Message from the Riverdale Festival of the Arts Group

The mission of the Riverdale Festival of the Arts Group/RFA is to enrich the Riverdale Community by bringing diverse groups, across all ages, races and religions, together through a series of specially created cultural events and festivals. Our goal is to create, build, and grow a vibrant, connected and engaged Riverdale community for its residents and businesses by leveraging the universal power of live music, theater, street performers and original art.

Enjoy! About the Riverdale Festival of the Arts Organizers

Lisa Cooper, Owner, Elisa Contemporary Art Art has always been an essential part of Lisa’s life. Professionally, she spent 20+ yrs directing marketing campaigns for some of the world’s top brands including IBM and Chase. She managed Interactive and Relationship Marketing depart- ments for Mercedes-Benz for six years before starting, Elisa Contemporary Art - her Art Gallery and Dealership in 2007. Lisa opened the Riverdale Gallery in 2008 and art consulting business in 2009. The gallery has been featured in publications including: American Art Collector, Hamptons Cottages & Gardens, New York Spaces, Ocean Home Maga- zine, and our exhibits have been selected as top picks by NYC Arts, and WCBS. Over the past years, Elisa Contemporary Art has participated in high-end art fairs and Lisa has curated 12 shows in art spaces within the Tri-State area. She has been a juror for sev- eral Gallery shows, a guest lecturer at School of Visual Arts and Queens College, and is currently a member of the Arts & Architecture Review Committee at Saint Peter’s Church in NYC. She was selected to curate an online exhibit for the 2011 Curate NYC, a production of Brian Tate/Danny Simmons. Lisa is a Fieldston Alumni, Wash U. St. Louis grad and lives in Riverdale with her husband Mitch.

Linda Manning, Linda Manning Productions Linda Manning is an award-winning playwright and performer. Linda's new play, Bite The Apple, was produced as part of the August 2012 New York International Fringe Festival. Bite The Apple was originally workshopped in February 2011 at The Directors Company in . In the spring of 2011 she received a BRIO Award from Council on the Arts for her screenplay Learning to Drive. In 2007 her play GUY was a semi-finalist at the Eugene O’Neill Theater Center National Playwrights Conference. Her play DO SOMETHING WITH YOURSELF! The Life of Charlotte Brontë was published by Smith and Kraus and has been performed throughout the country. She co-founded The Invisible Theatre in New York City, and has performed in numer- ous productions regionally and in New York. She received a B.A. in Theatre from the University of Colorado, and a M.A. in Theatre from Trinity Rep Conservatory in Providence, Rhode Island. Find out more at www.LindaSManning.com.

Tracy McCabe Shelton, Executive Director, Kingsbridge- Riverdale-Van Cortlandt Development Corporation/KRVC Serving her community has always been Tracy’s passion. In April 2010, Tracy took over as KRVC’s Executive Director with extensive experience in the public interest and strong community ties and involvement. In her two and a half year tenure at KRVC, the fiscal sponsor of the Riverdale Festival of the Arts, she has developed an ambitious and extensive program of activities, initiatives and events for the organization and our community. Prior to becoming Executive Director of KRVC, for nearly two decades, Tracy worked for the New York Public Interest Research Group/NYPIRG as a Consumer Attorney. Tracy moved to Riverdale in 2002 with her family. Tracy served as co-President of the Parents Association of PS 24 for four years (2005-2009) and is currently serving , for the second year, as the Auction co-Chair for the Bronx High School of Science. The Fall 2011 and Spring 2012 Riverdale Festival of the Arts brought together thousands of people in two single days to celebrate the arts through a range of diverse programming and attractions. We reached across all demographics within Riverdale and neighboring communities. Our festival publicity and outreach efforts reached over 5 million people!

An extensive promotion campaign is an integral part of the planning for our festivals. News releases are sent out a month in advance with regular follow-up to numerous media outlets.

