Conservation Advice Euphrasia Collina Subspecies Muelleri Purple
THREATENED SPECIES SCIENTIFIC COMMITTEE Established under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 The Minister’s delegate approved this Conservation Advice on 01/04/2016. Conservation Advice Euphrasia collina subspecies muelleri purple eyebright Conservation Status Euphrasia collina subspecies muelleri (purple eyebright) is listed as Endangered under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (Cwlth) (EPBC Act). The subspecies is eligible for listing as prior to the commencement of the EPBC Act, it was listed as Endangered under Schedule 1 of the Endangered Species Protection Act 1992 (Cwlth). The main factors causing the subspecies to be eligible for listing in the Endangered category are that the purple eyebright has suffered a substantial decline in range and abundance. It now survives in only a few widely distributed localities in Victoria. There are estimated to be fewer than 1500 plants remaining in about ten wild populations (DSE 2008; Murphy & Downe 2006). The purple eyebright is listed as threatened under the Victorian Flora and Fauna Guarantee Act 1988 and as Endangered under the non-statutory Advisory List of Rare or Threatened Plants in Victoria. Description The purple eyebright is a semi-parasitic, short-lived, perennial herb growing to 40 cm in height and branching at or slightly above ground level. The upper leaves are 6–14 mm in length, with cuneate (wedge-shaped) bases and up to four pairs of marginal teeth. Flowers are lilac, pink or white, occasionally with a yellow spot behind the lower lobe. The corolla (a whorl within the sepals) is fused at the base and divided into five lobes. -

Biodiversity Summary for NRM Regions Species List What is the summary for and where does it come from? This list has been produced by the Department of Sustainability, Environment, Water, Population and Communities (SEWPC) for the Natural Resource Management Spatial Information System. The list was produced using the AustralianAustralian Natural Natural Heritage Heritage Assessment Assessment Tool Tool (ANHAT), which analyses data from a range of plant and animal surveys and collections from across Australia to automatically generate a report for each NRM region. Data sources (Appendix 2) include national and state herbaria, museums, state governments, CSIRO, Birds Australia and a range of surveys conducted by or for DEWHA. For each family of plant and animal covered by ANHAT (Appendix 1), this document gives the number of species in the country and how many of them are found in the region. It also identifies species listed as Vulnerable, Critically Endangered, Endangered or Conservation Dependent under the EPBC Act. A biodiversity summary for this region is also available. (Orobanchaceae) in Iran Shahryar Saeidi Mehrvarz, Sayad Roohi, Iraj Mehrgan & Elham Roudi Summary: Comparative morphological, anatomical and palynological studies on six species Euphrasia L. (Orobanchaceae) in Iran are presented using plants collected from their type localities and many other populations. Euphrasia petiolaris and E. sevanensis are reported for the flora of Iran for the first time. In terms of anatomy, the phloem/xylem proportion in vascular bundles of stem and root, presence or absence of collenchyma at the periphery of stem cortex, the number of parenchyma cell layers of stem cortex and the thickness of the vascular bundle in the leaf midrib provide valuable characters in distinguishing species. According to the obtained results, the pollen morphology seems also to be taxonomically valuable. The main shapes observed among investigated taxa were spheroidal, oblate- spheroidal and prolate-spheroidal. The pollen grains were tricolpate and microrugulate, micropilate and microgemmate on exine surface. The relationships between taxa were estimated by analyzing the scored morphological, anatomical and palynological data using the Euclidian distance coefficient and UPGMA clustering method. Keys are provided for identification of the species of Euphrasia in Iran based on both morphological and anatomical features. Huang3 Key words Abstract Species of Euphrasia are distributed in both hemispheres with a series of connecting localities on the mountain peaks of Taiwan and the Malesian region including Luzon, Borneo, Sulawesi, Seram and New Guinea. biogeography Two hypotheses are proposed to explain this distribution pattern. The Northern Hemisphere might have been the Euphrasia centre of origin or the Southern Hemisphere. This study aims to reconstruct the core phylogeny of Euphrasia in the phylogeny connecting areas and tries to identify the migratory direction of Euphrasia in Taiwan and Malesia. The phylogeny rps2 gene sequence of Euphrasia, including sections Euphrasia, Malesianae and Pauciflorae, is reconstructed with the chloroplast trnL intron sequence molecular markers rps2 gene, trnL intron and trnL-trnF intergenic spacer. The results suggest that the migratory trnL-trnF intergenic spacer sequence direction between Taiwan and the Philippines is possibly from the north to the south. However, the migratory direc- tion within section Malesianae and the centre of origin of Euphrasia remain unanswered from our data. More data is needed to clarify this issue. Euphrasia officinalis (synonym: eyebright) is an aggregate of several Euphrasia subspecies, which are plants of the family Scrophulariaceae. Euphrasia is a frequent hemiparasite in grassland populations in North and Middle Eurasia, growing either unattached or attached to various host plants. The homeopathic mother tincture is prepared by ethanolic extraction of the entire flowering plant according to homeopathic pharmacopoeias. Significant constituents of Euphrasia officinalis are iridoid glycosides. Aucubin, catapol, euphroside, eurostoside (10-p-cumaroylaucubin, 0.04%), geniposide, 7,8-dihydrogeniposid (adoxosid), ixoroside and mussaenoside in the dried herb of Euphrasia rostkoviana have been identified. Aucubin and ixoroside are found in Euphrasia stricta. The content of aucubin in the dried total plant of Euphrasia stricta was 0.94%. In above-ground parts of Euphrasia rostkoviana phenolic acids were found, such as caffeic acid (102 mg/kg), ferulic acid (traces), vanillic acid (6 mg/kg) and, following acid hydrolysis, chlorogenic acid (18.5 mg/kg), gallic acid (10.5 mg/kg), gentisinic acid, p-hydroxy phenylpyruvic acid, protocatechuic acid (together with gentisinic acid 48 mg/kg). Further constituents were phenylpropanoid glycosides, such as leucosecptoside A in herbs of Euphrasia rostkoviana, lignans (dehydro-coniferyl alcohol 4b- glycoside, 0.013% of the dry total plant) and mannit in the herbal parts. Additional constituents of Euphrasia are tertiary alkaloids, phytosterols (b-sitosterol, stigmasterol), flavones such as apigenin, chrysoeriol and luteolin, and galactosides as well as flavonolglycosides like quercetin- 3-glycoside, quercetin-3-rutinoside and kaempferol-3-rutinoside. -

