In an alternate universe, Star Wars was only a modest success. After Splinter of the Minds Eye marketing bonanza, the film eked out a bit Splinter of the Minds Eye its budget at the box office. In this alternateGeorge Lucas scrapped the nascent plans that became The Empire Strikes Back and took the action from desert planets and jungle worlds and onto the fog-enshrouded world of Mimban, where Han and Chewie were long gone and Luke and Leia were well on their way to romance. Released inthe novel picked up where A New Hope left off: It sees Luke, Leia, and the droids stranded on Mimban, a dark, foggy mining world that contains a powerful crystal also sought by the Empire. Vader shows up, and there's a thrilling finale fight before Luke and Leia are able to escape that world. The genesis of the novel came before Star Wars was released. Alan Dean Foster had been contracted to ghostwrite the novel Star Wars: From the Adventures of Luke Skywalker, which was based on the screenplay of the first film. But the book contract stipulated that two novels be written: one an adaptation of the first film in advance of its release, and the other a backdoor sequel that Lucas could use as a backup second film. It really cuts down on the need for expensive backdrops. At the time the first novel was released, Harrison Ford had not signed on to star in any subsequent movies. Lucas stipulated that Han Solo, thus, couldn't be in the sequel as well, which is why Foster says he also wrote out Splinter of the Minds Eye. The two are only mentioned in passing in the novel. And Vader himself isn't as omnipresent as in the first film, only becoming integral to the story at the end—after all, every action movie needs its thrilling finale. But of course, this theoretical timeline ends in Lucas simply didn't need to have a low-budget sequel when he could instead realize the story he'd been plotting out in his head. I mean, that was the idea going in. It's always nice to have a backup, Splinter of the Minds Eye you don't always have to use your backup. Subsequent Star Wars novels like Brian Daley's Han Solo trilogy were meant to sate rabid fans rather than serve as crypto-sequel fodder. Neil Smith were about it for an expanded universe outside of film Splinter of the Minds Eye TV. As the Star Wars universe expanded post-Zahn, Splinter became even more of a mere curiosity, since its romantic undertones between Luke and Leia might make it a bit jarring after the sibling reveal in Return of the Jedi. But in another time and place, he kicked off a modest franchise, perhaps the first movie in a series of sequels to an ambitious but only modestly successful film. Splinter of the Mind's Eye was the first Star Wars novel with an original storyline to Splinter of the Minds Eye published after the release of the original film, and is thus considered, alongside the Star Wars newspaper comic strip and Marvel's comic seriesto mark the beginning of the Star Wars Expanded Universe. The story focuses on Luke Skywalker and Princess Leiawho are marooned together on the world of Mimban, where they encounter the locals and struggle against the forces of the evil Galactic Empireincluding Darth Vader. Foster's decision to place his story on a misty jungle planet was also intended to reduce set and background costs for a film adaptation. Han Solo and Chewbacca were also left out as Harrison Ford had not signed a contract to film any of the sequels at the time of the novel contract. A strange energy storm forces them to crash land on the swampy Circarpous V, known to the locals as Mimban. They begin looking for a space port to get off the planet but instead find a town, near which agents of the Empire have an energy mine—the cause of the crash. Forced to keep their identities secret, Luke and Leia take refuge in a nearby bar. An old woman named Halla approaches them, identifies Luke as strong with the Forceand shows him a splinter of what she claims to be the Kaiburr crystal, [b] which focuses the Force. Halla strikes a deal with Luke and Leia to help her find the whole crystal, and in return she will help them get off the planet. A squabble between Luke and Leia attracts the attention of miners emerging from the pub, who claim that fighting in public is against Imperial law; they all get into a brawl. Imperial stormtroopers intervene and incarcerate Luke and Leia. They are questioned by Imperial Captain-Supervisor Grammel, who confiscates the crystal shard along with Luke's weapons. Luke and Leia are placed in a maximum-security cell with two drunk but friendly Yuzzemhairy creatures called Hin and Kee. Grammel reports the incident and gives the crystal shard to the Imperial governor of the star system. Halla uses the Force to help Luke, Leia and the two Yuzzem. The Yuzzem rampage through the jail, while Luke and Leia escape. The four meet Halla and the droids to find the Temple of Pomojema, which Halla believes to be the location of the Kaiburr crystal. They travel through the swampy wilds of Mimban, during Splinter of the Minds Eye they encounter a wandrellaa huge worm-like creature, which pursues them and separates Luke and Leia from the others. Luke and Leia hide in a well, down which the wandrella falls, leaving the two trapped. From the lip of the well, Halla suggests that there must be an escape route underground, at the end of which Halla and the others will rejoin them. Luke and Leia journey underground, floating across a lake on Splinter of the Minds Eye pads, and fend off sea creatures. On Splinter of the Minds Eye other side of the lake, they encounter the secretive residents of the caves, the Cowaywho have captured Halla, the droids and the Yuzzem. To save his friends, Luke defeats the Coway's champion fighter and thus impresses the tribe. When the Imperials arrive, they are surprised by the Coway tribe's resistance in battle. Vader and Grammel retreat with the handful of surviving stormtroopers, though Vader loses patience with Grammel for the defeat and kills him. Luke and company steal a recently abandoned Imperial transport, and travel to the temple, where they find the Kaiburr crystal. They encounter a monster and unsuccessfully try to fight it off with blasters. Luke cuts down one of the pillars holding up the temple, crushing the monster, but Luke's leg is pinned under a boulder. Vader then enters the temple, announcing that he killed Hin and Kee. Leia takes up Luke's lightsaber and begins fighting Vader, who gives her multiple superficial burns with his own saber. Hin, mortally wounded, shows up and lifts the rock off of Luke before perishing. Luke then duels Vader, deflecting some Force-based attacks and eventually slicing off Vader's arm. Despite this, the Sith lord seems about to win, but then falls into a pit. Luke senses that this is not Splinter of the Minds Eye end of Vader. He and Leia, healed by the crystal, drive off with Halla into the mists of Mimban.
