Or it won’t. EMP REBIRTH Let me start this with a bolt of lightning one fine Sunday evening towards the end of December. Picture it: Gauteng 2012. It had been hot and stuffy the whole day; my car’s temperature gauge reported 28° at eight in the morning. So nasty in fact it put serious strain on the air conditioners the whole day. As with all hot summer afternoons on the Highveld, the day wrapped up with a thunder storm, some relief from the heat and a fresh start for the next day. But no, not this time; this storm brought a grand total of 18 drops of rain and a vicious crack of lightning that blew the Internet plus a TV, the Xbox and the HDMI port of the DSTV decoder. It wasn’t even a direct hit. So there I was stranded without an Internet connection and no way of fixing it – this lasted a week because in December people who fix things are never around. I felt disconnected from the world and had no idea what I was going to do with my last few days of the holiday. Without games to play what was I going to do? After a few hours exhausting my idea cache of outlandish schemes to get Internet from somewhere I choose instead to try something different. Something I only did at night – read a book. In the day! Other things I did included a bit of recreational writing, installing pipes to protect a cable outside, sorted out my because of some silly social convention or because you were cupboard and so on. People with physical disabilities use various alternate control methods. One less used control method is gaze control. Entertainment is an important part of computing also for users with disabilities. Games are an essential part of digital entertainment, but they are rarely designed to be played with alternate control methods. We investigated the characteristics of game genres to assess the suitability of gaze control of the genres. We thoroughly analyzed interactions in racing games, and designed and implemented gaze controls for Super Tux Kart racing. Users with disabilities may find gaze control fatiguing. To get verification that our implementation can be used by the intended target group, we tested the implementation not only with able-bodied participants, but also with participants with muscular dystrophy. The participants performed a task of driving around a track using gaze control. We measured their performance and asked their opinions about the control method and how fatiguing they found it. We found the implemented versions of gaze control to be intuitive and easy to learn. The participants were able to play the game successfully. The results suggest that people with disabilities benefit of automating selected controls. Automating seems to equalize the difference between able-bodied players and players with disabilities.

    There are only a few works that aim for a comprehensive mapping of what games as a culture are, and how their complex social and cultural realities should be stud- ied, as a whole. Daniel Muriel and Garry Crawford have done so, analyzing both games, players, associated practices, and the broad range of socio-cultural develop- ments that contribute to the ongoing ludification of society. Ambitious, lucid, and well-informed, this book is an excellent guide to the field, and will no doubt inspire future work. Indeed, that7s part of why all right-thinking people 9 Brits, Italians and Poles especially 9 love WF.P. To paraphrase a better man than I: we took an American invention, soaked it in a witches7 brew of Bosch, 0urer and 0or;, Mervyn Peake and Tom Sharpe, Blackadder , The Young Ones , pints of bitter, cheap weed, Iron Maiden and The Damned , and then we played the hell out of it.
