“Education is the key to unlocking the world, a passport to free- dom.” – Oprah Winfrey. Campion remembers….. Grenfell, Two Years On.

Two years ago, 14 June 2017, a fire had broken out of Grenfell tower and the whole building had caught on fire. This had happened in North Kensington, West London. That morning it had caused 72 deaths and two victims who later on died, more than 70 others were injured and 223 people escaped. The victims

The majority of the people on the 22nd and 23rd floor had suffered in the devastating fire. The first victims were named as Syrian refugee Mohammed Al Haj Ali, 23, and artist Khadija Saye, 24. Mohammed Al Haj Ali, 23 was the first to be found and the first to be given a funeral. Khadija Saye shared a flat with her mother who also died in the fire. Mary Mendy, 52, was described as Khadija's mum was described as a "wonderful sister and incredible aunt" by devastated family members. On behalf of the family, her sister Betty Jackson said, “Your heart was pure, your soul was one of a kind.” "You will be missed for a life time.” “You will remain forever in our hearts.” Berkti Haftom, 29 had died while being pregnant alongside with her 12 year old son Biruk. A cousin, Simon Michael, 10, said Biruk always looked after him. He said Biruk was always good with secrets, adding: “Let me tell you a secret, I wish I was with you there that night, but don’t tell my mum, I won’t forget you, brother.” These were only a few of the victims there are many more.

Grenfell fire anniversary Earlier this year on Friday 14th June 2019 there was a march for the anniversary of the Grenfell Tower fire that had occurred two years ago. Many people were there family members, people of all ages among them was the poet and playwright Benjamin Zepha- niah and rapper Stormzy who all wore green. Crowds of thousands and thousands came to show solidarity to those 72 people that had suffered. Coming to show their respects not a single person made a noise you could only here the babies crying it is said; all the rest of the tears fell silent.

How do we make fashion sustainable?

The words sustainable fashion are everywhere nowadays and no one really seems to be listening. There’s ads, brands, influencers and magazines with countless mentions of sus- tainable fashion. It seems like a great idea, but there’s one thing- it’s all so expensive. Most sustainable brands are high profile brands that will cost you so much more than a fast fashion high-street brand. For example, a dress from Reformation (a popular sustaina- ble fashion brand) would cost £255, but a dress in the same style from fast fashion brand New Look would only cost you around £20. The only difference in the dresses is the dam- age it causes to the environment. Fast fashion is contributing to climate change and global warming. But how can we combat this? There’s many alternatives to buying expensive sustainable clothes, and there’s many ways to stop buying fast fashion also. Buying sec- ond-hand is one of the best ways to shop. Apps like Depop and Vinted are great for buying and selling vintage clothes that’ll look great and won’t hurt the planet. Personally I have bought and sold lots of pairs of shoes and pieces of clothing from Depop, and it feels great to know you’re doing a good job for the environment. Charity shops, vintage stores and kilo sales are also a good way to shop for sustainable clothing at cheap prices, and there is many up and down the country as they are becoming more and more popular.

Kiera Edgar Campion commemorates….. The Poppy Appeal

In the days leading up to 11 November, you will see people on the TV, on the streets and in your school, wearing a poppy! But why do they wear this and what does it mean? Poppies are used remember those people who fought in the war for us and risked their lives. The poppies signify the flowers, which grew on the battlefield, after world war 1 ended. Wearing poppies like this helps to raise money for people who are in the military and their families. However, the other percentage of the money goes to running charities, their premis- es, staff, fundraising and other activities such as the Festival of Remembrance (at the Royal Albert Hall), or the National Memorial Arboretum (at Alrewas and Remem- brance Tours). But when did it start? Wearing poppies like this was to raise money to help people who had fought in wars, in 1921 (the year the Royal British Legion was found). However, back then, the poppies weren’t made out of paper, like they are today. They were made out of silk and sold out straight away, raising more than £106,000, to help the soldiers, who had retired or were no longer working in the army. If you want to join in with this movement or even know someone, who fought in world war 1, a good way of doing this would be to wear a poppy or any other inter- pretation – a bracelet, necklace or pins. Many schools and local shops around the UK sell poppies including our school, near the main reception, so why not help out families and loved ones, by simply wearing one! ‘Wear your poppy with pride!’

Euphoria: A show finally getting teens right?

