Show Jumping Jess Howard (6AG) recently got the first double clear round of the day at a Pony club Team show jumping competition. Netball report We've had a busy week of netball this week. On Tuesday 30th January, all the girls from Year 4 headed off to Polwhele school for a match. The weather wasn't great but the girls’ spirits were high and they were all very keen to be playing their first netball match of the season. The girls all showed a wonderful display of netball. Elizabeth Hewlett and Farrah Ingham-Dewar were on fire with their shooting and Beth McIntosh and Harriet Smith played some fantastic netball in the centre third. Year 5 pupils become news Well done Year 4s. presenters for a day The Year 5 girls were all set to play the High Full Story ► School and Polwhele on Wednesday 31st January, but just as we were leaving, we received a call to say the game had been cancelled due to slippery courts at the High School. The girls were very disappointed as they were all looking forward to an afternoon of matches. We quickly contacted both schools and invited them to come to Truro Prep; Polwhele took up the offer. We had a great game; all the girls from Year 5 played some lovely netball. Anna and Alice Browning both played well , sharing the position of Centre with Celia Gill, making some fantastic interceptions at Goal Defence. A good start to the Netball Season Year 5s.     Blackwater Community Primary School Use and Impact of Sports Funding 2017/ 2018 PLEASE NOTE THAT WE ARE WAITING FOR DETAILS OF SPORTS FUNDING ALLOCATION 17 / 18 – Chris Wilson October 2017 Partnership Blackwater Community Primary School is one of 11 schools that form the Richard Lander Cluster. Meeting every half term we endeavour to share best practice and facilitate opportunities for KS1 and KS2 children to participate in competition and skills development. We also work closely with the Penair Cluster increasing sporting opportunities for children in the Truro area. Recently, Blackwater has seen increasing participation in competition, including entry into netball leagues, basketball and girl’s football competitions for the first time. We continue to participate in swimming galas, KS1 multi-skills and cross-country and various other competitions. Entry into all sports competitions and transport to and from venues is funded from Sports Premium Income.     Information Classification: PUBLIC Cornwall Schools’ Shared Designated Areas Background Cornwall Council has divided Cornwall into geographical areas called ‘designated areas’ which are each served by a specific school or schools. Designated areas assist the Council in ensuring there are enough school places and are also used to determine entitlement to school transport. Please note that the designated school for an address may not always be the one nearest to that address. All designated areas can be viewed online: http://www.cornwall.gov.uk/education-and- learning/schools-and-colleges/school-admissions/designated-areas/ Please be aware that not all schools include ‘living in the designated area’ as a priority in their oversubscription criteria (the criteria that will be used to decide who should be allocated places when there are more applications than places available). However, entitlement to transport to all schools is determined by Cornwall Council with regard to whether the school is in the designated area for a child’s home address or is their nearest school. In some towns in Cornwall, more than one school may be designated for an address. These are called 'shared designated areas'.     TRURO SCHOOL PUBLIC BENEFIT AND CHARITABLE ACTIVITY REPORT 2015-16 Objective 5 of Truro School’s Strategic Plan is: “To be celebrated as a socially and environmentally responsible member of the Cornish community.” This report outlines the range of activities undertaken by the school and its staff to support the local and wider community. Financial Support to families of Pupils at Truro School Truro School is committed to keeping its doors open to as many students as possible from the local community who will benefit from a Truro School education, regardless of the financial means of their parents. Scholarships (academic, sport, music, art, fencing, drama and chorister) are merit based but are small in value, usually 10%. However, bursaries are available which may provide financial support up to a maximum of 100%, dependent on the outcome of means-testing. Special emergency discretionary bursaries can also be awarded, usually for a limited time, when unforeseen financial difficulties arise for those parents whose children are currently in the School. These special bursaries are generally awarded for a key period of education such as completion of GCSEs or A Levels. When available, places are found in the boarding accommodation to overcome a domestic or family crisis. Funding for these bursaries comes from Truro School, the Truro School Foundation, Methodist Independent Schools Trust and some external Educational and Charitable Trusts. Benefits to Local Community The pupils' Community Service Scheme involves Truro School pupils helping with the elderly, young children at nurseries and in charity shops. The School Chaplain leads services throughout the county (including the Royal Cornwall Hospital) as a Minister of the Methodist Church and other staff are lay preachers in the community.

This is manifest in so many tangible ways and is a sign of a vibrant community. It is also a source of strength as a school to have deep historical roots which nourish our present and provide security for our future. For this I both thank you and encourage you to stay in touch. We would love to hear more from our recent leavers – especially news of their graduation and/or first jobs. The warmth and affection of the Truro School community was no more evident than in the number of tributes which flooded in following the passing of Watson Weeks, a former English and Drama teacher who inspired a whole generation of students. I had the pleasure of meeting Watson a few years ago at a reunion dinner when I witnessed the affection held for him by so many. I am very grateful to Guy Dodd for co-ordinating arrangements for a plaque in his memory to be placed in the Burrell Theatre sometime in the future. At Speech Day we said goodbye and thank you to Dave Hunt and Jane Rainbow, two teachers with nearly seventy years of inspirational service to Truro School between them. I so enjoyed last October’s London Reunion and the joyful and spirited ambiance created by our alumni who turned up in such great number.

In my other role, as a mentor to the Choristers, I hear these amazing musicians perform on an almost daily basis, but there was something utterly magical about hearing them in this spectacular setting. Following evensong, we had a short walk across the square to Juxon House for our drinks reception where we were able to mingle on a balcony overlooking St Paul’s itself. It was great to see both the rekindling of old friendships and the establishment of new connections between former pupils of a wide range of vintages.

    AQA GCSE INSET 2: Dynamics and force Venue: Richard Lander School Workshop Leader: Ben Lloyd-King (Richard Lander School) Following on from the successful launch at Truro School, the Cornwall Physics Education Partnership, supported by The Ogden Trust, held its second teacher workshop on 5 December at Richard Lander School, Truro. Delegates from five local schools attended – Camborne Science and International Academy, Falmouth School, Richard Lander School, Truro School and Wadebridge School. Led by Ben Lloyd-King (Physics teacher and greenpower car coordinator at Richard Lander) teachers tackled the required dynamics practical work from the new GCSE specifications. We have found it best to pair teachers from different schools to help provoke further discussion and sharing of ideas when testing out the practicals. It also helps to start attempting the practical with just a brief introduction from the workshop leader-- too much explanation beforehand can stifle the opportunity for the teachers to collaborate. The practicals on acceleration of trolleys, stretching of springs and measuring of density seemed simple enough, but the experience of trying to set them up showed the important thinking skills required. It was a challenging and enriching experience evaluating the practical arrangements and discussing how to improve the quality of data and create alternative arrangements. Replicating such discussions with pupils would be a very good way of ensuring pupils cover the whole range of Bloom’s taxonomy. The new GCSE theory papers will cover questions on the standard practicals, including methods of analysing results and ways of improving reliability, precision and accuracy of the recorded data. The workshop teachers began to troubleshoot the types of questions that might be asked.
