COMPUTER Class 6 kindly read the notes of the chapter given below and do the exercises in your computer . Chapter 2 FILE MANAGEMENT-Organisation of data

A file management system is a of software that manages data files in a computer system. File management in windows can be done through Windows explorer or My Computer. Windows Explorer displays the hierarchical list of files, folders, and storage drives (both fixed and removable) on your computer.Windows Explorer can be used to copy, , rename, and search for files and folders. Ø How to move /copy data from one drive to another The difference between move and copy data • When we move data from one place to another ,we move the original data and place it a new place. • When we copy data from one place to another,we create a duplicate data then move that duplicate data to the new place. • Steps to move /copy data from one drive to another are- Double-click Computer or This PC to open Windows File Explorer. Navigate to the folders or files you want to move and right click them. Select Copy or Cut from the given options. Finally, D drive or other drives you want to store the files to, and right click blank space and select Paste.

Ø How to move and copy data from one storage device to another The steps to move the file from one storage device to another storage device are- Open the computer icon ,Select the file/folder you want to move or copy from the local disk.Do the right click and choose cut to move /copy to copy the file/folder.Then click on the on the device like pen drive in which you want that file to be moved/copied.Right click on the blank area and click paste option.

Short cut keys to copy is CTRL+C and cut is CTRL+X and paste is CTRL+V

Ø How to work with multiple applications We can work on multiple programs simultaneously in windows .like we can use paint and word altogether,we can search information on the internet and at the same listen to music as well.

Ø How to search file/folders Open the menu and type a search term in the search field at the bottom .A list of search results appears divided by the location of the results .When you locate the file you wanted, double-click it to open it.

Ø How to search file/folders using wildcard characters Definition : A wildcard character is a special character that represents one or other characters. The most commonly used wildcard characters are the asterisk (*), which typically represents zero or more characters in a string of characters, and the question mark (?), which typically represents any one character.

The asterisk represents any number of unknown characters. Use it when searching for documents or files for which you have only partial names.

For example, if you enter cheese* as your search term, the search might return these items:

cheese cheesecake cheesedip.txt

If you enter *cheese as your search term, the search might return these items:

stringcheese swisscheese sliced.cheese

The question mark represents only one unknown character. Use it when you have a list of files with very similar names, or when you are unsure of a few characters.

For example, if you enter take?.txt as your search term, the search might return these files:

take1.txt taken.txt take2.txt However, it would not find take12.txt because the question mark only covers one character. To find two unknown characters, enter take??.txt as your search term.

you can also use them together. For example, if you want to find all the files that start with home, followed by one or two characters, and ending with any extension, enter home??.* as your search term. Your search might return home45.bak or homer4.txt, but not homeloan.doc.

Ø How to arrange and sort files by name, size and date In windows 7 we can arrange files in many ways.We can arrange the files by type, name, size and date of creation. The steps for arranging are- Click on start button, choose Windows explorer. Now when the windows explorer will open goto Documents .Then on the right side at the top choose option Arranged by,select the desired option. The steps for sorting are- Arranging folder contents is different from sorting those contents. You may want to sort a folder's contents by filename, file type, file size, or the date the file was modified. Whatever view you're in, you can sort a folder's contents by following these steps: Right-click in an open area of the details pane and select Sort by from the pop-up menu. Select how you want to sort: Name, Date Modified, Type, or Size. Now select whether you want the contents sorted in Ascending or Descending order.
