Deep In south central Kentucky on a hilltop visible for miles, stands Western

Kentucky State College, home of the Western Kentucky Hilltopper football team.

College Heights is nationally recognized as one of the nation's most beautiful campuses. It embraces an area of some 70 acres on which twenty-six college build­

Ings are located, occupies an eminence overlooking the city of Bowling Green and commands one of the most beautiful panoramic views to be found.

Founded in 1906 by Dr. H. H. Cherry, one of Kentucky's most famous educ­ ators, Western Kentucky State College as a co-educational college with an enrol­ lment of better than 2500 students has become one of Kentucky's foremost institu­ tions of higher education.

A complete program offering courses in twenty-three different departments provides diversified educational opportlmities. The Master of Arts, the Bachelor of Science and the Bachelor of Arts degrees are offered. Pre-professional work leading to entrance in professional and technical colleges for advanced study is also offered.

Western Kentucky's faculty of 110 members has been trained in America's finest colleges and universities. Classrooms, laboratories, shops, farm areas and equipment are modern and sufficient to assure the student the highest type of instructional facilities.

In addition to football, Western Kentucky has intercollegiate athletic teams in basketball, baseball, track, tennis and golf. A full schedule of Intercollegiate contests is played In each of these sports. The college is a member of the Ohio

NICK DENES

Coach Nick Denes opens his third season as head coach of the Western Kentucky

State College football team on September 1, 1959, when the H!lltoppers open prac­ tice for the new campaign,

HIs first year at Western, Denes closed the season with 5 wins, 310sses and one tie. Last season he ended with four wins and five losses while conducting a youth movemem on the Hilltop. Four of the losses were by such narrow margins that a break or two at crucial points could easily have turned the defeats into victories.

The modest, unassuming Denes holds a win -loss record in athletics which is fab­ ulous. His overall record is 431 victories, 114 losses and 8 ties. In football his teams have won 148, lost 40, and tied 8.

In basketball the record reads 162 wins and 48 losses. In track his teams won

108andlost 22. As Western's baseball coach last season, Denes had an impressive

13-win, 4-10ss record.

His highly successful coaching career began at Corbin, Ky., High School in 1929, following graduation from the University of Illinois . The veteran Denes is the only high school coach in Kentucky to ever win state championships in three sports.

He coached his 1936 Corbin basketball team to the state title. In 1951 he direc­ ted his Louisville Male High School football team to the state championship and

Denes was named Kentucky's "Coach of the Year" for 1951. While at Male, Coach

Denes' track teams won seven state crowns, five in a row.

In 1939 the likable. story-telling Denes came to Western Kemucky as an assis­ tant coach.

Coach Denes moved to Male in 1940 as an assistant coach. He handled the line ontwo state championship teams before he took over as head coach in 1949 to com­ pile one of the most brilliant coaching records in the history of ' athletics at the Lou­ isville school.

A warm. friendly person, Coach Denes is a firm believer in strict discipline and hard work. His teams are always superbly conditioned.

TURNER ELROD

Elrod played football, basketball ,,!,d baseball at Western Kentucky from 1927 through 1930. He coached high school athletics in Kentucky following his gradua­ tion in 1931. Prior to joining the Hilltopper coaching staff at the opening of the

1949 season, Elrod was athletic director and assistant football coach at Barrett high school, Henderson, Kentucky. He served in the United States Army from

1942 through 1946.

Elrod also coaches the Hilltopper track team in the spring sports program.

FRANK GRIFFIN

Griffin played end for the Hilltoppers before World War II. He served in the

U.S. Navy from 1941 through 1946. Upon being discharged, he joined the Hill­ topper staff as trainer. He moved up as an assistant coach in the spring of 1948, handling the line.

Griffin also coaches the Hilltopper golf team each year which is a highly-rated contender for the Ohio Valley Conference Championship.

JIMMIE FEIX

Feix, Little All-American quarterback at Western Kentucky in 1952, joined the Hilltopper coaching staff as a full-time assistant last year. He was a student assistant for a year while completing work forthe M. A. degree which he received in August, 1958.

Feixgainednational recognition for his quarterbacking of Western Kentucky's

Refrigerator Bowl champions in 1952. He ranked among the top passers in the nation during his junior and senior years with the Hilltoppers.

In June, 1953, he was graduated from Western Kentucky with the B. S. degree in physical education. He entered the U. S. Air Force shortly after graduation as an ROTC-graduate lieutenant, serving as a flyer until his release in March, 1957.

