Whiskey Menu IRISH WHISKEYS Midleton Distillery The new Midleton Distillery is next to the Old Midleton Distillery, home of the visitor’s centre called The Jameson Experience. Midleton is one of the most modern distilleries in the world and has its production areas linked via fibre- optic networks. The Midleton factory, with a production capacity of 64 million litres per annum, is the largest in Ireland. The distillery boasts three 75,000 litre pot stills, and three column stills, which are used in combinations of three to produce different types of whiskey. Offaly, Ireland in 2014. It is the first new distillery to have been constructed on a greenfield site in Ireland on over 100 years and the first to operate in Tullamore since 1954. In 1829, The Old Tullamore Distillery was established in Tullamore. In the late 1800s, the General Manager and later owner of the distillery, Daniel E. Williams, launched a whiskey named Tullamore Dew, whose name was taken from his initials, D.E.W. Although the whiskey gained significant success, the distillery later closed in 1954 having suffered financial difficulties. However, the brand was kept alive. Bushmills is the only distillery in Ireland to make triple-distilled single malt whiskey. After Midleton Distillery, Bushmills is the second biggest Irish distillery. Irish Whiskey production has left the traditional path of using peat long ago. Thus, the typical Irish style today is unpeated, very smooth, light and fruity. Bushmills whiskey is a perfect example of this style because triple pot still distillation makes this very clear and light. THE RANKING OF THE WORLD’S MILLION-CASE SPIRITS BRANDS 2019 001 Cover DI MILLIONAIRES 2019 FINAL.indd 1 04/06/2019 14:58 The millionaires’ JUNE 2019 DRINKSINT.COM 3 COMMENT The volume game Regardless of Trump’s tariff wars, Brexit and other socio-economic issues, the spirits industry is thriving. And once again The Millionaires’ Club bears witness to the movements of million-case spirits brands all over the globe. Ninety-two of the 153 millionaire brands listed in the 2019 supplement demonstrate an increase in volumes, so the industry shows no signs of slowing down. The biggest volume players are always from Asia due to the huge populations and brand loyalty in major markets, with soju’s Jinro now boasting 87m cases. But it’s also been fascinating to see Diageo’s Indian brandy Men’s Club virtually double in growth despite it showing decline over the previous four years. Looking at Europe, Martell has had a great year. A huge 18% growth shows how cognac is returning to its former glory in terms of international sales and the same can almost be said for vodka in the US as it appears the market is no longer in free-fall, with many of the big players returning to growth. It’s possible that volume sales will dwindle in importance as future generations of consumers continue to drink less but better – quality over quantity. The assets may shrink and the players may change, but this game of volumes isn’t going to end any time soon. The deals included Sapient’s acquisition by Publicis Groupe; Casa Cuervo’s asset exchange with Diageo; and Covance Inc.’s acquisition by LabCorp. Starting in Paris, before U.S. markets opened, on November 3 partners Faiza Saeed and Eric Schiele took the lead advising Sapient Corporation in its $3.7 billion acquisition by Publicis Groupe, a transformative deal that includes the companies building a new joint platform, Publicis.Sapient. The new platform will be "focused exclusively on digital transformation at the convergence of communication, marketing, commerce and technology," Cravath’s Damien Zoubek and Richard Hal (Photo by the firm) according to the company's announcement. • Dr. William Moran
Dr. William Moran Dr. William Moran is remembered by the people of Tullamore with affection and respect. To many parishioners he was seen as a character and there are few of the older parishioners who have not some humorous story to relate concerning him. Dr. Moran came to Tullamore from Trim in October 1949 where he had been parish priest. He was a native of Castletowngeoghegan near Tullamore and was educated at St. Finian’s (Navan) and Maynooth College where he was ordained in 1910. He received a doctorate in divinity in 1913 and after four years as a curate in Mullingar and Collins town he was appointed professor of dogmatic theology in Maynooth in 1917. In 1932 he became prefect of the Dunboyne establishment and librarian in 1932. From there he moved to Trim and in 1949 to Tullamore. Although a competent parish administrator who gave his full support to the local schools building programme of the 1950s, Dr. Moran was happiest among his books and produced a number of books and pamphlets on religious topics including his well known catechism. He also published a number of historical articles including this booklet on the history of Tullamore in 1962. But if Dr. Moran was interested in the past he was also a forward thinking practical man. He seemed to take a special delight in running the annual Corpus Christi procession from the organ gallery of the church with the ‘Tannoy’ system he purchased in 1951. With this system Dr. Moran could broadcast a Maynooth choir for the procession together with a taped recording of his own sermon while he walked around the church and listened, presumably, admiringly, to the whole event.
