Lichens are important components of forest biodiversity and help to maintain ecosystem functioning. The epiphytic cya- nolichen Lobarina scrobiculata is red-listed in Europe and North America, but knowledge of its ecology and distribution in Southern Europe is scarce. • Methods: We used a multispatial scale design to investigate the effects of macroclimate, forest structure, tree features, and microhabitat on the occurrence, abundance, spatial distribution, and performance of Lobarina scrobiculata in the Iberian Pen- insula at plot and tree scales. Generalized linear models and mixed models were used for analysis. • Key results: We recorded ca 14 000 individuals of the threatened species Lobarina scrobiculata from 22 populations in the Iberian Peninsula. Our results suggest that L. scrobiculata thrives mainly in oak forests with highly variable annual precipita- tion levels. At the plot scale, the L. scrobiculata abundance increased with annual precipitation and tree density (habitat quan- tity). At the tree scale, our models highlighted the importance of tree size and bark roughness (habitat quality) as the main drivers of species occurrence and abundance. We detected a marked spatial pattern on tree trunks, i.e., L. scrobiculata occurred preferentially on north-facing surfaces and close to the ground where humidity is higher. • Conclusions: By integrating multiscale modeling, we analyzed a unique large dataset and these results are essential for under- standing the ecology of this threatened cyanolichen. There is an urgent need to preserve the forests that this species currently inhabits as well as potential colonization sites. Prescribed fire is a common tool in the maintenance of natural landscapes and of high diversity within some plant communities, but its role in lichen communities is little studied. A prescribed fire at Archbold Biological Station on the southern end of the Lake Wales Ridge impacted three separate populations of C. perforata in July 1993, leaving only rem- nant unburned patches scattered among completely burned areas. This study was undertaken to investigate the rate and mode of post-fire recovery of C. perforata in comparison with co-occurring lichens.Detailed GPS maps of individual patches of this lichen were made in January 1997 and com- pared with those made in August 1999. In addition, abundance of all lichen species was monitored yearly during the winters of 1997–1999. Although all of the other terrestrial species in the same habitat recovered from juvenile stages, no juvenile forms of C. perforata were recorded. The area occupied by C. perforata increased by more than 200% , on average, over the three sites. However, population growth (for all species) has so far been too slow to be documented and has not changed markedly over this period.Therefore, dispersal of unburned C.

Sokkal nagyobb veszélyt jelent számukra a speciális élőhelyek megszűnése vagy a levegőszennyeződés megnövekedése. Mivel a zuzmók gazdasági jelentősége csekély, a konzervációbiológiai, ill. ter- mészetvédelmi kutatások elhanyagolt területeknek számítanak a lichenológiában. Nemzeti zuzmó vörös listák azonban mára csaknem minden európai országban ren- delkezésre állnak. A zuzmók konzervációjának kérdéseivel nemzetközi szinten az IAL International Committee for Conservation of Lichens (ICCL), illetve az IUCN Species Survival Commission (SSC) foglalkozik. Hosszú évek alatt tett komoly erőfeszítéseik eredményeként 2003-ban mindössze két faj (Cladonia perforata, Erioderma pedicellatum) került fel az ún. Globális Vörös Listára. Lendemer3 Abstract Background: Prescribed fire is increasingly used to accomplish management goals in fire-adapted systems, yet our understanding of effects on non-target organisms remains underdeveloped. Terricolous lichens in the genus Cladonia P. Browne, particularly cushion-forming reindeer lichens belonging to Cladonia subgenus Cladina Nyl., fit into this category, being characteristic of fire-adapted ecosystems, yet highly vulnerable to damage or consumption during burns. Moreover, inherently slow dispersal and growth rates raise questions about how to conserve these taxa in the context of fire-mediated restoration management. This research was undertaken to identify factors that contribute to Cladonia persistence within areas subject to repeated burning and involved tracking the fate of 228 spatially isolated individuals distributed across seven sites previously burned zero to two times. Site selection was determined by edaphic factors associated with a rare inland dune woodland community type known to support relatively high densities of Cladonia. Results: Evaluated across all sites, the post-burn condition of Cladonia subtenuis (Abbayes) Mattick samples, categorized as intact (32%), fragmented (33%), or consumed (36%) individuals, approximated a uniform distribution. However, their status was highly variable at the different sites, where from 0 to 70% were assessed as intact and 11 to 60% consumed. Machine-learning statistical techniques were used to identify the factors most strongly associated with fire damage, drawing from variables describing the proximate fuel bed, growth substrate, and fire weather.

    Adding North American mushrooms to the IUCN Global Red List We all are aware of the importance of fimgi for ecosystem health and the biosphere in general, but they are rarely included in conservation dis- cussions or actions. In the USA, only two fungi (Cladonia perforata and Gymnoderma lineare) are listed as 'Endangered' under the US Endan- gered Species Act, but the Act does not explicitly provide protections to fungi (Davoodian 2015). Numerous fungal species receive protection under the Survey and Manage Standards and Guidelines of the Northwest Forest Plan (SMNFP), but pro- tection into the future is uncertain. A critical way to help politicians and citizens be more aware of the importance of fungi, and the fact that they face the same threats as plants and animals, is to have mushroom species included in the official IUCN (International Union for Con- servation of Nature) Global Red List.