As a result of collecting and analyzing a material from the Căpătânii Mountains, Beleoaia Peack, material belonging to the Euphrasia genus, we have noticed that it corresponds to a taxon which even now is placed under question in Romania's flora. The analysis of our material according to recent literature has led to the conclusion that the species is part of the E. stricta group, which is recognized by the usually rigid and erect stem and branches. Leaves glabrous to densely hairy, frequently also with short glandular hairs, usually narrowly ovate or elliptical to oblong-lanceolate; floral leaves usually appressed to the flower, with long, very acute to aristate teeth, the basal teeth apically directed. Capsule usually much shorter than calyx, oblong to elliptic-oblong. Within this group, in the 3rd volume of Flora Europaea, 4 species are included: Euphrasia stricta D. Wolff ex J. F. Lehm. (E. brevipila Burnat et Gremli, E. condensata Jordan, E. tatarica auct., non Fischer ex Sprengel), E. hyperborea Joerg., E. pectinata Ten. (E. tatarica Fischer ex Sprengel) and E. liburnica Wettst. From this whole group, in our country's flora are treated only two species: Euphrasia stricta D. Wolff ex J. F. Lehm. -

The monitoring was conducted during 2002–2016 in ranges of the Polish parts of the Carpathians and Sudetes. Field studies revealed periodical occurrence and disappearance of populations in the localities for one or more seasons, which may be connected with the life cycle of annual plants. The phenomena of periodicity occurrence and seed dormancy and their consequences are discussed. Introduction The genus Euphrasia (eyebright) is represented by ca. 350 species worldwide (Fischer 2004). High-moun- tain eyebright species occur at altitudes up to 4 450 m a.s.l. in the Himalayas (Li 1953). In Europe, eyebright species have been found in almost all mountain ranges at altitudes as high as 2 700 m a.s.l. (in the Alps) (Yeo 1978). There are 11 species of eyebright in Poland (Posz 2014, 2016), three of which, E. minima Jacq., E. picta Wimm. and E. corcontica (Smejkal) Smejkal et % are typical for siliceous bedrock. The range of E. salis- burgensis Funck is also limited to mountain areas, but it prefers calcareous bedrock.
