I chose my candidates to the award and these were duly scrutinized for soundness and originality by Gady Costeff. Being an inactive study composer for the last 20 years, I have to say that in the meantime there occurred significant changes in the field (in my humble opinion – not necessarily for the better), changes of which I was not fully aware. Admittedly, one cannot disregard the accelerating technological developments; in the modern era studies are, at least to a certain extent, computer-dependent. Even if the main line is pretty and bears artistic value, the supporting variations heavily lean on computer analysis, when a human brain frequently finds it hard to follow. This, I think, reduces the joy one may derive from studies. It is difficult to enjoy the proceedings of an artistic work in which, even if the main line or the thematic try are interesting in itself, you cannot fathom every nuance and must rely on a software to conclude that a certain move would lead to mate, 90 moves ahead. This being said, I do appreciate all composers who participated in the tourney, honoring my 70th birthday. They have demonstrated a lot of imagination and creativity and invested great effort to deliver their best. For this I am grateful. This judgment expresses my private taste; naturally there may be composers, solvers or aficionados of chess studies at large, who might express a different opinion. There are 12 works in this award, which are ranked as follows: 1st Prize Var. 2833: Gady Costeff White executes the Plachutta theme Gady Costeff by Zugzwang, and not in the usual manner by a piece sacrifice in the focal 1st Prize Hoch 70JT square. This theme appears sometimes in direct problems under the name IRT 2016 Wurzburg-Plachutta, but it is extremely rare in studies. This was done 'd'i'4'd before with two rooks (in an entirely different position) but not with two d'd'd'dR queens, as is shown here. The high placement of this Vladislav Tarasiuk piece is due, partly, to the fact that it is congruent with my personal taste. 2nd Prize Hoch 70JT This is a study in the style of yesteryear: it demonstrates an interesting IRT 2016 play and a final, in which black is forced, due to Zugzwang, to migrate 'd'd'd'd with his king to the h3 square, thus bringing his demise.     Yanofsky, Daniel Abraham (”Abe”) (26.03.1925 - 05.03.2000) First Canadian Grandmaster ever. Born in 1925 in Brody, then Poland, he arrived the same year in Canada, as an eight months young baby. A child prodigy. Brilliant technical play, especially in the endgame. Prominent Winnipeg lawyer and city councillor, Winnipeg, Manitoba, and Mayor of West Kildonan, Manitoba. Awarded the IM title in 1950 (the inaugural year), the GM title in 1964 and the International Arbiter title in 1977. The first chess player in the British Commonwealth to be awarded the Grandmaster title (Apart from German-born chess player Jacques Mieses who moved to England in the 1930s to escape Nazi persecution as a Jew. Mieses became a British citizen late in life, then received the title when FIDE first awarded the grandmaster title in 1950, Mieses was one of the 27 original recipients, and the oldest of them) Yanofsky was British Champion in 1953 and Canadian Champion on eight occasions: 1941 in 1943, 1945, 1947, 1953, 1959, 1963, 1965; his eight titles is a Canadian record (tied in closed tournaments with Maurice Fox). “Little Abie” or “Abe”, as the local newspapers called him soon, was a Child Prodigy. At age of 12, Yanofsky won the championship of Manitoba. He repeated every year through 1942, when nobody else even bothered to show up. Thereafter, Yanofsky was banned from further participation in the Manitoba provincial championship to encourage others to play in it :) At 14, was picked to play at board 2 for the Canadian Team in the Olympiad in Buenos Aires 1939.

    Ingemar Johansson: Glasblåsarens pojke Gideon Ståhlberg 100 år För drygt 100 år sen, den 26 januari 1908, föddes i Surte (strax norr om Göteborg) en pilt som skulle gå till schackhistorien som Sveriges förste internationelle stormästare. I dopet fick han namnet Anders Gideon Thome Andersson-Stålberg – så småningom förenklat och förädlat till Gideon Ståhlberg. Släkten tycks ursprungligen ha varit självägande bönder i Nödinge församling, men i dyningarna efter laga skiftet 1845 och framväxten av en glasbruksrörelse i Surte sökte sig fadern Alfred Andersson (född 1854) till bruket och avancerade från glasblåsare till föreståndare för buteljframställningen och så småningom förvaltare på bruket. Det var en upphöjd position. På äldre dar skulle sonen Gideon gärna excellera i deklamationer av Gustaf Frödings dikter. En av de mest kända är ”Den gamla goda tiden”, där det bl.a. heter: ”Min käring har svälten knäckt, min dotter är brukets skarn, förvaltaren själv är släkt med stackarens första barn.” Frödings miljö är givetvis ett värmländskt järnbruk, men hans rader säger det mesta om bruksförvaltarens sociala ställning vid denna tid. Familjen hörde således till det lilla brukssamhällets toppar och det prosaiska Andersson förbyttes omsider till Stålberg och – som kronan på verket – Ståhlberg. Gideon visade tidigt läshuvud och bestods en ordentlig utbildning. År 1917, vid pass nio års ålder, skrevs han in på Högre Realläroverket för Gossar i Göteborg, Nio år senare lämnade han det med en studentmössa på huvudet. ”Hur det nu gick till”, raljerade Ståhlberg senare. Några betydelsefulla saker hände däremellan. En var att Gideon blev faderlös 1919, en annan att intresset för schack väcktes. Senare skulle han själv berätta hur fascinerad han blev av tidningarnas schackdiagram i samband med Nordiska mästerskapen 1917.

