NATIONWIDE TOUR STORYLINES – Week of Feb. 27th PANAMA CLARO CHAMPIONSHIP March 1-4 Club de Golf de Panama, Panama City, Panama Purse: $550,000 First Prize: $99,000 2011 Champion: Mathew Goggin 132 players (including top four 2011 Tour de las Americas money leaders) 2nd of 27 events TOUR’S LATIN AMERICA SEASON LAUNCH HEADS TO PANAMA – The Nationwide Tour continues its season launch in Latin America this week with the Panama Claro Championship. This will be the Tour‟s ninth straight trip to Panama Golf Club in Panama City. As last year‟s season-opening event, Mathew Goggin initiated his return to the PGA TOUR at season‟s end with a two-stroke victory in Panama. The Pacific Rubiales Colombia Championship in Bogotá kicked off the season on Feb. 16th. Next week the Tour travels deep into South America to Santiago, Chile for the first time. JUMPING TOURS – Three players who finished 30th or better in last week‟s Mayakoba Golf Classic on the PGA TOUR are scheduled to be in Panama this week – Mark Anderson (T16), Marc Turnesa (T16) and Billy Horschel (T30). Skip Kendall, who won the Nationwide Tour season-opener in Bogotá, Colombia on Feb. 19th and finished T49 at Mayakoba in Mexico, is also in the Panama Claro Championship field. YOUNGSTERS – Youth will once again be served on the Nationwide Tour in 2012. At 21 (turns 22 on August 21), South Korea‟s Bio Kim is the Tour‟s youngest member, followed by a trio of 22-year-olds in Tom Hoge (May 25), Johnny Delprete (May 12) and Russell Henley (April 12). Last year, Danny Lee was the Tour‟s second youngest player at the start of the year (then 20) and earned his 2012 PGA TOUR card at season‟s end. HUB INTERNATIONAL BECOMES PRESENTING SPONSOR AT SOBOBA SPRINGS – With the naming of a presenting sponsor, Hub International, the Nationwide Tour‟s Southern California stop has a new name. The “Soboba Golf Classic presented by HUB International” will be played April 2-8 at The Country Club at Soboba Springs. HUB International is a global insurance organization, based in Chicago, Ill. The Classic has new early April dates (5th – 8th), after playing in the fall its first three years. A FIRST FOR ST. JOHN’S U. – “Storylines” failed to share with its readers last week an interesting item on one former and one current Nationwide Tour member. Former St. John‟s University star golfers Keegan Bradley and Andrew Svoboda both finished runner-up on their respective tours two weeks ago – Bradley at the PGA TOUR‟s Northern Trust Open and Svoboda at the Pacific Rubiales Colombia Championship, a Nationwide Tour career best. The duo ranks 1-2 in individual college titles won while at St. John‟s, with Svoboda owning 13 to Bradley‟s nine. PAST CHAMPIONS – Also in Panama will be Scott Dunlap, Vance Veazey and Fran Quinn, winners of the 2008-„09-„10 tournaments, respectively. Sandwiched around their wins are 2007 and last year‟s champions Miguel Angel Carballo and Mathew Goggin, both of whom played their way onto the PGA TOUR this year via “The 25” on the Nationwide Tour last year. KEY STATS – The following are some key stats about the Nationwide Tour that have been compiled since the Tour‟s inception in 1990. 1,268 names appear on the Nationwide Tour‟s All-Time Alumni Roster 652 events have been played (including 2012 season opener in Bogotá) 372 different tournament winners of Nationwide Tour events 358 players have earned PGA TOUR cards via the Nationwide Tour 326 Tour alumni have won events on the PGA TOUR $75.3 million has been donated to charity by Nationwide Tour events 245,000 volunteers (approximate figure) have contributed time to tournaments DID YOU KNOW? – Professional golf has a rich history at host Panama Golf Club that dates back to the 1950s and 60s when the likes of Arnold Palmer, Sam Snead, George Bayer, Doug Sanders, Roberto De Vicenzo, Doug Ford, Julius Boros and Dow Finsterwald, among others, competed in unofficial “winter tour” events at the club. Palmer defeated Snead in a six-hole playoff to win the 1956 Panama Open a year after he turned professional.
