The structure roughly follows the divisions set out in Of the Creatures (probably written in the mid-1650’s), considering first the joy of the uncreated order, that is, the joy of God both in his essential unity, and within the relationships of the Trinity, and then the joy of the created order, in the lives of angels and human beings. The study argues that Goodwin sees God’s joy as eternal, being based on both his ‘intrinsecal’ and ‘extrinsecal’ life. That is, God rejoices in who he is and in what he does. The study will demonstrate that Goodwin considered all true joy as being fundamentally derived from God’s joy, and that true Christian joy is known only to the degree in which God, in Christ, is revealed to the saint. The study will argue that Goodwin understands the saint to be on a journey of progression from nature, to grace, and on to glory which is characterised by increasingly clear visions of God; initially seeing God by faith in Christ, then seeing God in the actual presence of Christ, and ultimately in sharing the view of God that Christ himself has. The study shows that Goodwin has some distinct views when expositing Ephesians 1:13, leading to an understanding of the sealing of the Spirit that throws some light on the immediate experience of joy in the Holy Spirit. The study will conclude that while Goodwin is notable in the clarity of his description of the increasing joy of the saint, he is entirely consistent with the Augustinian-Calvinist view of joy which, in Goodwins’ words, is simply that ‘God, known and enjoyed; is the supreme happiness of Man in all Conditions...’ 2 Contents Introduction degree to which they combine theological breadth with experimental depth. However, a growing trend, particularly in North America, has seen an increased awareness of Reformed theology, and with it a renewed interest in the theology and writing of the Puritans.2 Like Packer and Lloyd-Jones in the middle of the twentieth century, contemporary Reformed pastor-theologians seek to recover the heart of the Puritan message and free both them, and evangelicalism, from the image of strait-laced bigotry, and revive a sense of God-honouring, life-enriching, joy in the goodness and sovereignty of God. This resur- gence can be directly attributed to issues emerging from recent Protestant- Catholic dialogue on justification and the exegetical controversies prompted by the New Perspective on Paul. Central to discussion on either front is the topic of the imputation of Christ’s righteousness, specifically, whether or not it is true to the biblical data. As expected, this has given way to some heated discussion with salvos of criticism being launched by both sides of the de- bate. For some authors a denial of the imputation of Christ’s righteousness as the sole grounds of justification amounts to a virtual denial of the gospel itself and an attack on the Reformation. Others, by jettisoning belief in im- puted righteousness, perceive themselves as returning to the historical mean- ing of justification and emancipating the Church from its Lutheranism. In view of this it will be the aim of this essay, in dialogue with the main pro- tagonists, to seek a solution that corresponds with the biblical evidence and may hopefully go some way in bringing both sides of the debate together. ii. a short history of imputed righteousness since the reformation It is beneficial to preface contemporary disputes concerning justification by identifying their historical antecedents.     COLONIAL AMERICA’S REJECTION OF FREE GRACE THEOLOGY L. E. BROWN Prescott, Arizona I. INTRODUCTION Many Free Grace adherents assume that grace theology, the de facto doctrine of the first century church, was lost until recently. Such is not the case. Michael Makidon has demonstrated, for example, that Free Grace views surfaced in Scotland in the 18th century Marrow Contro- versy.1 The “Marrow Men” were clear: faith is the sole condition of justi- fication, and assurance is the essence of justifying faith. Eighty years earlier peace was broken in the Massachusetts Bay Col- ony (MBC) over these doctrines. That upheaval, labeled the “Antinomian Controversy,” occupied the MBC for seventeen months from October 1636 to March 1638. The civil and ecclesiastical trials of Anne Hutchin- son (1591-1643), whose vocal opposition to the “covenant of works”2 gained unfavorable attention from the civil authorities, and served as a beard for theological adversaries John Cotton (1585-1652) and Thomas Shepard (1605-1649). This article will survey the three main interpretations intellectual his- torians offer for the Antinomian Controversy. The primary focus will be on the doctrine of assurance, with an emphasis on sixteenth-century Brit- ish Calvinism. We will evaluate the opposing views of John Cotton and Thomas Shepard. But the interference of the hierarchy and the Governments in the life of the University was not all that it had to suffer. London as well as Westminster exerted its influence, and the Citrus Londinensh in an age of pluralism included several Cambridge men whose contribution to academic developements operated more from the City than in Cambridge. For instance Mr Mullinger complains rightly of Lazarus Seaman's non-residence and indifference as (the Intruded) Master of Peterhouse. But Seaman, who held the City benefice of All Hallows, did not hesitate, though he was admitted Master of Peterhouse in April 1644, to Downloaded from accept office as junior dean of Sion College, London, in April 1645,and to serve the office of President for two years, 1651-2. Among his colleagues on the Court were Arthur Jackson (Mullinger, p. 227) and Thomas Horton, President of Queens'. I am confident that Prepared by Grace, for Grace is destined to be a standard work on the subject. Thank you, Pastor Najapfour. We hope that by God’s grace the book will be useful. Here are some of my questions for you about your book: 1. Could you please briefly define the following terms as used in your book? I think defining these terms will help the readers of this interview better understand your discourse. a. Reformed, Puritan, & evangelical. Reformed refers to the stream of Christianity beginning with sixteenth-century Reformers such as Zwingli and Calvin, and defined by adherence to confessions such as the Heidelberg Catechism and the Westminster Standards. Puritanism was a movement of British Christians from the 1560s through about 1700 that emphasized applying the biblical doctrines rediscovered in the Reformation to one’s personal life, family, church, and nation. The Reformers (including Reformed and Lutheran Christians) called themselves “evangelicals” in the sixteenth century because God has restored to the church the biblical gospel (“evangel”) of salvation by grace alone through faith alone in Christ alone according to Scripture alone for the glory of God alone. The term continues to be used today. b. Doctrine of preparation (Is this doctrine biblical? How is it different from the so- called preparationism?) The doctrine of preparation is the idea that God’s general way of bringing sinners to Christ is to awaken them to a sense of their spiritual need before they trust in Christ to save them.