11 western kentucky HILL TOPPERS DENNY WEDGE - Wedge took over as the Hilltopper's starting quarterback last

season, and is In line to hold down the same post this season. A 6-1, 175-pound,

20-year-old senior from Point Pleasant, W. Va. , Wedge is a top flight punter as

well as a fine passer. More than once during the past two seasons Wedge has

provided the difference between victory and defeat for the Hilltoppers with his

high, spiraling kicks which moved his team out of dangerous spots. On his 48

punts last season, Wedge kicked 1,699 yards for an average of 35 . 4 yards per

punt.

BILL PEGAUSCH - Pegausch, a speedy halfback from Skikie, ill. , is sure to aid

the Western Kentucky backfield this season. The 5-6, ISO-pound junior is a wel-

come sight to backfield coach Turner Elrod. Pegausch last season scored nine

points ..uter-touchdown and one field goal.

JERRY WILDER - Wilder, a junior end from Owensboro, will add strength at the flanks this year for Western Kentucky. He is 20 years old, stands 6-1 and weighs

195 pounds.

MORRIS LONGACRE - Longacre shows promise as a strong guard for Coach Frank

Griffin's line. The 20-year-old, 6-foot junior is from Southern High School in

Louisville.

BILL MEADORS - Meadors proved himself a spirited aggressive guard last year and as a freshman in 1957. He is a 5-8, 20-year-old junior from Corbin, Ky., weighing 185 pounds.

RONNIE SHEFFER - Sheffer, a six-foot, 175-pound senior, is a threat for start-

Ing quarterback following his outstanding showing last season and during spring

practice this year. He is from Henderson, Kentucky, quarterbacking Coach Don

Shelton's 1955 squad to an undefeated championship season. He is 20 years old. 12 TED HARTIJNG - Hartung, a 6-foot, 22-year-old, 205 pound guard from Norfolk,

Va. , could be valuable to Western this season. Ted received valuable experience last fall with Western.

RON DOWNARD - Downard was one of Western's few freshmen to earn a varsity

letter in 1957. The six-foot, 195 pound, 20-year-old junior from Newport, Ky.,

is important to Western's center IX>sition.

MELVIN VOGEL - Vogel is a product of Valley High School of Louisville, Ky . , where he played for Western grad, Dallas Arnold. The junior is expected to provide the size and driving power to make Coach Turner Elrod's backfield one of the most powerful in the league. Vogel is 21-years-old, 180 pounds, and stands

six feet tall.

JOE JAGGERS - Jaggers, a star at Caldwell County High School, Princeton, Ky., is expected to strengthen Western's team this year. The l70-pound freshman halfback is 5-11, weighs 170 and is 19 years old.

BILL BOOKER - Booker is a 19-year-old sophomore from Franklin, Ky. The

5-10, 180 pound fullback is a prospect for the Western backfield.

KEEN JOHNSON - Johnson is a 19-year-old freshman from Mt. Sterling, Ky. He

is expected to go as an end for Western this year. He is 6 feet tall and weighs 190

pounds.

JIM HUGHES - Hughes is a sophomore end, 20 years old, 6-1, 190 pounds, from

Louisville, Ky., where he played for Coach Denes at Male High School. Hughes

is an outstanding pass receiver and is a rugged man on defense.

WINTON BOONE - Boone is a 6-foot, 175 pound end from Corbin, Ky. He is 20

yeaTs old. The sophomore will add reserve strength to Western Kentucky this

season. He played on Bill Tucker's 1955 Corbin State Championship team.

13 JACK THEUERKAUF - Theuerkauf is a big senior tackle who returned to the Hill-

toppers last year after four years in the service. His showing last season leads

Coach Nick Denes to believe that he will help make the Western Kentucky line rou-

gh for the opposition. He weighs 215 pounds, is 6 feet 2 inches tall and 25 years

old. Theuerkauf is from Evansville, Ind.

OON ANDERSON - "Andy" Anderson is a senior tackle from Knoxville, Tenn. He weighs 210 pounds, is 6 feet 2 inches tall, and 21 years old. Anderson and Theuer- kauf are two of the largest men on the Western team and are expected to make it

rough for the opposition.

CLARENCE BAKER - Baker Is a 27 -year-old senior guard from Portsmouth, Va., and Is another strong lineman. He Is 5-8 and weighs 185 pounds.

HERB WASSOM - Wassom is a senior guard from Spring City, Tenn. Wassom's abillty and speed make him an outstanding linebacker. He Is 6 feet tall, weighs

200 pounds, and Is 20 years old.

