    Chapter 2: General Description of the Study Area 2.2.2 Geological Description In this Chapter, general features of each geological unit are presented (for more detailed description, see Chapter 4 of the Supporting Report). 1) Pre-Karoo Basement Red sandstones and shales of the Fish River Subgroup of the upper Nama Group underlie the Karoo succession throughout most of the basin. They outcrop to the west and south. They have been intersected below the Karoo in boreholes in the study area such as the deep Vreda core borehole (Wilson, 1965) and JICA test borehole No. J-9A: Klein Swartmodder (in detail, see Chapter 3 of this report and Chapter 6 of the Supporting Report). Very few of the water boreholes have been drilled through the Karoo into this in the northern basement area. 2) Karoo Sequence The Karoo Sequence in the Stampriet Artesian Basin, in terms of the SACS (1980) nomenclature, consists of a basal Dwyka Group, overlain successively by the Prince Albert Formation, the Rietmond Member and the Whitehill Member. The Rietmond Member is included as a formation at the top of the Prince Albert Formation. The Whitehill Member remains a formation on its own at the top of the succession in accordance with the 1:1 million geological map of Namibia since it overlies the Rietmond Member conformably (Heath, 1972). (1) Dwyka Group The Dwyka Group is uppermost Carboniferous to earliest Permian in age. The Dwyka Group thickens significantly to the south, being 100 m thick in the Mariental area and 210 m thick in the Asab area.

Bruce Elliott-Litchfield, Chair Professor Tami Bond, Colorado State University Professor Alan Hansen Professor Timothy Johnson, University of Illinois at Chicago Associate Professor Luis Rodriguez Abstract Improved and efficient cooking is a popular solution in the international development community for its presence in multiple Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). However, in the last forty years of cookstove research and dissemination programs, adoption and sustained use have failed to meet expectations in low- and middle-income countries. Among the known barriers that limit adoption is effective communication. Rarely are all stakeholders within a home purposefully engaged in activities meant to support initial cookstove uptake and long-term use. Situated in rural Namibia, two studies were undertaken to examine household energy consumption patterns and the agentive capacity of youth in influencing energy-related behaviors and decisions within the home, and across communities. A stratified survey of two rural communities, and a series of surveys given to one thousand Namibian children who attended a weeklong Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) program, point to the importance of the inclusion of youth in energy development efforts. Conducted in collaboration with the Namib Desert Environmental Education Trust (NaDEET) these studies examine how ESD-focused programming for youth changes their environmental- and energy-related knowledge and attitudes, and their ability to affect change within their own homes and communities.

    Chapter13 Socio Economic Aspects CHAPTER 13 SOCIO-ECONOMIC ASPECTS 13.1 National Level 13.1.1 Administration As of 1999 there are 19 ministries within the prime minister’s cabinet. Local administration is organized by 13 regional offices and local authorities which include 28 districts (16 municipalities, 12 towns) and 16 villages. Regions are divided into three; northern region covering Caprivi, Kunene, Ohangwena, Okavango, Omasati, Oshana, Oshikoto, and central region covering Erongo, Khomas, Omaheke, Otjozondjupa, and southern region covering Hardap and Karas. Each region has a regional council which deal with population distribution, natural and other resources, and the economic development potential of the region as well as the existing and planned infrastructure in sectors such as water, electricity, communication networks and transport system in the region on behalf of the central government. The councils organized in each municipality, town and village are responsible for various administrative services for the people local level. Table 13.1-1 shows the socio-economic indicators at national level. 13.1.2 Socio-Cultural Profiles 1) Population The total population of Namibia in 1991 was 1.41 million which increased with an annual average growth rate of 3.16 % from 1981 (UNDP estimated it at 1.6 million in 1997), which consists of 73% in rural and 27% in urban areas. The area of the country is 824,292 sq. km representing an average population density of 1.7 persons per sq. km, with a significant variation in density among the regions. The total number of households in 1991 was estimated at 82,864 with an average family size of 5.7 persons with 4.8 persons in urban and 6.1 persons in rural area.
