V\1 It is a matter of great pride that the first ever Triennial Conference of ICOM-CC r (International Council of Museums - Committee of Conservation) in Asia is being hosted by India. The five-day conference is being organized by the Ministry of Culture, Goveniment of India and the National Research Laboratory for Conservation of Cultural Property (NRLC), Lucknow from 22-26 September 2008 igyan Bhawan, New Delhi.

India is known for its rich and vast cultural heritage. It's an invaluable asset which if properly preserved and conserved can add a new dimension to the overall growth and development of the nation. In this backdrop, the Triennial Conference . of ICOM-CC, which will bring together the biggest numbers of conservation professionals,.in the field of cultural heritage at New Delhi, assumes a special significance. I am sure you would agree with me that all individuals, iustitutions- and organizations having stakes in the cultural heritage of the country should take advantage of this opportunity by not only enhancing their knowledge base active participation in the conference but also by contributing significantly in its deliberations, which, I am sure, will start a strong conservation movement not only in India but the entire Asia Pacific region.

Keeping in view the above, I would request that institution under your control should be prominently present during the conference. This can be done in two ways by nominating professionals as delegates ofconference and by showcasing the cultural heritage ofthe State and its upkeep by t^ing a stall in the exhibition hall on the venue of the conference.

PRESS RELEASE

The Department has organized an exhibition on the anniversary of First War of India's lndependence-1857 in the office premises 4^ Floor, B Block, Sinchai Bhawan, Sector 5, Panchkula. The original documents, photographs have been displayed in this exhibition.

The Exhibition was inaugurated by Shri D.R. Chaudhary, Member, Administrative Reforms Commission, Haryana on may, 2009 at 11.00 a.m.

Dr. Rajwanti Mann, Deputy Director, Archives Department has said that the main aim to display these records is to create the awareness about the heritage of the State preserved in this Department in the form of records among the public in generai and students in particular.

The main exhibits displayed in this exhibition are a map of Fiaryana of the year 1808, document of 1836 depicts hanging of Shams-ud-din Khan for the murder of Mr. W. Fraser, Commissioner of Delhi, Telegram dated 10^^ May, 1857 reporting about the state of 60^^ and 5^^ Regiments, Letter dated 2"^ October, 1857 depicting that Rao Tula Ram took his stand in a small fort at Rampoora (Rewari) and collected Ranghars against the British, Orders of the Government to seize the property of Amir Ali Khan s/o Dalle! Khan of Kunjpura, a letter reporting the murder of Mr. Cliford, a Civil Servant at Sohna, Fight near Narnaul, Memorandum of Intelligence, Sale of seized land of Mangali and Hazampur villages of District Hisar for taking part in the First War of Independence, Mahwan Engagements, Proclamation of Queen Victoria regarding taking over the Rule of British East India Company directly under Crown, Arrest of Mahatma Gandhi at Palwal, a note on Sir Chhotu Ram, Civil Disobedience- exhortative speech delivered by Pt. Neki Ram Sharma, Breaking of Salt Law Bhiwani, a list of Dangerous Political Agitators including Shri Ranbir Singh Hooda father of Shri Bhupinder Singh Hooda, Chief Minister, Haryana and detailed programme of Pt. Jawahar Lai Nehru's visit to Punjab. Besides this, number of rare books and manuscripts has also been displayed in the exhibition.

National Archives of India as well as the State Archives have been celebrating "Archives Week" generally in the month of November every year since 1978 with a view to focus public attention on the importance of Archives and to highlight the role of Archival Institutions in preserving them for posterity. The Archives Week Celebrations have been found very informative for students of schools, colleges and universities and it has served to educate them on the value of Archives for understanding and appreciating our documentary heritage. 2. I take this opportunity to inform you that this Department intends to celebrate Archives Week in the second half of November, 2008. Exhibitions, functions in the schools and colleges on archives including declamation, debates and plays may be organized during this week at the district headquarters. 3. I would, therefore, request you to kindly give your patronage and guidance to the Archives Department for celebration of this week. In this regard Assistant Director, Archives will be in touch with you. Kindly make it convenient to organize functions highlighting importance of the Archival heritage.
