3 ALBRIGHTATHLETICS.COM Kelchner Field

Named after Charles (Pop) Kelchner, the first baseball coach in Albright Col- lege history, Kelchner Field has been the home for the Lions since 1947, and is located in the heart of the Albright College campus. This historic field features two bull pens for each team, as well as two enclosed dugouts. Prior to the start of the 2010 season, Kelchner received a major improvement as a brand new outfield fence and windscreen were installed, enhancing the overall look and layout of the ball park. Kelchner coached the Lions from 1897-1918, and has been called the father of Albright Athletics for his role in helping build some the Lions most historic programs.

On game day, fans truly have the best seats in the house as they are able to sit on either baseline and right behind the backstop. Parents, alumni, and members of the local community have the ability to watch their Lions in a comfortable, safe, and fan friendly environment. ALBRIGHTATHLETICS.COM 4 Casey Lawrence ‘10 Inks Pro Contract READING, Pa. - (Tuesday, June 15, 2010) It’s been a long week to say the least for recent graduate and standout Casey Lawrence. However, all the waiting was worth it as the McSherrystown native signed his first professional contract with the early Tuesday morning. With that signing Lawrence became the first player under 12 year head coach Jeff Feiler to ink a professional contract at any level.

“It was exciting,” Lawrence said. “I was waiting around during the draft and was a little disappointed when I didn’t hear anything. I just kept my hopes up and my faith in God that he’d lead me in the right direction and got a phone call today and it made it all worth it,” said Lawrence who was quoted in the Tuesday edition of the Evening Sun in Hanover, Pa.

The righty pitcher, who was clocked at throwing over 90 mph’s this season, will now head to Clearwater, Florida to begin a six-day minicamp. According to Lawrence, he is expected to be assigned to the short season class “A” New York-Penn League in Auburn, N.Y., or the Rookie Gulf Coast League in Dunedin, Florida. The New York-Penn League will begin it's 2010 schedule this Friday, while the Gulf Coast League is scheduled to begin their 2010 schedule on Monday.

“I think it is a great opportunity for him. Everyone was a little disappointed that he wasn’t drafted last week, but we talked the next day about the fact that this could still happen, that he could get signed as a free agent. I’m just really happy for him that now he has the chance to chase a dream.” said Feiler, who along with assistant coach Gary Yeager, Jr. guided Lawrence through- out his collegiate career.

Professional scout Bobby Gandolfo called Lawrence early Monday morning to offer him the contract. The first time Gandolfo saw Lawrence in action was in April, when Lawrence led Albright to a 7-1 victory. In that contest, Lawrence fanned eight batters, while only walking one in seven of work.

“I think he has ‘pitchability.’ He’s got a good feel for his secondary stuff and his fastball. That’s enough,” Gandolfo told the Evening Sun’s Travis Johnson. “I think he’s got pitches he can locate, especially in the zone. He’s going to be able to get some hitters out. The player development, that side’s going to handle the mechanical stuff, but overall, I think he’s pretty clean. He’s got pretty clean mechanics and, in the end, once you get to that next level, it’s production that takes you as far as you can go.”

As a four-year starter for the Lions bullpen, Lawrence had a sensational career in Reading. The all-time career leader with 251 K’s, Lawrence led Albright to the Commonwealth Conference tournament in 2009 and 2008. In that same season, the righty led the nation in total walks allowed in a nine game with a mere five in 76 2/3 .

In his senior season, Lawrence closed out the year with only 10 walks allowed which ranked him in the top-20 in Division III. Through 64 1/3 innings, Lawrence retired 70 batters, while only giving up 26 earned runs. His 3.64 ERA led the Lions’ bullpen, and his five complete games marked a career high.

Leading up to his contract signing with the Blue Jays, Lawrence like so many other college and high school players listened closely to last week’s MLB First- Year Players Draft. Expecting to go in the later rounds of the draft, Lawrence waited patiently for his name to be called, which it never was.

Not knowing what was next for the righty, Lawrence returned home from his vacation in Florida, but before he could unpack his bags, Lawrence received one the most important phone calls of his young career. Lawrence Named to NY-Penn League All-Star Game

Lawrence Shines In His First Pro Start In August Lawrence was one of four members of the Auburn Doubledays roster to earn a place in the 2010 New York-Penn League All-Star Game which will In his first professional start righty Casey Lawrence led the Auburn Doubledays to a 6-1 victory be played on August 17th at Richmond County Ballpark on State Island, N.Y. over the Williamsport Crosscutters Monday evening in front 1,075 fans at Historic Bowman Field. Since signing with the Doubledays back in June, Lawrence has been lights-out Lawrence, who had thrown a combined five innings in two games since joining the Doubledays for the minor league affiliate of the Toronto Blue Jays. Currently ranked fourth earlier this month, entered the contest with a 0.00 ERA. Up to yesterday’s start the righty had in the league with a 1.59 ERA, Lawrence also leads the Doubledays bullpen in only one hit, two walks, and struck out a total of three batters wins (5), innings pitched (52.1), and walks and hits per inning pitched (0.90).