    Boris Gelfand’s Remarkable Comeback Yochanan Afek reports back from the star-studded Netanya International Chess Festival A big International Festival was organised in the coastal Israeli city of Netanya by the Israeli Chess Federation and the local municipality, supported by the generosity of businessman Roman Abramovich, likely best known to the readers as the owner of Chelsea Football Club. It has been quite a while since Netanya last hosted a strong international chess event, but the city has a long and respectable tradition of grandmaster tournaments. They were initially part of the popular Schach-Kait (Chess & Holiday) festival. Over the years various master tournaments were held as well as many editions of a grandmaster crown group, whose winners included the world- class icons Bobby Fischer (1968), Sammy Reshevsky (1969), Lubomir Kavalek (1971 and 1973), and Jan Timman (1975), as well as local heroes Yair Kraidman (1964) and Moshe Czerniak (1965).     BUENOS AIRES AND MAR DEL PLATA Originally by Jan van Reek, 1945 – 2015, www.endgame.nl (now inactive), reviewed and extended 35 Mar del Plata closed invitation tournaments (numbered series!), about 20 major Buenos Aires closed invitation tournaments will be presented, plus famous the Mar del Plata Open series, World Championships & Candidates matches and two Olympiads. After exhibitions and simuls by Géza Maróczy in 1925 & Alexander Alekhine in 1926 given in the city of Buenos Aires, and the famous World Championship match in 1927 between Raul Capablanca and Alexander Alekhine, Argentine chess improved immensely, when many players stayed in Buenos Aires after the Chess Olympiad in 1939, due to the outbreak of World War II. Main immigrants were Najdorf, Eliskases, Stahlberg (later moving to Sweden), or already earlier Pilnik, plus today forgotten chess masters. Strong international tournaments could be held. The new events helped them in survival and gave a training. Keres co-won the Circulo in 1939. Other European players joined after WW II: ie. Euwe, Szabo, O'Kelly, or Pomar had a hard time in Argentina against mentioned Najdorf, Eliskases, Stahlberg, Pilnik, and Argentine born Ju. Bolbochán, Guimard, Rossetto, Sanguineti. Next geographical outsider, not living in South America, who won a tournament, was Gligoric, later Ivkov, Larsen and Pachman, followed in 1960 by Fischer & Spassky, and Korchnoi & Reshevsky, respectively. ➔ Panno became the new top talent: Junior WCC 1953 and first native Argentine GM 1955. Europa habrá de convertirse en el campo principal, aunque no único, de un conflicto que adquirirá proporciones inéditas, del que se derivará un clima de terror y horror, del que el Holocausto será una de sus principales expresiones, alterando en cualquier caso dramáticamente las condiciones de vida de millones de personas e implicando, una transformación geopolítica de vastas dimensiones que terminará por rediseñar el mapa mundial. El ajedrez, que tenía a ese continente como el principal escenario del orbe desde el mismo momento en que el juego ingresó por España e Italia de la mano de los árabes, y por Bizancio y por la futura Rusia (en este caso bajo influencia persa), habrá de replegarse, como toda actividad cultural, en el marco de un contexto tan desfavorable. No debe sorprender entonces, que la FIDE, organización mundial que se había fundado en 1924, se sintiera amenazada en su funcionamiento por lo que se planteó, y luego terminaría por suceder, mudar su sede desde los Países Bajos a la más neutral Suiza en busca de una paz que ninguna localización del Viejo Mundo (“viejo” mas no sabio) podía asegurar.
