A general condition on the licences requires that the trade effluent shall not contain active viruses, pathogens and or unsterilised body fluids.
In some cases the trade effluent is treated by precept tablets (bleach) or the use of autoclaves (steam at high temperature) in other cases biological hazardous waste is removed from site by the Licencee.
In cases where there is trade effluent due to MRI, CT, or PET scanning, the R.P.I.I (Radiological Protection Institute of Ireland) may also issue a licence.
Cyto-toxic drugs administered in hospitals during chemotherapy may be metabolised by patients either in hospital or at home. They are not specified individually in licences issued but would be covered by the BOD/COD limits.
