: Journalism Studies Online Publication Date: Aug 2018 DOI: 10.1093/acrefore/9780190228613.013.810 Summary and Keywords Feature journalism has developed from being a marginal and subordinate supplement to (hard) news in newspapers to becoming a significant part of journalism on all platforms. It emerged as a key force driving the popularization and tabloidization of the press. Feature journalism can be defined as a family of genres that share a common exigence, understood as a publicly recognized need to be entertained and connected with other people on a mainly emotional level by accounts of personal experiences that are related to contemporary events of perceived public interest. This exigence is articulated through three characteristics that have dominated feature journalism from the very beginning: It is intimate, in the sense that it portrays people and milieus in close detail and that it allows the journalist to be subjective and therefore intimate with his or her audience; it is literary in the sense that it is closely connected with the art of writing, narrativity, storytelling, and worlds of fiction; and it is adventurous, in the sense that it takes the audiences on journeys to meet people and places that are interesting. Traditional and well-established genres of feature journalism include the human-interest story, feature reportage, and the profile, which all promote subjectivity and emotions as key ingredients in feature journalism in contrast to the norm of objectivity found in professional news journalism. Feature journalism therefore establishes a conflict of norms that has existed throughout the history of journalism. -

Erlebnis and Erkenntnis and Art Criticism Erlebnis, here refers to as knowledge by acquaintance, is knowledge attained in the presence of an object or event, for our purposes here a work of art. Erlebnis is not a vague or content less gesture toward the inefable. Rather, Erlebnis con- sists of an ordered, intelligible, symbolic process through which the producer artist sends out as information consisting of feeling, form, or ideas that com- prise the work of art, which is then received by an observer such as the art crit- ic. Erkenntnis is knowledge about something and consists of a description and interpretation of an object or event. It is based on internalizing perceptual ob- servation and reasoning processes such as analysis, association, comparison, appeal to prior knowledge, as well as judgment which may include assessment. In the case of art, however, a critic’s description, interpretation, or evaluation based solely on Erkenntnis seldom, if ever amounts to an exhaustive charac- terization of the work. It is necessary to supplement Erkenntnis with Erlebnis which is supplied by seeing, hearing, or undergoing, in the actual presence of the visual or performative artwork. Hence both Erkenntnis and Erlebnis have a major place in the creation of art criticism. My intent is not, therefore, to propose that Erkenntnis and Erlebnis constitute a dualism of knowledge with respect to art criticism. There are in fact elements 161 of both at work in the responses to a work of art whether a painting, a musical composition, theater performance or a dance. -

Days before Minnesota's statewide elections in 1982, a prominent Minneapolis Republican told Sturdevant he would give her damaging information about a statewide candidate if Sturdevant would promise not to reveal her source.' Sturdevant pledged confidentiality and, in return, received a manila envelope containing a reporter's bo- nanza: copies of secret court records showing that the democratic candi- date for lieutenant governor had been convicted of shoplifting twelve years earlier.2 When Sturdevant submitted the story to the newspaper, 3 however, her editors refused to honor her promise of confidentiality. -

A second group of ethics experts might be called the “Peripateti.” Like their Greek namesakes, they get around. They advise media organizations on ethical issues, and often organize workshops for newspapers and TV stations. This group is typified by Michael Josephson and his California-based ethics institute.
