Museum Epiphany III hangs in the Penny and Jeff Vinik Gallery (the salon room of the new American wing), and depicts visitors within that same gallery. This piece is the third of a series of Museum Epiphanies , all depicting the MFA, Boston. “The Epiphany series tries to take advantage of the special quality of the Museum environment, where works of art and the visitors produce a powerful dialogue: between cre - ative minds of the past and both sensitive and distracted viewers of the present. The Epiphany title refers to the sometimes transporting insights which can occur during that dialogue,” said Warren Prosperi. The artist has a deep appre - ciation for the MFA and its visitors, due to the fact that he spent countless hours there as a young artist studying the works and teaching himself how to paint. It is therefore particularly significant to Warren that his work now hangs among the famous artists he spent his youth admiring. Warren Prosperi, Museum Epiphany III Oil on canvas, 35 x 52 inches, 2012 Collection of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston Book releases : Nature and Culture: The Art of Joel Babb In this first-ever overview of Joel Babb’s work, Nature and Culture: e Art of Joel Babb follows the artist’s life and works from his earliest calling to the arts to his mature philosophy and practice of painting. Author Carl Little, the leading writer about New England artists whose work includes Edward Hopper’s New England, e Art of Monhegan Island , and Winslow Homer and the Sea, offers a compelling account of Babb’s evolution as an artist, from his earliest days in Nebraska, through his studies at Princeton University and the school of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, to his move to Maine and his recognition as a preeminent painter of American cities. Filled with illustrations of Babb’s major paintings of Boston, Maine and Rome, Nature and Culture also includes contributions by Christopher Crosman, founding curator of the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art and former director of the Farnsworth Art Museum; Bernd Heinrich, natural historian and author; and Anita Shreve, novelist, to round out this portrait of an American master. Painting Brilliant: Skies and Water in Pastel In 2013, Liz Haywood-Sullivan had a book published by Northlight books titled Painting Brilliant: Skies and Water in Pastel . This book explores the intricacies of painting both subjects through a series of Step-by-Step demonstrations. Illustrated with over 90 of Liz’s paintings, this book has become a well-regarded resource for artists regardless of their medium. Liz has three DVD titles on the market from ArtsNetwork.TV. They are “Painting Realistic Landscapes in Pastel: Skies,” “Painting Realistic Landscapes in Pastel: Water and Reflections,” and “Painting Realistic Landscapes in Pastel: Mixing Greens.” She just completed shooting three more DVDs on the subjects of painting snow, working on different surfaces, and working en plein air. These new DVDs are tentatively scheduled for release by the end of 2013. In June 2013, Liz became the President of the International Association of Pastel Societies. IAPS represents over 70 pastel societies worldwide uniting in a common cause—to demonstrate the valid - ity and quality of fine art in pastel around the world. IAPS holds a convention every two years and annually produces two exhibitions showcasing the talent of its members. Liz also serves on the Advisory Editorial Board for the Pastel Journal , the world’s premier pastel medium publication. Vose Galleries will be hosting a book signing and pastel demonstration by Liz Haywood-Sullivan on December 14th, from 2 - 5pm. Wandering the Coast will underscore the artist’s mastery at portraying the pattern of sunlight and shadow on his subject matter, invoking, besides the visual, the other senses of sound, scent, and even touch. Demers’ work has a timeless quality, reminiscent of the great marine painters of the 19th century—Lane, Bricher, Richards—and his warm chiaroscuro calls to mind the early American Impressionists. Although many artists paint the sea, only the elite few have gone to such lengths as Demers to establish an almost instinctual sense of his subject. Called “The Painter’s Painter” in New York circles, he captured some of America’s most dramatic scenery, particularly the Eastern seaboard from New Jersey to Nova Scotia, in a bold yet intimate style.

