S UH V E Y , I ) <l I MALCOLM REID EMPORIUM 187-193 Rundle Street Historically, this building is significant because of its association with the firm of Malcolm Reid and Co, long established merchants of Adelaide. This building underscored the success and expansion of the firm. Malcolm Reid and Co had branches also at Port Adelaide and Broken Hill - thereby exemplifying the economic dominance of Adelaide in the South Australiai:i economy. Other branches were established at Johannesburg and London. The plans for this building for the South Australian Company were approved, 1st March, 1909. Architecturally this range of buildings is strongly related to the adjoining Austral Hotel which is similarly detailed. Tite complete range of buildings occupying a large percentage of two town acres is typical of a substantial '1boom period" terrace with stuccoed Italianate detail to strings, cornices and surrounds to openings. Environmentally this building is significant because it is a strong element in Rundle Street and because it complements the building immed­ iately to the east. The integrity of the building is high. This item was recommended by the Lord Mayor's Advisory Committee's consultants and subsequently recommended by the Lord Mayor's Heritage Advisory Committee as well. Historically, the Malcolm Reid Emporium is important because of its association with the compan~, Malcolm Reid & Co., a leading merchant from the 1880 1 s. Branches were established both Interstate and overseas. Architecturally, the Malcolm Reid Emporium is strongly related to the adjoining Austral Hotel which is similarly detailed. The complete row is typical of a substantial "boom pedod 11 commercial terrace with stuccoed Italianate detailing. Environmentally, the Malcolm Reid Emporium is significant as a major element on the Rundle Street East streetscape. It is also architecturally one of the best and largest facades. The Integrity of the Malcolm Reid Emporium is high, although the lower shop front and verandahs have been modernised. The Malcolm Reid building is not on the National Trust or National Estate Registers but has been recommended by the Lord Mayor's Heritage Advisory Committee.     W Some of our names have apparently been given to the places by drunken bushmen andfrom our scrupulosity in interfering with the liberty of the subject, an inflection of no light character has to be borne by those who come after them. SheaoakLog ispassable... as it has an interesting historical association connectedwith it. But what shall we say for Skillogolee Creek? Are we ever to be reminded of thin gruel days at Dotheboy’s Hall or the parish poor house. (Register, 7 October 1861, page 3c) Wabricoola - A property North -East of Black Rock; see pastoral lease no. 1634. Waddikee - A town, 32 km South-West of Kimba, proclaimed on 14 July 1927, took its name from the adjacent well and rock called wadiki where J.C. Darke was killed by Aborigines on 24 October 1844. Waddikee School opened in 1942 and closed in 1945. Aboriginal for ‘wattle’. ( See Darke Peak, Pugatharri & Koongawa, Hundred of) Waddington Bluff - On section 98, Hundred of Waroonee, probably recalls James Waddington, described as an ‘overseer of Waukaringa’. Wadella - A school near Tumby Bay in the Hundred of Hutchison opened on 1 July 1914 by Jessie Ormiston; it closed in 1926. Wadjalawi - A tea tree swamp in the Hundred of Coonarie, west of Point Davenport; an Aboriginal word meaning ‘bull ant water’. Wadmore - G.W. Goyder named Wadmore Hill, near Lyndhurst, after George Wadmore, a survey employee who was born in Plymouth, England, arrived in the John Woodall in 1849 and died at Woodside on 7 August 1918. W.R. Wadmore, Mayor of Campbelltown, was honoured in 1972 when his name was given to Wadmore Park in Maryvale Road, Campbelltown.

The South Australian Government has recognised that awareness by passing the South Australian Heritage Act, 1978, for which the Minister for Environment and Planning is responsible.In accordance with the provisions of the Act, the Register of State Heritage Items is being compiled. Where the Minister considers that an item (defined as any land, building or structure) that is not on the Register is part of physical, social or cultural heritage of the State and that the .item is of significant aesthetic, architectural, historical· or cultural then the Minister may enter that item on the Register. Pursuant to the provisions of the South Australian Heritage Act, 1978, I, Don Hopgood, Minister for Environment and ..::��:nnmg and Minister for the time being administering the said Act, hereby give notice that I have entered on the Register of State Items the items described in the schedule hereunder. Items listed in the schedule were previously placed on an Interim List in accordance with the provisions of section 15 of South Australian Heritage Act, 1978. Excepting items owned by the Crown and those within the area of the corporation of the city of Adelaide, the remaining items listed in The Schedule are subject to Part V of the Planning Act, 1982. This special meeting of Council was called by Mayor Aughey in accordance with the requirements of the Local Government Act. There is no debate or decision making at a public hearing – the purpose is to provide those people who have made submissions to present their views to Council. The Mayor would normally allow up to five (5) minutes for each presentation.     T Do Cockney names sound better than Nuccaleena, Angipena…? Paratoo, Kapunda, etc? There used to be a watercourse up north called ‘Breakfast Time Creek’ because the old bullock-drivers, starting early, always made it at tucker time. The natives called it ‘Malthiecowie’ (cool water) which was certainly as appropriate and much more musical… (Register, 25 July 1900, page 7d) Table Lands - A government school near Eudunda; opened in 1895, it closed in 1920. Earlier, circa 1870, a Lutheran school of the same name was conducted on section 248, Hundred of Julia Creek, taking its name from a ‘table’ or plateau of flat land north of Saint Kitts. Tabor - In 1850, this German village in the Mount Lofty Ranges was reported as being named after a town in Bohemia, Germany. Tailem Bend - In the early 1840s, George Mason was a police trooper at Wellington (later, he became Sub- protector of Aborigines) and it is recorded that he said, ‘the scrub blacks called the place “Thealem”, which probably means “bend”.’ (See Marmon Jabuk & Mason) Of interest, also, is the fact that Donald Gollan called his sheep run ‘Taleam’. Professor N.B. Tindale says it derives from teigalang; teigai - ‘to miss aim’ for it was here Ngurunderi failed for a second time to kill the giant Murray Cod, Ponde. On 19 February 1846 the Government Gazette recorded that occupation licences had been issued to Messrs Archibald Cooke, John Morphett and John Gifford over land in the near vicinity. (See Cooke Plains & Gifford Hill) The town was proclaimed on 28 July 1887 and Tailem Bend School opened in 1902; a photograph of students is in the Observer, 10 October 1908, page 3.