LARRY NUTTER - A standout for several seasons, Nutter should put a lot of pow- er In the Western Kentucky line this season. The senior tackle Is 6-1, weighs 215

pounds, and Is 21 years old. He Is from Sheffield, Ill.

BUCK LAWSON - Lawson, a Bowling Green High School product, is expected to fill the starting assignment at center for Coach Frank Griffin's 1959 Hilltopper line. Lawson is a well-performing, 5-foot ll-inch, 195-pound, 21-year-old senior.

DAVID MILLER - Miller, one of Western's outstanding halfbacks last year, is expected to be a scoring threat this season for the Hilltoppers. The 160 pound senior halfback Is from Corbin, Ky . He is 5-10 and weighs 160 pounds. Miller,

20 years old, was hampered by injuries last season.

BOB BRADFORD - Bradford Is a burly 200-pound junior guard from Bellevue, Ky.

His all-around rugged play gives Western an outstanding player at the guard posI­ ton . He is 21 years old and Is 5 feet 10 inches tall. 14 JACK POYNTER -Poynter, a 6-foot sophomore tackle, weighs 200 pounds and will be an aid to Western's big line. The 19-year-01d tackle is from Owensboro.

BUDDY MESSER - Messer, a 6-foot, lSS-polIDd, 21-year-old sophomore fromMt.

Sterling, Ky., played halfback for Dawson Orman. Messer will go as an end for

Western this season.

BILL UNDERlllLL - Underhill is 5-9, 190-pound guard who showed promise dur­ ing freshman play last year. He is a 25-year-old sophomore from Louisville,Ky.

DANNY MACATEE - Macatee is a 19-year-old sophomore end from Newpon, Ky.

He is expected to add reserve strength to the Western Kentucky team this season.

Macatee is 5-11 and weighs 165 pounds.

JOHN BROWN - Brown is a 19-year-old sophomore guard from Shelbyville, Ky.

The 5-8 guard is one of the heavyweights on the line, weighing 200 pounds.

JACK WOFF - Woif is a much needed 190-pound tackle from Ponsmouth, Va. The

6-1 sophomore is 20 years old.

CARL BRUNSON - Brunson, a 19-year-old sophomore from Evansville, Ind. , will add reserve to the Western backfield. The fullback is 5-8 and weighs 165 pounds.

LLOYD NASH - Nash, a 5-10, 180-polIDd halfback, is from Owensboro, Ky. Nash showed promise during spring training. He is a 20-year-old sophomore.

BOBBY ARMOUR - Armour, a 21-year-old freshman, is from Bowling Green, Ky.

The 5 -10 halfback weighs ISS polIDds. He played for Bowling Green High School.

DUNCAN SANFORD - Sanford is a 19-year-old sophomore from Franklin, Ky.

The 6-foot guard played for Franklin -Simpson High School. He weighs 195 pounds and will be used in reserve for Western.

15 JACK JEWELL - Jewell. a 22-year-old jWlior halfback from Owensboro. played some outstanding games for Western Kentucky last season and is expected to be a big help to the Hilltoppers this year. Jewell is 5 -10 and weighs 180 poWlds.

BOB YOUNG - YOWlg. an outstanding performer during his first two seasons at

Western. will be in the fullback position this year. Weighing 185. YOWlg is 6 feet tall. He is a 21-year-old jWlior from Covington. Ky.

GERALD POYNTER - Poynter is a 21-year-old tackle who excells on offense. He is a player who starred in high school WIder Ralph Genito of Owensboro. Poynter is 6-1 and weighs in at 200 poWlds .

LEWIS JOHNSON - Johnson. a 6 foot. 175-poWld. 20-year-old jWllor from Owens­ boro. also learned his football WIder Genito at Owensboro High School. He stands six feet and weighs 175 . The end is a candidate for a starting position this year at Western Kemucky.

FRANCIS PAYNE - Payne is a jWlior from Atherton High School in Louisville. The speedy fullback last season gave evidence that he will be hard to handle this season.

He is 5-11. weighs 170 and is 20 years old.

DOUG MUNFORD - Munford is a 21-year-old jWlior from Troy. Ohio. The 175- poWld. 6-2 end will aid Western Kentucky this year.

LLOYD WEAVER - Weaver. brother of former Western star Ray Weaver, Is one of the most versatile footballers ever to come to the Western squad. He was an outstanding high school quarterback from Holmes of Covington. Ky .• WIder Wes­ tern graduate Tom Ellis. Weaver. a 5 -11 jWlior. weighs 190 poWlds . He will go as a center for the Western team this season. Weaver Is 21.
