PIEHLER: And, I guess, I’d first like to ask you a very basic question: where were you born and when were you born? RAY HIGGINS: I was born at Woodbury, Tennessee, June 18, nineteen and twenty-one. PIEHLER: And your ... parents were married in Woodbury, Tennessee? HIGGINS: Yes, yes they were married in Woodbury. She was from McMinnville, and he’s from Woodbury. PIEHLER: Do you know how your parents met? HIGGINS: Uh, they were neighbors. Uh, this is where I ad lib a little bit and tell you a little more than answering the question. PIEHLER: Please do. HIGGINS: Okay. My mother lost her husband to appendicitis. His name was Jesse Moore. And she had three children. And she lived near ... my father, uh, who was married and lost his wife with four children. Well all, putting them together automatically they had seven children, you see. (Laughter) Well, the grandparents on both sides ... felt sorry for them, I think, having that many children. So the maternal grandfather took ... our mother’s oldest daughter and, for all practical purposes, reared her as their own. -

HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION 1221 By Maggart A RESOLUTION to honor and commend Harold Ray Bradley upon being inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame. WHEREAS, the members of this General Assembly are proud to formally recognize those talented musicians whose influence on and participation in a genre of music is of great import and whose talent has set them apart as the finest of American artists; and WHEREAS, veteran guitarist Harold Ray Bradley is one such musician who is widely renowned for his prolific recordings, studio achievements, and industry leadership; and WHEREAS, in recognition of the impact he has had on the genre of country music, Harold Bradley was formally inducted into the prestigious Country Music Hall of Fame by the Country Music Association in 2006; and WHEREAS, born on January 2, 1926, in Nashville, Harold Bradley first took an interest in the banjo, but his brother, the late Owen Bradley, steered him toward guitar; by 1943, Harold Bradley was playing amplified jazz guitar and acquired his first job playing lead guitar with Ernest Tubb’s Texas Troubadours; and WHEREAS, from 1944 to 1946, he proudly served his country as a member of the United States Navy during World War II; he then headed home to Nashville to study music; and WHEREAS, Mr. Bradley’s first country recording session came in 1946, when he recorded with Pee Wee King’s Golden West Cowboys in Chicago; his acoustic rhythm guitar opened Red Foley’s 1950 smash hit “Chattanoogie Shoe Shine Boy,” which jumped to number one on both the country and pop charts; and WHEREAS, though a capable lead guitarist, Harold Bradley’s studio specialty has been rhythm work; on many sessions he lent his musical talents to a studio-triumvirate with lead specialists Hank Garland and Grady Martin; and HJR1221 01147350 -1- WHEREAS, Mr. -

In the early months of 1964, on their inaugural tour of North America, the Beatles seemed to be everywhere: appearing on The Ed Sullivan Show, making the front cover of Newsweek, and playing for fanatical crowds at sold out concerts in Washington, D.C. and New York City. On Billboard magazine’s April 4, 1964, Hot 100 2 list, the “Fab Four” held the top five positions. 28 One notch down at Number 6 was “Suspicion,” 29 by a virtually unknown singer from Amarillo, Texas, named Terry Stafford. The following week “Suspicion” – a song that sounded suspiciously like Elvis Presley using an alias – moved up to Number 3, wedged in between the Beatles’ “Twist and Shout” and “She Loves You.”3 The saga of how a Texas boy met the British Invasion head-on, achieving almost overnight success and a Top-10 hit, is one of triumph and “Amarillo By Morning” disappointment, a reminder of the vagaries The Life and Songs of Terry Stafford 1 that are a fact of life when pursuing a career in Joe W. VI. THE STEREO ERA In 1954, a timid and uncertain record industry took the plunge to begin investing heav- ily in stereophonic sound. They were not timid and uncertain because they didn’t know if their system would work – as we have seen, they had already been experimenting with and working the kinks out of stereo sound since 1932 – but because they still weren’t sure how to make a home entertainment system that could play a stereo record. Nevertheless, they all had their various equipment in place, and so that year they began tentatively to make recordings using the new medium. RCA started, gingerly, with “alternate” stereo tapes of monophonic recording sessions. Unfortunately, since they were still uncertain how the results would sound on home audio, they often didn’t mark and/or didn’t file the alternate stereo takes properly. As a result, the stereo versions of Charles Munch’s first stereo recordings – Berlioz’ “Roméo et Juliette” and “Symphonie Fanastique” – disappeared while others, such as Fritz Reiner’s first stereo re- cordings (Strauss’ “Also Sprach Zarathustra” and the Brahms Piano Concerto No. 1 with Ar- thur Rubinstein) disappeared for 20 years. Oddly enough, their prize possession, Toscanini, was not recorded in stereo until his very last NBC Symphony performance, at which he suf- fered a mental lapse while conducting. None of the performances captured on that date were even worth preserving, let alone issuing, and so posterity lost an opportunity to hear his last half-season with NBC in the excellent sound his artistry deserved. Columbia was even less willing to pursue stereo. -

Today’s guest, producer extraordinaire Dave Cobb. DAVE COBB When we approach these records we approach it much the way a record would’ve been done in 1965, 1970. And it’s humans playing together. There are mistakes all over the record. There’s timing issues, there’s tuning issues, there’s pitch issues, there’s flubs of words. The same way people are seeking out organically grown food, I think people are seeking out organically grown music at the same time. The moment I heard Chris Stapleton I was like, “Man I’ve got to track him down.” If I can just get to Nashville I’d run into him and I’d run into Jason Isbell and try to sucker them in to make records. I like to fly by the seat of my pants. Walk in and see what’s going to grab you that day. To me it was a really cool thing about linking really great artists that I like now, and linking Nashville, what Nashville is today. Taking kind of a snapshot of it. And I love it when I get to introduce somebody to somebody else I think is talented. And you see there eyes both sparkle. And I love the unity in the scene. That’s why I moved here. Provenance and Acquisition Information: This collection was donated by Alan Mayor’s sister, Theresa Mayor Smith, in October 2017. The Center’s Director and Archivist picked up a portion of the collection on October 6, 2017 from Mrs. Smith’s storage unit in Cadiz, Kentucky. The second, and largest, portion was picked up by the Center’s Archivist and Assistant Archivist on October 13, 2017 from Cadiz, Kentucky. The third batch of remanding binders of negatives was dropped off at the Center by Mrs. Smith on November 9, 2017.