  • Women As Readers: Visual Interpretations
Women as Readers: Visual Interpretations LINDA J. DOCHERTY HE PORTRAIT of Anne Pollard (fig. i), one of the icons of early American painting, uses a book to define a type of Tfemale character. Traditionally seen as a document of Puritan history and an example of hnuaer art, this 1721 likeness of a hundred-year-old woman also bears consideration for its iconography. Biography alone fails to explain the literary attribute. According to Pollard's obituary, she was born in Essex, England, came to the New World as young girl, and married a Boston innkeeper in 1643.' She bore her husband thirteen children and, afrer his death, continued to manage the tavern they had opened near the present site of Park Street Church. Pollard must have had a modicum of education, but hardly enough to justify por- trayal with a symbol of authorship and learning most commonly A portion of this article was first presented at a conference sponsored by the American Antiquarian Society's Program in the History of the Book in American Culture on 'Iconography and the Culture of the Book,' held in Worcester on June 14-15, ^')*)^- Research for that presentation was supported by a fellowship ftom the American Council of Learned Societies. ATHENlEUM ITEMS A Library Letter from The Boston Athenceum No. 139 Sunznzer 2008 The Athenceum Acquires a Major Painting by William Paxton HE Boston Athen~um has recently acquired an exquisite late nineteenth-century painting by American artist William McGregor Paxton ( 1869- 1941). It is a portrait of Elizabeth Vaughan Okie, who met Paxton in about 1895 while they were both studying at the Cowles Art School in Boston. It was love at first sight-as clearly documented by the Athen~um's newest acquisi tion-and by the end of the century Paxton and Okie were married. \Villiam Paxton was born in Baltimore, t-.1aryland, in 1869, the only child of James Paxton and Rose Daughert}. His father, a nati\e of J\11assachusetts, had moved with his wife to Baltimore in search of work, but shortly after \Villiam was born they returned to Massachusetts, set tling in Newton, where James established a successful catering and confectionary business. After completing his early schooling in Newton, \1\filliam Paxton won a scholarship in 1887 to the Cowles Art School in Boston, where he was a student of Dennis Miller Bunker. Two years later he went to Paris, where he studied for four years at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts under the French academic master Jean-Leon Gerome. Back in Boston, PaAtOn resumed his tudies at the Cowles School, this time under Joseph R. DeCamp, and began life-long friendships with fello'' tudents Frank Be11son and Edmund Charles Tarbell. s, the end of the century, Paxton was making a reputation for himself a an accom plished portrait painter.

519 West 19th Street Fax 212 727 2072 David Zwirner New York, NY 10011 Telephone 212 727 2070 For immediate release JAMES WELLING Seascape July 10 – August 4, 2017 David Zwirner is pleased to present Seascape (2017), a new film by James Welling at its 519 West 19th Street location. This will be the United States premiere of the work and the artist’s seventh solo presentation at the gallery. In Seascape, Welling combines his family’s past with the histories of cinema, photography, and painting. The film is an homage to the artist’s grandfather, William C. Welling, who studied with the American Impressionist painter Wilson Irvine and corresponded with the seascape painter Frederick Waugh (1861-1940). Using the recently introduced Cine-Kodak Model B 16mm camera, Welling’s grandfather shot the black-and-white reversal footage in the early 1930’s in Ogunquit, Maine, at the suggestion of Waugh. Over the course of two days, he filmed the Atlantic Ocean at Perkins Cove––which was a celebrated site for seascape painters––capturing images of the rocky coast, Seascape, 2017 (video still) which he subsequently used as a basis for a 22 x 27 inch Colorized 16 mm film transferred to digital video, oil painting. For Seascape, Welling took digital color 5:18 min, stereo sound samples of his grandfather’s painting and, working with three animators, colorized the original footage using After Effects and Photoshop. The audio component is a contribution from the artist’s brother, William B. Welling, a musician. The sound, which encompasses a slow, continuous progression of three chords with Foley effects, uses a 1940 “Gloria” accordion, as well as two drums––a 1826 Eli Brown replica snare drum made in 1990 with 32 beach pebbles placed on the drum head and a Remo “Ocean Drum.” As a collaborative work between the artist, his grandfather, and his brother, the film, like Welling’s photographic series “Diary/Landscape” (1977-1986) and “Wyeth” (2010- 2015), extends the artist’s interest in incorporating autobiographical elements into his work.
