I picked up this book because I remembered reading these tales awhile back, when they first came out, and liking them. The stories in this book explore interesting characters and a novel system of magic based on the day you were born and how long you mother was in labor. It was the first in a series of shared world books, where different authors created their own characters and tales in the magical city of Liavek. Liavek 1 City of Luck eBook Emma Bull Gene Wolfe Steven Brust Jane Yolen Nancy Kress Will Shetterly Reviews. A great collection of short stories about a richly developed fantasy setting. I like these collections on a common set of characters and landmarks by different authors in the vein of Robert Asprin's "Thieves' World". Meh. Like all short story collections, some are good, some aren't. I particularly liked Emma Bull's and Steven Brust's contributions. Such a disappointment! I bought the 8 volumes mistakenly thinking that they were written by one of Hobb's names. Now I'm stuck. Hope it gets better. They are hard to follow stories with disconnected storyline Okay, doesn't offer a box to tick for "Excellent". "Great" literature this is not; but "Good" is an unfair slight. One of the best of the "shared world" series, Liavek is also one of the wittiest and cleverest. A number of very good writers offer some very good stories. A number of good writers offer some good stories. First-rate, intelligent entertainment that defies stereotype - cultural, gender and genre. I've longed to read about Liavek since I first heard about the books in the 90's, but wasn't able till now. These short stories about the port city of Liavek are marvelous, and I am thrilled I can finally visit. My only complaint is the books are too short. Bought it for the "Inn of the Demon Camel" which I'd read in another book by Jane Yolen. Enjoyed the various stories and now understand Liavek and the rules of Luck that makes the story perfect for this setting, which I understand was it's original intent. I've had John M. Ford's stand-alone Liavek volume "Casting Fortune" (containing short stories "A Cup of Worrynot Tea" & "Green is the Color", plus the wonderful "The Illusionist") for over 20 years, thinking it a one-off by a little known writer - a treasured "secret gem". Then last fall I see the ad for Liavek 1, 2, 3. Thanks to Ms. Bull's editing & the writers brilliance, I've fallen in love with the Liavek setting all over again! This volume & Liavek 2 are the primers I always wanted to this unusual fantasy realm. WORTH EVERY PENNY! ! Located on the southern shore of the Sea of Luck at the mouth of the Cat River, Liavek is a hot, busy trade city. Magic is present and based on a combination of birth luck and the length of time ones mother was in labor. Everyone is privy to some luck, but using it to their advantage is no easy feat. On an annual basis, luck or magic must be invested in an object outside of oneself, and only then can it be used to power spells. Investment is difficult and dangerous, while not investing luck and magic will result in the magic draining away. This is more prevalent in magicians who will find their life drain away with the magic. 2.1. Works Liavek. Edited by Will Shetterly and Emma Bull, published by Ace Books in 1985.
