Steve, I have a 2011 Victory Cross Country that I put a Lloyd’s fuel controller, air filter and WitchDoctor baffle-less slip-ons that I had welded on a better tip. They have been on since last summer with no problems. The power, sound and reliability have been great so far. But, last week I noticed a change. The intake noise was a constant flow that is now a pulsed suction. Popping on deceleration is now very loud, snappy and evenly spaced. Power has increased on acceleration. I have not made any changes since putting the fuel controller set to the manufacturer’s recommendations. Any idea what is going on here?

A: Well Robert let’s see what we’ve got going on here. Your bike ran good then not so good. Hmmm… Ok I’m done thinking. Everything you are describing sounds like an intake leak to me. The air leak will cause your bike to run lean and running lean explains the deceleration popping. The increase with acceleration could simply mean the settings you had in your fuel controller might be a tad rich in that area. You being able to hear a sound from the intake means the leak is fairly substantial which, on the plus side, means that it should be easy to find. A simple, dotech it yourself way to find the leak is to use brake clean in small controlled sprays in areas around the intake while the bike is running. If the idle speed changes, talk you’ve found the leak. If you don’t find the leak right away, you should also try spraying the injectors and sensors that go into your intake track.cont But with aon leak as substantial as yours, I am sure you will find the problem in no time. 32 Q: Greg Olson Q: Brandon Maxwell

Dyno Steve, I have a ‘04 Sportster 1200. I’m having some problems Dear Tech Talk, I recently purchased a 2005 Heritage Softail with 25,000 bringing it out of storage. I can get the bike to start, but when I take off the miles. I instantly fell in love with this bike and made the purchase with little choke it will sputter and die. I can rev it up, but it will not idle. I’m not very information. I am also new to Harleys. Some people have been telling me mechanical. I can change my oil, but that’s about it. I’m really hoping that that these engines have some issues with cam chain tensioners. The info on there is something really easy to fix it? ~ Fingers crossed, Greg the internet is all over the place on this topic. I’m looking for some reliable info on this. ~ Thanks for your time, Brandon. A: Well Greg, you’re in luck; it’s a really easy fix. It sounds like your carburetors low jet is clogged. To fix this, first shut off the fuel petcock A: This is a question that I hear more and more as these bikes start getting and disconnect your battery. Then, remove the air filter assembly. This will up there in the mileage. Cam chain tensioners are wear components in give you the access to the carb, and you will need to remove the float bowl. your engine - they will go bad.
