V ABSTRACT The purposeof this study was to determinehow far the women who served as Women Airforce ServicePilots (WASP) during World War IIwere able to push the parameters of the social, political and economic limits of American society. This work establishes that these women were extraordinary when comparedto their white, middle class peers and so were amongthe most likely of American women to both be willing and able to succeed at achieving their lifegoals, despite the society's limits on women. While traditional archivalsources such as governmentdocuments, contemporary newspapers and magazines were utilized, the primary source forthis study was the over 150 personal histories the author gathered fromWASP from 1996 to 2002. With these histories and other memoirs the author createdan extensive database that tracked the women fromtheir youth to the present. With this informationshe was able to determine both what the women wanted and what they did with theirlives. The limits they faced in reaching their goals and what they did to overcome those limits reveals a great deal about Americansociety and its behavior toward women. The women of the WASP worked together to achieve their goal of continuing to fly afterthe War. While a number of them made a career out of flying, many more found other career paths rather than continuing to work in the expensive and male dominated world of aviation. Regardless,these women as a groupcontinued to be ahead of their peers whether in their careers,their returnto workafter having children, or their determination to lead their lives on their own terms. The WASP provide anexample of how farAmerican women of their age cohort were able to push the limits of American society. Eisenhower Library While the 1940s may conjure up images of "Rosie the Riveter" and women growing produce in their Victory Gardens on the homefront, the 1950s may be characterized as the era of June Cleaver and Harriet Nelson--women comfortable in the roles of mother and wife in the suburban neighborhoods of that era. The public statements concerning women's issues made by President Dwight D. Eisenhower show him to be a paradox: "...we look to the women of our land to start education properly among all our citizens. We look to them, I think, as the very foundation--the greatest workmen in the field of spiritual development...We have come a long ways in recognizing the equality of women. Unfortunately, in some respects, it is not yet complete. But I firmly believe it will soon be so." She later broke an existing altitude record by ying a biplane to 33,000 feet in the air. Appendices …………………………………………………………….……………………45 2 I: Abstract Women have been flying since 1910, and since that time, they have faced discrimination.1 During World War II, women pilots were utilized for the first time by the government for the war effort. This paper will argue that early women “aviatrixes”, a female pilot/aviator, were able to set the stage for the Women Airforce Service Pilots of World War II. It also will argue that in order for women to become military pilots, they had to overcome adversity in many forms, including denial of light instruction, lack of access to jobs, low pay, onerous and often dangerous assignments. They had the misfortune of facing disparaging public opinion in mid-1944, which led to their military deactivation. Women aviators were able to overcome the gender stereotypes in early aviation, and because of their success, women were able to fly every type of plane the Army Air Force (AAF) had in their arsenal the second world war.