In his first win of his very young professional career, Lawrence went six complete innings. The The McSherrystown native, who was a four-year member of the Albright base ball team, ranks second in with 41. On the year he has started nine McSherrystown native gave up just one on one hit, and fanned a total of seven batters, and - did not surrender a walk. His 0.82 ERA ranks him third in the Doubleday’s bullpen, while is 11 of the 11 games he has appeared in, and has only been handed one loss. innings pitched leads the team.

Season Preview The 2011 Albright baseball team will take the diamond at Kelchner Field with an experienced senior class that is looking to turn the corner and return to Com- monwealth Conference postseason play once again after a one year absence.

After back-to-back postseason berths in the 2008 and 2009 seasons, coach Jeff Feiler’s squad took a step back and fell short of a playoff berth last spring. Feiler, entering his 13th season as head coach, still has much to be optimistic about for this year’s team. Much of his optimism starts with his offense, which will be loaded with returnees in almost every position around the diamond. The Albright bats must pick up in 2011 to give a young pitching staff time to grow and mature.

While the Lions will have depth in their lineup, the pitching staff was hit hard with the graduation of ace pitcher Casey Lawrence. Lawrence, who graduated last spring as Albright’s career strikeout leader, left a big void both on the mound and in the field. He was a three-time all-conference honoree who became the first player under Feiler to sign with a affiliate. #20 Pat Brady The main strength for the Red & White should be this season’s infield, which will be spurred by seniors Justin Danser and Patrick Brady along with junior Tommy Canuso. Danser is a top-notch shortstop that provides a reli- able glove in the middle of the field. He will also be a consistent threat in the middle of the lineup. Last season, the Ewing, N.J. native hit .299 and was the only player to start all 36 games for the red and white. Brady, who will see innings primarily as a middle infielder, will be called upon to set the table at the top of the lineup for Albright’s power hitters. Canuso is a slick-fielding first basemen that had a .990 fielding percentage last spring. He will also be one of Albright’s top left-handed hitters. Last year, Canuso had a breakout sophomore campaign for the Lions as he hit .350 and drove in 18 runs.

Coach Feiler will also look for production from senior infielder Shawn Walbert. Walbert, a career .307 hitter, will primarily see time at third base. Also helping out will in the infield will be Frank Nastasi, who returns to the line- up after being sidelined with an injury in 2010.

The top vocal leader for Albright will be the man behind the plate, senior captain Jojo Fischer. Fischer hit .258 last year in 30 games played. He also knocked in 18 runs and will look to expand on that output in his final season with the red and white. Junior Doug Mace is another reliable catcher that has the experience to step up when called upon by the coaching staff.

Senior Kyle McGee and junior Jon Raymond will spearhead a deep and talented outfield. Mc- Gee hit a team-best .351 last season in limited action while Raymond knocked in 16 runs. Both #21 Jojo Fischer upperclassmen will be called upon to be major producers this spring. Seniors Rob Mancinelli, Michael Grantham, and Matt Pannella will all contribute in the outfield as well. Pannella, who is making the transition from infielder to outfielder, will continue to be one of the top threats for the Lions on the base paths.

The Lions’ pitching staff will be led by righthander Matt Rehrig and lefty Tyler Storms. The two juniors will look to make the jump to an all-conference type level during their third season on the mound for the red and white. Both have seen major innings in their first two seasons, and Storms will look to bounce back after an injury-plagued sophomore campaign.

Also contributing to the Lions’ pitching staff this season will be senior Kevin Thomas as well as sophomores Tyler Meckley and Kevin O’Neill. All three pitched quality innings in the 2010 season and will be called on even more as experienced members of the pitching staff. While Thomas and Meckley will lead the Lions’ bullpen, O’Neill should see starts on the hill both in and out of conference play.

The 2011 version of the Red & White will look to vie for a Commonwealth conference playoff berth against the likes of Widener, Elizabethtown, and cross-town rival Alvernia. The ten seniors comprising this year’s team are an experienced bunch that has tasted postseason play. They will look to lead a squad that has a good mix of returning contribu- tors and some talented and promising underclassmen.

The Lions’ roster from top-to-bottom will certainly be a motivated bunch as they look to send a large and experienced senior class out on top.
