Andv's Favorite Milk Oualitv Dairv Comp Commands

Bulk Tank SCC Contribution: : ECON Select 6

This gives you the contribution of each cow to the bulk tank SCC. I in most herds, the top 1% high SCC cows usually contribute less than 20o/o of the total SCC. When you see the number go to 25o/o or higher. you know that high producing cows are the main contributors. You can see the effect of removins cows from the herd on the bulk tank SCC.

General Herd Information Command: Sum milk dim scc lgscc prvlg logl drylg for milk>o lact>O by lctgp

This gives you a quick summary of each lactation to review. It puts all factors on one page so you can determine areas of concern.

Herd SCC Status: Command: Sum lgscc=4 lgscc=6 for lgscc>O by lctgp

This gives you the status of the SCC of all cows on test by lactation group and by herd. It will show you the number and percentage of cows with SCC of 200,000 and less, the number and percentage of cows with SCC of 201,000 to 800,000 and the number and percentage of cows with SCC over 800,000. My goal is to have least 80% of all animals in the herd under 200,000. I want at least 85% of first lactation animals, 80% of second lactation animals, andl5o/o of third/older lactation animals with SCC under 200,000.

New Infection Rate: Command: Sum lgscc:4 prvlg:4 for lgscc>O prvlg>O by lctgp

This command only compares cows that were tested last month to the same cows tested this month. It shows you the actual change without any impact from fresh cows or dried off cows. My goal is to have all lactation groups and the herd have new infection rate of 7o/o or less. This is an excellent command to run after a chanse has been made to see if the effects were good or bad. Annual Fresh Cow Status: Command: Sum logl:4lo91=6 for logl>0 by lctgp

This command will give you the status of the SCC on first test after calving for the herd and by lactation group. This will show you the percentage and number of cows with SCC under 200,000, between 201,000 to 800,000 and over 801,000. The goal is to have the herd and all lactation groups have 15Yo or less of the animals over 200,000.

Quarterly Fresh Cow Status: Command: Sum logl:4 lo9l=6 for logl>0 dim<100 by lctgp

This is the same command as above but limits the results to cows fresh over the last quarter. This can also be limited to a month if you choose. I like this command because I can see if things are improving or getting worse over the annual trends. The goals remain at l5%o or less over 200,000 for the herd and each lactation group.

Alert Cow From Recent Test Command: LIST ID LACT DIM MILK SCC PSCC FOR SCC>500 PSCC<200 DOWNBY SCC \P

This list shows all animals that had a low SCC last month and are now over 500,000 this test. I consider these cows the ones that you want to focus on for the month rather than spending a lot of on chronic high SCC cows. I usually culture and CMT these cows and then determine a plan based on those two pieces of data.

It is important to note that many on farm Dairy Comp programs have had items altered so you may not find the items I have listed above. It may be necessary to create some of the items again especially if they have been eliminated from the file and replaced by odd items used on a dairy. All Dairy Comp programs do come with the standard items I have listed.

The key is to measure what is going on with the milk quality on each dairy on a monthly basis. There are many ways to accomplish this but the most important thing is to measure the same way each month and compare those results. I have found Dairy Comp to be one of the most useful tools for dairies I work for resardless of size.
