Glamorous tales are told of this now famed Summer Waterway. In 1615, Champlain and his Indian friends blazed a trail to this Bay by way of Lake Nipissing and French River thinking to find a path to the Orient. That path was never completed, but in its stead is a story of Indian warfare, the martyrdom of Jesuit missionaries and the pluck and resourcefulness of explorers, fur traders and lumbermen. Over 30,000 islands dot the shores of Georgian Bay— islands among the oldest known to geologists. Of these the first easterly group is the Christian Islands — Faith, Hope and Charity — now Indian reservations of the Ojibway race. Far in the distance are the Blue Mountains of Collingwood, and to the right a group of rocky islands — the Westerns, where stands a friendly lighthouse. There is gentle beauty in the tree-clothed slopes of the shores, a sharp contrast to the rocky pine-clad islands. Canoes, yachts and sail boats ply to and from the mouth of the Severn River — summer cottages and camps form colourful patches along the shores. Westward is Bruce Peninsula where stands Cabot Head, the lime stone cliffs extending to Cape Hurd, and what looks like a flower pot stuck in the waters is Flower Pot Island. High on its rocky cliffs is perched a lighthouse. Still westward close to the boundary line is Cove Island. Midnight, the stars grow brighter, the moon sheds silver spangles across the bay. -

Early on Harry Sr.’s son, Harry “Buddy” Melges, Jr. was involved in operating the family boat building business. Over time, Buddy established an impressive collection of championship titles and Olympic medals. During the 1964 Olympics, Buddy was awarded a bronze medal in the Flying Dutchman and in 1968 won a gold medal at the Pan Am Games. In 1972, he won a gold medal in the Soling in Kiel, Germany — the Soling’s official debut in Olympic competition. In the years that followed, Buddy won over 60 major national and international sailing championship titles. They include the Star in 1978 and 1979; 5.5 Metre in 1967, 1973 and 1983; International 50 Foot World Cup in 1989; Maxi in 1991 and the National E Scows in 1965, 1969, 1978, 1979 and 1983. -

In 1963 or so, my parents and our neighbors in partnership bought an early Tartan 27—the classic S&S design that launched the company. For years, we cruised and raced the boat all over the Northeast as a family of five and thought nothing of staying aboard for a week at a time. When my folks decided to move up in size, they sold the boat to another neighbor, who kept it for 30 years and cruised it all over New England. When he decided to sell, who should step up to buy the then-40-year-old boat but my nephew, who keeps it near Boston and sails it whenever he can…now with a new engine and new sails, but still the same 47-year-old cruiser. So the boat is still in the family.That says a lot about Tartan’s place in the American sailing scene. The boat building company, founded by Ohio native Charlie Britton in 1960, has always been focused primarily on solid, honest boats that appeal to families, whether they are cruising in a Tartan 37 or beating around the buoys in a Tartan Ten. While times change and designs evolve, that fundamental Tartan quality remains the same.In July, I had the chance to test sail the center-cockpit Tartan 5300 Luora, which belongs to Jeff and Linda Lennox. -
