The walk today is a circular walk starting from the Roddlesworth Information Centre. This very pleasant walk visits the deep wooded valley of Roddlesworth and then climbs to the airy heights of Darwen Moors and Darwen Tower. It takes in the ruins of an old manor house and, if you have a good head for heights and appreciate a stunning view of Lancashire, there is the 86 ft Darwen Tower to climb. We start by heading away from Darwen Tower and enter the woodlands of the T ockholes Plantation. Within the woods we will be able to wander around the ruins of the Manor House, once owned by the Hollinshead family. We now walk uphill to the track that takes us along the flank of Cartridge Hill. Towards the top of the hill we are a ble (weather permitting) to view a panorama of the Lake District mountains and North Wales. We leave this track and head north on a trail that takes us to Darwen Tower.

We rejoin the Dove and walk along its banks through Wolfscote Dale. We should have fine views across the Der- byshire Dales on the higher sections of the walk and enjoy some beautiful sections of walking along the steep sided banks of the dales themselves. Start point: Car park in Hartington on B5054 - if you are coming in on the B5054 from the A515, go through the village. The nearest post code I can find is for the Post Office which is nearby in the Market Place - SK17 0AL. Level: Easy but with some steep sections of descent to the river Distance: 8 miles Leader: Kate Sunday 11th Oct 2009: Forest of Bowland: Clougha Pike and Wards Stone Description: Trail magazine rates Clougha pike as one of the 100 best hills in the UK. On a good day it has clear views across Morecambe bay to the Lake District. After that we head on to Wards Stone, the highest point in the Forest of Bowland. Please note that dogs are not allowed on this walk. EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Darwen Tower is a Grade 2 listed octagonal Jubilee Tower which was built in 1898 by public subscription to celebrate Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee. The Tower is located high upon Darwen Moors and is exposed to the elements, it is in very poor condition and needs to be repaired and restored. The Board of the Darwen Town Deal invited the Council to submit an application for funding to repair the Tower. After considering the application, the Board subsequently awarded a maximum of £225,000 towards the cost of repairing the Tower. This funding coupled with the £70,000 raised through local fund raising efforts led by Darwen Rotary and a £10,000 contribution from Blackburn with Darwen Borough Council provides sufficient funding to complete the necessary repairs to Darwen Jubilee Tower. A procurement process is underway to select a main building contractor to repair the Tower. Five specialist historic building contractors, all of which have experience of restoring Grade 2 listed buildings, have been invited to submit a tender for the works required. The contract will be awarded in March 2021 with the successful contractor starting works on site in April 2021. There is requirement to use Lime Mortar to repoint walls of the Tower to ensure they are weatherproof and watertight.