Our festivals and festival promotions have been on the Associated Press wire, and featured on News 12 and BronxNet, and in the New York Times, Daily News, Riverdale Press, Macaroni Kids and more. Elisa Contemporary Art was launched in November 2007 by Lisa Cooper. The Riverdale Gallery was opened in September 2008. In addition to ongoing exhibits in gallery space, Elisa Contemporary Art has participated in International Air Fairs in New York, the Hamptons and , and curated 12 public and private art exhibits throughout the Tri-State area. The gallery has been featured in publications including: American Art Collector, Hamptons Cottages & Gardens, New York Spaces, Ocean Home Magazine, the NewYork Times and our exhibits have been selected as top picks by NYC Arts, and WCBS. We represent artists from around the world, from emerging through late career. We believe in the power of art to positively transform and impact our lives, and donate a portion of each gallery sale to charities helping underserved children heal through art. Free Arts NYC, Arts to Grow and Creative Arts Workshops for Kids are supported. Lisa has been selected as a guest juror and curator for other Gallery shows and 2011 CurateNYC,: has guest lectured at School of Visual Arts and Queens College; and hosted events on “The Art of Collecting.” She is currently a member of the Arts & Architecture Review Committee at Saint Peter’s Church (home of the Louise Nevelson white chapel) in Manhattan. Lisa also is an art consultant sourcing artwork from artists and galleries around the world, across all budgets, styles and mediums.

The mission of the Casita Maria Center for Arts and Education is to empower youth and their families by creating a culture of learning through high quality social, ‘cultural, and educational opportunities. “Casita Kids” include Tito Puente, Rita Moreno, and Tina Ramirez, the founder of Ballet Hispanico, of all generations stating that it was the Casita Maria programs that supported them on their climb out of poverty and gave them the tools to succeed. The Riverdale Art Association was created in 1999, by a small group of artists for the pur- pose of exhibiting, selling their work and sharing information about art in all its forms. The founders of RAA met in their homes and became exposed to each others' artistic talents. It was established that there would be monthly business meetings with visiting artists, trips to museums, exploring environs to sketch, paint and photograph in the community and be- yond. Riverdale Art Association has had exhibitions in Apple Bank, Sterling Glen at Forest Hills, The Riverdale Neighborhood House, The Elizabeth Seton Library of the College of Mount Saint Vincent, Manhattan College, the Riverdale and Midtown Manhattan Atrias, The Riverdale YM/YWHA, the Bronx Borough President's Office, Cabrini Nursing Home, Billy's Gallery and the Ginger Grill Restaurant. Free Arts NYC programs inspire children to re-imagine their worlds and transform their lives through the creative arts. With the help of dedicated and caring volunteer mentors, Free Arts NYC delivers creative arts programs directly to low income, homeless, abused and neglected children. We partner with group homes, shelters, schools and community centers to give children the opportunity to express themselves in a supportive environment in order to develop communication and trust. Our programs and the relationships they foster help children and families experience new levels of hope and creativity. Free Arts NYC volunteers and facilitators give all of the children and families we work with a high level of personal attention. Our volunteer to child ratio is often 1:1 and, at most, 1:3. We are able to reach these ratios without exorbitant expense because of our unique volunteer model. Since 1998, found- ing Director Liz Hopfan has taken the nonprofit from a budget of $100,000 to over $2,000,000. Free Arts NYC volunteers have now served over 24,000 children and families.

The Institutes of Applied Human Dynamics, Inc. (IAHD) is a non-profit organi- zation that provides services for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities in the Bronx and Westchester. As part of this program Dynamic Expressions Art Gallery exhibits and sells art and craft by individuals with disabilities at IAHD as well as local artists. The focus of the gallery is to promote awareness and appreciation of the breadth, beauty and provocative work produced by artists with developmental disabilities; to educate members of the community in the artistic expressions of artists with developmental disabilities through exhibitions, shows, seminars, discussions, workshops, and demonstrations; to provide prevocational, volunteer and mentoring experiences for people with developmental disabilities; to reach out to artists in a range of diverse settings such as OPWDD, schools, uni- versities, art studios, art programs and museums as well as from local and the greater New York area; and to provide artists from a variety of community settings an exhibit space to dis- play their work as well as to share their creative artistic experiences.

