Hockey Match Reports

Thursday 2nd Nov- U14 Girls County Hockey Tournament- Runners Up! With 16 teams involved in the county tournament, the tournament was split into 2 sections. With 7 games to play in our group and each game 24 minutes, there was a lot of hockey to be played. In our group games we did not concede one goal which reflected how well the girls were played. As we had 24 minutes in each game we didn’t rush to move the ball forward, we maintained possession of the ball which tired the opposition out and then we moved forward, the gaps appeared and we attacked the space, once one goal came the others continued. The girls transferred the ball well, out skilled the opposition and played simple but effective hockey. We won the group comfortably and went into the second semi-final with lots of positivity and excitement, we were up against Penryn who were going to be a challenge for our girls. Right from start to finish the game was intense and our girls kept pushing to get a goal, I was positive it was going to come but the patience of our players was wearing thin and frustration started to show. Half time came and the girls re-set again and reverted back to the hockey they played in the group games and the goal finally came, we won 1-0 so through to the final we were. With hardly any turnaround time due to the light, the final had to get underway pretty sharpish so the girls went from an extremely intense game straight in to another one. Truro moved the ball well and attacked positively, having the opportunities but couldn’t put the ball away past an extremely versatile and flexible keeper, she was keeping everything out, 0-0 at half time. Going into the second half, the girls were tired after a back to back semi, then final and this now started to show, mistakes happened and gaps appeared, we started playing ping pong and Truro High capitalised on this and took the opportunity they had to score the goal and that was the winning goal. If our girls didn’t play back to back or had longer to recover I think the score line would have been completely different but I was proud of the girls performance and attitude throughout the day.

Tuesday 7th November- U12 Girls Hockey Festival Truro School took two teams away to the Pool Hockey Festival this week, with both teams looking strong and hoping for good results. Our Maroon team did fantastically well based on some good attacking play practiced in training and managed to beat some very good quality opposition. The Navy Team went one- step further and managed to go undefeated throughout the whole tournament without conceding a goal! The intra-school game between Navy and Maroon was the highlight of the day with some enthusiastic attacking play by the Navy team coming up against the unbeatable force of M. Higgins on debut in goal for the Maroons. A tense finish with save after save from Higgins ended in the most exciting 0-0 draw between the teams and happy players all round. A special mention is reserved for L. Craze playing her first game for Truro and scoring some great goals, also L. Worrall for scoring a hat-trick! Miss Munn/Mr Ricketts

Wednesday 8th Nov- U16 Girls Hockey Regionals

Truro School U16 Girls travelled to Millfield for the Regional Championships on Tuesday 7th November. Although the Girls’ knew that they had a tough day ahead of them, spirits were high and this reflected in the first game with our girls quickly winning a short corner and M. Browne clinically converting to go 1-0 up. However, we struggled to get used to a very high quality – but bouncy – pitch and two quick mistakes were brutally punished with two goals. Heads dropped slightly and good hockey from Sherborne created two goals – the 4-1 final score line not at all reflecting a game in which we could – and maybe should – have got a result. In the other games, we were bullied off the ball and out of the game by a far larger and more physical Maynard’s team – losing 3-0, and blown away in the first half by a very strong Millfield team, eventually losing 7-0 despite a 2nd half rally. The girls played incredibly well and can certainly be proud of their efforts. Mrs Wyatt/Mr Ricketts Wednesday 8th Nov- U13 vs School- 2-1 win The girls played some fantastic hockey, they moved the ball well and had great movement of the ball which helped them attack forward. Truro had a number of opportunities at goal, but the oppositions keeper did extremely well to keep a number out. The defence were strong and powerful in the tackles but panicked when they released the ball so they often gave the ball back to the opposition. We had some lovely passages of play going forward but often released the ball too late. A few changes to the U13 game would of resulted in them winning quite comfortably but it was a well fought game from both sides, but luckily we managed to edge it slightly. Well Done Girls! Miss Manley

Wednesday 8th Nov- U15 vs Newquay Tretherras School- 3-2 win Playing on a completely different pitch to what the girls were used to, the girls had to change the way they play. It took a while for them to settle into the game but once Truro did they maintained possession and took control of the game. The girls made sure they upped the ball pace and moved to the ball, in order to attack forward and have a chance at getting some goals in. They had a number of short corners and shots at goal, but Tretherras had an outstanding keeper who kept them in the game. Truro did play some text book hockey, which was simple and effective and ensured they were going to score the goals and be comfortable in winning the game. The girls battled well and fought hard, the pitch definitely had an impact on there playing ability but they made sure they were going to come out with a win. Well Done Girls! Miss Manley

