A visionary and tough decision by those who have made the environment their resource and will project Abruzzo into a major and leading role in “green tourism”. Overall most of this legacy – but not all – is to be found in the mountains, where the landscapes and ecosystems change according to altitude, shifting from typically Mediterranean milieus to outright alpine scenarios, with mugo pine groves and high-altitude steppe. Danubio3 1 Department of Animal and Human Biology, University »La Sapienza«, Rome, Italy 2 Department of Methods, Economics and Territory, University of Teramo, Teramo, Italy 3 Department of Environmental Studies, University of L'Aquila, L'Aquila, Italy ABSTRACT The seasonality of 27,705 marriages celebrated in a four century span in the Province of Teramo (Abruzzo, Italy) was analyzed to identify the presence of a long-term pattern re- lated to the prevailing subsistence activity and the main factors affecting it. The results show general agreement in all centuries with the agricultural patterns of other lowland or south-central Italian groups (Piedmont, Veneto, Liguria, Emilia Romagna, Tuscany, Latium, Campania, Apulia) and Mediterranean regions (Spain, France), although with some differences. Religious factors strongly affected the timing of marriage only during Lent. Of interest is the progressive increase through the centuries of marriages in the summer-autumn months, associated with a decrease in January and February. XLV, 2011: 47–68 PL ISSN 0081-6434 EMIL GACHEV (BLAGOEVGRAD) INTER-ANNUAL SIZE VARIATIONS OF SNEZHNIKA GLACIERET (THE PIRIN MOUNTAINS, BULGARIA) IN THE LAST TEN YEARS Abstract: Glacierets, which are in fact embryonic forms of recent glaciation, can serve as important indicators of contemporary climate dynamics in areas where classical glaciers do not exist, such as the high mountains in Southeastern Europe. Two glacierets are located in Bulgaria’s Pirin Mountains: Snezhnika and Banski Suhodol. Snezhnika has been relatively well studied for the last 50 years, and in particular since 1994, when annual size measurements on a regular basis started. The present study focuses on the recent variations in the size of Snezhnika i.e. in the last ten years. Data about the area of the glacieret at the end of the ablation season (in autumn), which was obtained for each year by field measurements and analytical calculations, show that temperature can be considered as a major factor that drives glacieret fluctuations. At the current stage precipitation factor can not be evaluated properly due to the deficit of accurate climate information. Safety and Security Engineering 699 The integrated supervision and control system of the Gran Sasso mountain F. Garzia INFOCOM Department, University of Rome “La Sapienza”, Italy Abstract A high safety and security level of a complex system is very difficult to reach, guarantee and manage if the system is characterized by a peculiar complexity and physical extension, due to the elevated number of parameters to be checked and controlled. The use of human resources needs an elevated number of personnel members that could not only be unable to reach the desired goal but could also be exposed to severe risks in the presence of dangerous and emergency situations. For this reason it is necessary to use integrated supervision and control systems that are capable of managing the elevated number of parameters involved, reducing the number of personnel members and increasing their functionalities and operability. In this paper the integrated supervision and control system of the Gran Sasso mountain (Italy), characterized by a high and unique complexity from the international point of view, is illustrated. Keywords: integrated system, telecommunication system, safety system, security system, emergency management system. 1 Introduction The Gran Sasso (“big rock”) mountain is located in the centre of Italy, about 120 km east of Rome, between the L’Aquila city province and Teramo city province, in the Abruzzo region. It belongs to a system of mountains that practically separates the Adriatic sea (east) from Tirrenian sea (west) in the middle of Italy. The higher peak of Gran Sasso mountain is represented by Corno Grande (“big horn”), that is about 3000 metres above the sea level. -

Non-seismic phenomena are characterized by radio disturbances and light emissions as well as degassing of vast areas near the epicenter with chemical alterations of shallow geospheres (aquifers, soils) and the troposphere. Many animals are sensitive to even the weakest changes in the environment, typically responding with behavioral and physiological changes. A specific questionnaire was developed to collect data on these changes around the time of the 2009 L’Aquila earthquake. Abstract: The April 6, 2009 L’Aquila earthquake was the strongest seismic event to occur in Italy over the last thirty years with a magnitude of M = 6.3. Around the time of the seismic swarm many instruments were operating in Central Italy, even if not dedicated to biological effects associated with the stress field variations, including seismicity. Testimonies were collected using a specific questionnaire immediately after the main shock, including data on earthquake lights, gas leaks, human diseases, and irregular animal behavior. The questionnaire was made up of a sequence of arguments, based upon past historical earthquake observations and compiled over seven months after the main shock. -

Le autorità italiane, considerando il massiccio montuoso abruzzese un luogo di prigionia inaccessibile, ne rinforzarono le difese naturali: diversi presidi militari vennero dislocati nei pochi punti ritenuti accessibili. Uno di questi era ad Assergi, località ubicata ai piedi del Gran Sasso, nella stretta valle del Raiale, via d'accesso alla funivia del grande altopiano di Campo Imperatore, che parte dalla contrada Fonte Cerreto.
