  • Theravada Practices and Religious Life in Kelantan1
Volume 1, Number 1, 2006 BUDDHISM IN A MUSLIM STATE: THERAVADA PRACTICES AND RELIGIOUS LIFE IN KELANTAN1 Mohamed Yusoff Ismail School of Social, Development and Environment Studies Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia Abstract Although Kelantan is noted for its orthodoxy, in particular with regard to national politics and local practices of Islam, Theravada Buddhism seems to thrive very well among the local Thai ethnic group. This is testified by the fact that there are twenty temples in the state with a full-fledged Sangha organization, whose monks also serve in major towns outside the state. This paper describes some aspects of Theravada religious life in the Malay Muslim state of Kelantan, located south of Thai-Malaysian border in the east coast of the Malay Peninsula. The main concern of this paper is to examine how Thai Theravada Buddhism places itself in the context of a predominantly Malay society and adapts to local social and cultural conditions. The paper will give particular attention to the sociological and anthropological factors contributing to the non-antagonistic nature of relationship between Buddhism and Islam. Part of the answer can be traced to the historical origin of Buddhist temples in the area and also from the adaptive mechanism Theravada Buddhism has made in order to accommodate itself to the demand of the larger society in which the Thais are a minority group. In terms of its ecclesiastical organization, the Sangha body of Kelantan maintains a close link with the Thai clergy, the latter being the source of religious reference and validation.

  • DOSM: 17.7 Mil Malaysians Have Completed Census 2020 BACHOK
DOSM: 17.7 mil Malaysians have completed Census 2020 BACHOK (May 4): A total of 17.7 million out of 32.7 million Malaysians have completed the Malaysia Population and Housing Census 2020 (Census 2020) as of yesterday. Deputy chief statistician (Social and Technical Development programme) Nazaria Baharudin said the number represented 50% of the total number of people in the country who have completed the census. "A total of 17.7 million or 54% of the country's 32.7 million population have had the census done. The remaining 50% of the population will (have it completed) by the end of June but if there are remaining unresolved issues, all will be done by July. "It is important for the government to conduct the Census 2020, in order for it to plan the necessary facilities such as health facilities for the elderly, and schools and nurseries needed for the next nine years. Those who refuse to register (and conduct the census) will be the (eventual) losers as it will make it difficult for the government to plan and implement the necessary development projects every year." Nazaria said this to reporters at the Department of Statistics Malaysia's (DOSM) field trip programme in Kampung Balai, Tawang here today. Also present at the event was Kelantan DOSM director Zuraidy Zainal Abidin. Commenting on the Census 2020 in Kelantan, Nazaria said they received very good cooperation from the people, adding that 1.4 million out of 1.9 million Kelantanese having fullfilled their responsibilities. "We have covered 419,000 households and areas such as the Lojing subdistrict, and the districts of Jeli, Tanah Merah, Tumpat, Pasir Puteh and Machang have completed the census process.

  • Warisan Budaya Tidak Ketara Komuniti Cina Peranakan Kelantan: Kajian Kes Upacara Koi Hoi Di Kampung Pasir Parit Abstrak ___

  • International Journal of Multicultural and Multireligious Understanding (IJMMU) Vol
Comparative Study of Post-Marriage Nationality Of Women in Legal Systems of Different Countries http://ijmmu.com [email protected] International Journal of Multicultural ISSN 2364-5369 Volume 2, Issue 1 and Multireligious Understanding February, 2015 Pages: 1-17 Evolution and Identity of the Kelantan Peranakan Chinese: Issues and Challenges Mohd Shahrul Imran*; Lim Abdullah; Reevany Bustami1 1 Centre for Policy Research and International Studies, Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), Malaysia E-mail: [email protected] Abstract The Kelantan Peranakan Chinese (KPC) has become the earliest evidence of China relationship with the Malay World. The fifty or so Peranakan settlements in Kelantan were believed to have been founded sometime before the 1800s starting from Tumpat to Gua Musang and along Sungai Kelantan. The descendants of those early Chinese settlers married local women and had close contacts with the Malays and Thais who formed the majority of the populace. This eventually led to the acculturation of the Chinese and gave rise to the formation of the Peranakan community. He is ethnically Chinese but his Kelantanese dialect is so homey that he could easily pass off as Malay. The Chinese perceived the local Malays as legitimately dominant and themselves as legitimately subordinate. This understanding and acceptance of the legitimacy of their relative positions is very crucial in the promotion of a successful inter-ethnic interaction. Today, the days of the Peranakan are numbered and the size of their community is rapidly declining. Modernisation, migration and marriage with non-Peranakans are among the main reasons for the decline. But perhaps the most significant factor is the need to re-orient their identities to suit the post-colonial racial landscape with its ethnic demarcations of Malay, Chinese, Indian and others categories.

Kajian Malaysia, Vol. 35, Supp. 1, 2017, 141–163 ENGAGEMENT OF UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS AS CUSTODIANS IN HERITAGE CONSERVATION ENRICHMENT Pue Giok Hun Institute of Ethnic Studies (KITA), Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, MALAYSIA E-mail: [email protected] Published online: 29 December 2017 To cite this article: Pue, G. H. 2017. Engagement of undergraduate students as custodians in heritage conservation enrichment. Kajian Malaysia 35(Supp.1): 141–163. https://doi.org/10.21315/ km2017.35.Supp.1.8 To link to this article: https://doi.org/10.21315/km2017.35.Supp.1.8 ABSTRACT In 2005, National Heritage Act was enacted by the Government of Malaysia as an effort to protect and preserve tangible and intangible cultural heritage in the country. Despite its significance and well intentions, the Act remains weak and limited in terms of its definition, scope, implementation and awareness. This, in particular, becomes problematic when it comes to intangible cultural heritage (ICH) as it is living and continuously evolving. The increasingly rapid globalisation at the end of the 20th century causes more communities to become susceptible to frequent changes. In addition, Malaysian studies itself is still in the early phase of forming and building the breadth and depth of local knowledge of the country and its society. One particular aspect of concern is knowledge about minority ethnic groups with the potentials to be considered as regional heritage such as the various Peranakan communities in Malaysia. Hence, it is a race against time to have the communities' rich and invaluable culture documented for future preservation and conservation. Against this background, the present article explores theses as a potential viable source of knowledge on a minority ethnic community in Malaysia with a focus on Peranakan Chinese in Kelantan.