Thursday 9th November- U14 Girls Regionals The girls had an early start travelling to Clifton for the next stage of the competition, the regionals. Becoming runners up in it meant we were drawn into an extremely hard group. However the girls were prepared and organised and excited to get a high standard of hockey underway. The girls faced Clifton in their first game, Truro attacked the space well which gave them opportunities to get chances at goal but wasn’t successful in putting one away. The score line was 3-0 to Clifton but this certainly did not reflect the game, it was very equal however Clifton ensured they scored the chances they had. Playing Canford in the next game, the girls were nervous knowing Canford were under pressure to score a number of goals against us if they wanted to go through the group. Truro held the ball well and transferred the ball nicely all over the pitch, they maintained possession well but failed to attack forward, Canford pressurised well and caught us on the break on a number of occasions, ensuring they put the goals in the net, final score 4-0 to Canford. The final game was against Milfield, we ensured we played tactical for this game with simple but effective hockey. We had a number of chances going forward, but Millfield had extremely strong and powerful defenders who weren’t going to let anything past them. Truro defended extremely well, they battled hard and never gave up until the final whistle, final score 6-0 Millfield. I was extremely impressed and proud of the girls efforts and attitudes throughout the day, they are talented individuals and have a great team, with playing opposition of a higher standard it raised there playing level which was a good challenge for them. Well Done Girls! Miss Manley

Cross Country Success

On Sunday, Alexander, Benjy and Isaac competed in the Cornwall Cross Country Championships. Despite the heavy overnight rain, the course was not very muddy, but they did have to contend with gale force winds on this tough, hilly course. Alexander ran first in the Under 17 men’s race (5km) and had an excellent run in what is a very strong Cornish age group. Unfortunately, he only just missed out on the medals, coming in 4th, but he will be happy with his early season form. Performance of the day came from Benjy in the Under 15 boy’s race (4.5km). With 700m to go he was in second place and 50m behind, but showed great timing and determination to pull back the deficit and win his first county title by 30m. In doing so, he also beat some of the best runners from the south west. Isaac continues to improve, coming in 4th in the same race. Although also just outside the medals, this was a great result with him being a year young. Although awaiting confirmation, these performances should mean that all three will represent Cornwall in the South West Inter Counties Championships in January at Yeovil. They will be joined by Finn and Harris who have already been selected. Finn did not race on Sunday because on Saturday, he raced at Milton Keynes in the British Cross Challenge in the Under 17 men’s race. On a testing course he came 8th in a top-quality field featuring many internationals; a fine result at this stage of the season.

Netball Update

Under 19 County Netball Tournament Playing at Truro School there were only 5 teams in the County tournament this year. A round robin tournament was played and all 11 players took to the court. Wins were recorded against Penwith College (12-6), Budehaven School (8-5) and Truro High School (8-7). Truro College proved too strong with a 5-13 loss. Truro School held them in the first half, but too many unforced errors let the college pull away. This was enough for Truro School to be tournament runners up, joining the Under 16s with a place in the Regional Finals in Bournemouth in January.

SSP vs

Under 12 Won 20-3 After an unsettled start the Under 12 team captained by Emily Bailey won the fixture 20-3. Some accurate shooting from Meila – nominated player of the match – led to a convincing lead after three quarters, and was sustained in the final quarter. The team defended exceptionally well, picking up loose balls from passing errors. Good vision and space awareness meant that turnovers quickly arrived in the shooting circle. Quick passing and dynamic movement by Lola meant good shooting position could be obtained.

Under 13 Won 28-3

Under 14 Won 13-3 This was a great game for our defence they not only pressured the passes from the Pool attack but angled their bodies to enable them to make interceptions. E Nettleton,A Rawlinson,K Mantle and J Howard played as a unit and after the interceptions in the circle worked E Waterhouse who was playing centre for the first time getting the ball to the shooters. E Waterhouse had great vision passing to the shooters and always re offering for the next pass. Truro were victorious with the score line Pool 3 - Truro School 13

Under 16 Won 33-6 A thoroughly convincing win against Pool with the girls dominating all quarters. The second quarter highlighted this in particular with a scoreline of 10 goals to 1. Player of the match was Connie Hatcher.

Under 14 vs Newquay Tretherras Won 31-12 A physical game played outside in cool conditions. The Under 14s struggled to score during the first half of the game due to the sun steadily going down and good shooting position hard to find. As the ends changed, the bright sun was no longer an issue but a very wobbly post! Not put-off by the tricky conditions the team worked hard to support one another, making several interceptions and offering the shooters plenty of goal- scoring opportunities. In the second half, Truro School played some great netball, timing their moves to take the ball down the court quickly. Tight defence meant that Newquay did not score in the third quarter and despite some accurate shooting from the opposition in the final quarter Truro held onto their lead. Player of the Match: Sophie M

Under 16 vs Newquay Tretherras Won 22-20

A close fought game that was ultimately decided by a resounding scoreline in the third quarter. After a poor start, losing the first quarter by 6 goals to 2, a regroup and change of tactics for the second saw the deficit down to two. However, a dominant third quarter, outscoring their opponents by 11 goals to 2 sealed this victory and although Newquay responded well in the fourth, to narrow the gap, the girls did enough to hold on. Players of the match were Grace and Aerin .

Under 15 ISNC vs Wycliffe College Won 54-29 The Under 15s had a long journey up to Gloucester. After an excellent warm up they took to the court and played some determined netball. Wycliffe were not an easy team to play and the score does not reflect the difficulties that they encountered at times. Wycliffe never gave up and Truro would pull away, only for Wycliffe to up the intensity. A well deserved win, progressing through to the second round of this National competition. A great squad effort.
