Stranded by the weather, short on cash, and C H A P TER 11 unable to communicate with the locals, the poet turned inward, writing a series of auto biographical blank verse fragments meditating on his childhood that would become part one of the 1799 Prelude, as well as nearly a dozen poems that would appear in the second volume of the 1800 edition of Lyrical Ballads. Coleridge This paper intends to examine the travel writings of a few late eighteenth-century travellers to northern Europe, with a closer look at those of Mary Wollstonecraft and S.T. Coleridge who journeyed to Germany and Scandinavia at the end of the eighteenth century (1795 and 1798) as the routes to France and Italy were made increasingly perilous. Mary Wollstonecraft’s public letters to her lover Imlay recounting her 1795 journey were well known even in her own days; less so, the narrative of Samuel Taylor Coleridge who travelled with William and Dorothy Wordsworth to Germany three years later, in September 1798. One simple reason for that: Coleridge’s travel account was not published following his journey as it would be expected from a travel writer. Coleridge recorded his travel experience in a notebook and a very large journal, extracts of which he then used in his letters to Tom Poole and Sara, his wife. His journal, unpublished and currently held in the Berg Collection at the New York Public Library, is composed of a travelogue recounting his sea journey from Yarmouth to Hamburg and ten letters to Tom Poole and Sara Coleridge, written from September 18, 1798 to May 17, 1799. -

From The Coleridge Bulletin The Journal of the Friends of Coleridge New Series 23 (NS) Spring 2004 © 2004 Contributor all rights reserved http://www.friendsofcoleridge.com/Coleridge-Bulletin.htm Scarcity by Gift: Horizons of The “Lucy” Poems 1 Peter Larkin ____________________________________________________________________________________________ eoffrey Hartman, who has often returned to the “Lucy” poems to take Gfurther soundings of Wordsworth and of the work of reading generally, characterises the cycle as “a group of short lyrics on the death of a young girl… [evoking] three highly charged themes: incompleteness, mourning, and memory”.2 While I can’t offer an entirely fresh reading of these minutely studied poems, it may be worthwhile to reflect upon them (and on Hartman’s readings of them in particular) in the light of this “incompleteness” considered as an horizon for both loss and dedication. This broader ramification of incompleteness (which of course equally invokes mourning and memory) may also lie on the cusp of literary and theological approaches to these elusively minimal poems. The incompleteness I focus on is not confined to Lucy’s premature death, but is one which touches the theme of a “relation of scarcity” within the juncture of human and natural life which I have explored elsewhere in relation to The Ruined Cottage, a text completed earlier in the same year (1798) in which Wordsworth embarked on the first of what we now know as the “Lucy” poems.3 Several critics note both a connection with and a shift between the earlier social narrative and the later elegiac lyrics. James Averill points out how Wordsworth’s suspicions of “the moving accident” leads him to assume an outright elegiac voice in the Goslar lyrics, a voice suspended between narrative and lyric, not telling a full story but evoking incidents underwritten by the event of a death.4 Spencer Hall finds the “resignation, acceptance, and even awe at the processes of the universe” which The Ruined Cottage had evinced “ultimately joyless”. -

Wordsworth's Moonlight-Poetry and the Sense of thecc Uncanny" BRIAN COSGROVE I c V_voNSPicuous AMONG THOSE who have emphasized in Words• worth the tension between Nature and Imagination is Geoffrey Hartman, who has argued that one habitual Wordsworthian response is to shy away from "an 'apocalyptic' position" since "he does not want to find imagination in violation of man or nature." Wordsworth's hope, then, is "that the imagination can be domes• ticated, that nature can satisfy a mind which seeks, or used to seek, the supernatural."1 The attraction of Wordsworth to the supernatural is, nonethe• less, potent in an early phase of his career; and there are a number of texts from the Alfoxden period (1798) which reveal not simply this attraction, but the ambivalence of feeling aroused by it. Since, however, Wordsworth's supernatural is deliberately muted by his strong grasp of the actual, we need a more accept• able term to describe a poetry which mediates between the extremes of natural and supernatural. I would propose, for con• venience, that we speak of Wordsworth's poetry of the preter• natural ; and I would argue further that this preternatural quality is most frequently evidenced in a consistent imagery of moon• light.2 Nathaniel Hawthorne, in a famous passage in The Scarlet Letter, may help us further to define the quality of this poetry of the preternatural which exists in an intermediary moonlit world. In the preamble of "The Custom-House," Hawthorne presents himself seated in a moonlit parlour, "striving to picture imagi• nary scenes. ..."
