  • The Twenty Greatest Music Concerts I've Ever Seen
THE TWENTY GREATEST MUSIC CONCERTS I'VE EVER SEEN Whew, I'm done. Let me remind everyone how this worked. I would go through my Ipod in that weird Ipod alphabetical order and when I would come upon an artist that I have seen live, I would replay that concert in my head. (BTW, since this segment started I no longer even have an ipod. All my music is on my laptop and phone now.) The number you see at the end of the concert description is the number of times I have seen that artist live. If it was multiple times, I would do my best to describe the one concert that I considered to be their best. If no number appears, it means I only saw that artist once. Mind you, I have seen many artists live that I do not have a song by on my Ipod. That artist is not represented here. So although the final number of concerts I have seen came to 828 concerts (wow, 828!), the number is actually higher. And there are "bar" bands and artists (like LeCompt and Sam Butera, for example) where I have seen them perform hundreds of sets, but I counted those as "one," although I have seen Lecompt in "concert" also. Any show you see with the four stars (****) means they came damn close to being one of the Top Twenty, but they fell just short. So here's the Twenty. Enjoy and thanks so much for all of your input. And don't sue me if I have a date wrong here and there.

Wild Onions Wild Onions, the title of our journal, has raised a good deal of speculation. The wild onion is a common garden-variety weed, a hardy plant that grows almost anywhere and tends to spring up in unexpected places throughout the woods, fields and roadsides in this part of the country. It blossoms into an unusual purple flower and its underground bulb, if tasted, yields a pungent, spicy flavor. The wild onion is a symbol of the commonplace yet surprising beauty that is living and growing around us all the time, the spice that though uncultivated, unexpectedly thrives and – if we only take time to notice – enhances life. 1 FIRST PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH East Moline, Illinois Pastor Becky Sherwood April 4, 2021, Easter Sunday Psalm 118:1-2, 14-24, John 20:1-18 THE SOUND OF LOVE I don’t know about you, but one of the things I love about the spring is the return to the songbirds; they make early morning walks so amazing. I keep my window open, even on cold nights, because birdsong is so much better than an alarm clock in the morning. As it’s begun to warm up a little bit outside, mornings have also brought more people walking by my house; this means that starting very early in the morning my neighbor’s three dogs bark at every single dog being taken for a walk past their fence. Each of our mornings has its own sounds that are part of our getting up. We may not always be completely aware of those sounds, but we know when they are missing, or have changed. During the past year or so I’ve been listening to a devotional app on my phone called Lectio365. One of the things I’ve appreciated about the devotions are their invitations to enter into Bible stories using all of our senses. So, this week I’ve been thinking about the sounds that were a part of Jesus’ life, and this morning I invite you to listen with me: Let us listen to: the sounds of the carpenter’s shop that filled most of his life, the sounds of family life as brothers and sisters were born to Mary and Joseph, the sounds of the men praying around him in the synagogue as he grew into manhood, the sound of sandals walking dusty roads, the sound of fishing nets hitting the waters of the Sea of Galilee, the sounds of invitation: “come and follow me and I will make you fish for people,” the sounds of joy as those who were lame could walk, those who were blind could see, and those who were deaf could hear.

It seems fitting that I would develop a dissertation topic on suntanning in sunny Santa Barbara, where students literally live at the beach. While at the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB), I have had the fortunate experience of learning from and working with several remarkable individuals. First and foremost, my advisor Bruce Robertson has been a model for successfully pursuing both academic and curatorial endeavors, and his encyclopedic knowledge has always steered me in the right direction. Laurie Monahan, whose thoughtful persistence attracted me to UCSB and whose passion for art history and teaching students has been inspiring.