According to Arnie, "I’ve always felt an isolation among the groups -- a sense of separateness. My goal is to have a positive impact on the community of Riverdale -- to connect the separate clusters into a more cohesive whole." For over twenty years, New York Digital Photographer, Arnold Adler has been a go-to resource for executive portraiture and business photography. His Client list is an international Who’s Who of Fortune 500 companies and magazines, including Pfizer, MCI, BMW, NYU, and JP Morgan Chase. He is also a member of ASMP, the Association of Media Professionals.

Michael Mendel German-born, Holocaust survivor Michael Mendel will share his water- Riverdale NY color paintings in May. Painting under the pseudonym "Zepel," he win- ters in New York (Riverdale) and summers at his 100 year old farmhouse in the Catskill Mountains. His art reflects his environs by focusing on everyday objects and activities. He meanders through pastureland and mountain trails, yet also explores the streets, parks and misty water- fronts of a landscape he calls "Urbania". Formerly an award-winning record album cover designer for over thirty years, his designs graced the albums of Tony Bennett, Leonard Bernstein, Johnny Cash and Stan Getz (just to name a few). He has recently exhibited his artwork at the National Arts Club (NY), Lyme Arts Association (CT), Woodstock Arts Fair (NY) and Washington Square Outdoor Art Exhibit (NY)

Lucrecia Novoa received her BA in Fine Arts from the University of Lucrecia Novoa Chile. She has been exhibiting her sculptures and masks since 1997. Riverdale, NY According to Lucrecia, "I combine masks, costumes, and storytelling www.mascaraviva.com to interpret the folk traditions, myths and legends of different cultures.” She creates her masks from papier mâché, carta pesta (layers of paper), pulp, plaster, homemade glues and a range of natural materials (feathers, textiles). She has exhibited throughout the East Coast and inspired those young and old to create their own.

Emmanuel Jaquez According to New York artist, Emmanuel Jaquez, " As an Artist I seek New York, NY to express myself in different ways using different mediums, to ex- plore different subjects, and to discover what is in me and to show it to the world, to share my ideas with others. I don’t have one single focus; I just do what I feel at the moment. My goal when I create a piece is for each art piece to stand on its own, to express a feeling, evoke an emotion in the observer, or just to tell a simple story. I aim to let an idea grow, with myself as the bridge between it and the physical world."

Kathryn R. Jones [email protected] According to emerging artist, Kathryn Jones, her painting allows her to " focus so intently that I lose sense of time and place - achieving a sense of well-being and peace no matter what current my “true-world” condition is...I watched a video of Professor Jill Bolte Taylor speak at a TED conference describing a stroke that arrested the function of the left side of her brain. That shifted all of her thinking over to the right side and produced a nirvana ef- fect. She also realized that everyone could experience this shift in thinking through meditation. I achieve it through painting – a right-brained activity." Children’s Activities

Adam Auslander, street performer, strolling, juggling, hat tricks, plate spinning and more! For Adam Auslander, entertaining people is a way of life. After graduating from their highly acclaimed clown school in 1988, Adam spent a year with Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Circus touring major U.S. cities. He describes it as one of the greatest experiences of his life. "Doing something fun, wacky, and creative" was encour- aged every day. Adam has also worked with the Big Apple Circus, appeared on the Rosie O'Donnell Show and the Late Show with David Letterman, and annually trains the clowns for the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. His profes- sional experience also includes acting in a wide variety of commercials, short films, and off-Broadway productions.

Kidaroo is an indoor play and enrichment center inspired by the children of Riverdale. At Kidaroo, children ages 0-10, will hop into an enriched environment, which benefits their intellectual, physical, emotional and social development. Scribble Art Workshop provides after-school art classes, life draw- ing sessions, museum trips, toddler classes and family workshops. We believe that all people can enjoy and experience the arts. At the forefront of a growing trend in supplemental education, Adventure Center has recognized the value of non school-based educational opportunities for youth and the critical role that this support plays in success in their school endeavors and in their lives. The Riverdale Y is celebrating the fall season today with a vibrant, art workshop: The Riverdale Y is offering a fun fall art project for kids. Fall can be a beautiful season full of rich colors. We will encourage children to take inspiration from the world around us to create their own colorful leaves. Children will get the chance to use several different mediums of their choosing including tissue paper, watercolor and colored pencils. This activity will be lead by experienced After School staff members from our Kids’ Space and Y Care programs.

Entertainment

Suzanna Choffel

Suzanna, born and raised in Austin, Texas, was nost recently seen on NBC's The Voice. She placed third in the 2012 International Songwriting Competition's Performance Category for "Stumble."

Suzanna captured the big musical heart of Austin with her independently released debut album, "Shudder & Rings." The Austin Chronicle dubbed her Austin’s "Next Fun Fearless Female Rock Star." Music critic Jim Caliguiri calls Choffel "one of the most innovative singer-songwriters Austin has to offer". Driven by the single, “Hey Mister,” and a YouTube hit for the video of “Raincloud,” Suzanna wrapped-up three-years of pro- moting and touring for the album by winning the Austin Music Award for “Indie Art- ist of the Year” in 2009. Along the way she also won top honors in the John Lennon Songwriting Competition, International Songwriting Competition, and the FameCast competition.

The Joe Farnsworth Jazz Trio

Joe Farnsworth is one of the most recorded drummers on the jazz scene with over 100 cd’s behind him, for musicians such as Wynton Marsalis, Cedar Walton and Pharoah Sanders. His recordings as a leader are "Beautiful Friendship" featuring pianist Cedar Walton, "It’s Prime Time", and "Drumspeak."

Joe grew up in a musical family in South Hadley, Massachusetts. While studying at William Paterson College in New Jersey Joe met and be- friended Harold Mabern who introduced him to tenor saxophonist George Coleman. Both became major influences on Joe's playing. After moving to NYC he became the leader on Friday and Saturday nights at the infamous jazz club Augie’s (now Smoke). He began working with John Hendriks in 1992 and then Diana Krall off and on until he became a full member for a year a half from 1999-2000. Joe can be seen at all the best NYC jazz clubs, and he tours regularly worldwide. Most recently Joe toured with McCoy Tyner. And he is a featured player at Linda's Jazz Nights in Riverdale.

Mike DiRubbo began his musical life as a junior high school clarinetist, and switched to alto saxophone at 12. A primarily self-taught saxophonist, he developed into a talented instru- mentalist drawn inexorably to the notion of improvising. Mike studied at the Jackie McLean Institute of Jazz of the Hartt School, University of Hartford.

Mike has gone on to perform regularly as both a leader and a sideman in and around NYC and abroad. He can be seen regularly at clubs in NYC , and at Festivals worldwide. Mike has seven critically-acclaimed CDs as a leader: his latest, “Four Hands, One Heart." He has also been featured on numerous recordings as a sideman. Mike has been a resident artist at the Litchfield Jazz Camp. Most recently he has been a guest in- structor at SUNY Purchase in NY, at William Patterson University’s jazz program, at New York University, at the Jackie McLean Institute and is a saxophone tutor at the New School in NYC. www.mikedirubbo.com

Grammy Award winning bassist Phil Palombi is "one of the most sought after young bass players", according to Steely Dan tenor saxophonist and renowned jazz musician Walt Weiskopf. Since moving to NYC in 1997, Phil is moving through the ranks of the New York Jazz elite. His resume now includes recordings and/or performances with Michael Brecker, Billy Hart, Joe Lovano, Dave Liebman, Etta Jones, and Chris Potter to name a few.

Linda Manning of Linda Manning Productions and a co-founder of the Riverdale Festival of the Arts Group, produced the entertainment portion of this festival.