The explicit and disturbing scenes in Euphoria may shock you, but believe it or not; it’s pretty realistic. Other teen shows like Riverdale or 13 Reasons Why have all tried to depict teens well but have all failed, until Euphoria changed everything. The show follows Rue Bennett, a recovering drug addict and many other teens with different problems. It covers many different topics such as so- cial media and its effects on society, abusive relationships, mental illness, body confidence and sexuality. From the soundtrack to the clothes the characters’ wear there’s something so dreamy and beautiful about it in some moments, but the next moment is depressing and dark. I think this represents teens emotions very well, one moment you feel dreamy and child-like and then next moment your angsty, rebellious and angry at everything. the show seems to be a hit- as its already confirmed for a second season and filming starts in 2020. Euphoria is available to download on HBO and Sky, and I highly recommend it.

A Series Of Unfortunate Events: The Bad Beginning

A series of unfortunate events is about three siblings (the Baudelaire’s) who’s lives get flipped upside down and inside out. If you’re into things with sugar and spice with a happy ending. I’m warning you to LOOK AWAY. The Baudelaire family live in a great mansion living happily ever after, well that’s what they thought. It was a great day to go to the beach; the sky was grey and foggy and only the Baudelaire children were at the beach. This was perfect weather for Vio- let to skip rocks. Violet was the oldest, she was an inventor and when she has good ideas she always tied her hair back because the last thing she wants is a strand of hair blocking her view. Klaus was a bookworm his family had a humongous library and him only being twelve read them nearly all. He and the only boy. Last but not least little Sunny Baudelaire she was the youngest and a little biter, she could speak very little words. On that cloudy day they received the worst news possible, “Your parents have per- ished in a terrible fire.” They get sent to Count Olaf an evil man who is after the Baudelaire fortune and need to find a way to escape him and his disgusting theatre troupe.

I have read the book once and watched both the movie and TV show. It is dark but uplifting at times but every time something good happens to the Baudelaire orphans, Lemony Snicket will al- ways find a way to get you down. I love this book and I totally recommend it to anyone who likes sto- ries or books like this, or to anyone who is brave enough to know the terrible tale of the Baudelaire orphans. Not enough, so if you want to read more there are 12 more books!

5 STAR VILLA!

An amazing Performance from Dean Smith’s Men as Villa strike 5 past rele- gation rivals Norwich City

On Saturday, 5 October 2019, New-boys, Norwich City, hosted, also recently promoted, Aston Villa in a domination of a performance by the claret and blue army. At the start of the game, the hosts were looking to end a streak of two premier league losses, while the visitors were looking to get their first away points of the prem- ier league season Right from the start, the visitors looked comfortable and the better team, with 1 shot out of 4 on target and 53.8% possession, while having a pass accuracy of 79%. It was the visitors to strike first, 13 minutes in a ball into the box by ended in a Wesley goal, bringing the Brazilian’s tally for the season at a respectable 3 goals, mak- ing it two away games in a row where the Brazilian has put Villa ahead. 24 minutes in, a good shot by El Ghazi was parried by stand-in ‘keeper McGovern, who gave the villa a corner. From that corner a Wesley header was fired into McGovern, where he dropped the ball into El Ghazi, with the post denying him this time. We had to wait just 4 minutes for the next piece of action, where a ball from met Wesley on the line, bringing him an easy goal, making it his first ever double for the Villans, and giving him his 4th in 8 games. 7 minutes later, Disaster struck for Norwich, Conor Hourihane was brought down in the box and Andy Madley rewarded the visitors with a penalty, with which star man Wesley hoped to get his hat- trick, the first of the premier league era for villa, since a fellow striker villa signed from Belgium, Christian Benteke, netted 3 against Queens Park Rangers, in April of 2015, Unlucky for the Brazilian however, His initial shot was saved by McGovern, who also parried wide the follow-up. The game stayed the same right till the end and resulted in a 5-1 win to Aston villa. With this being the first away win for the claret and blue army in the premier league since opening day of the 15/16 premier league season, with Rudy Gestede giving villa a 1-0 victory away at Bournemouth. At the end of the half, the visitors were leading 2-0, with 9 shots on target out of 16, and 47.3% possession. The second half had barely begun, when a good bit of play on the 48th minute saw an El Ghazi pass lead into the feet of , who, with a good little finish, put the visi- tors 3 up. It took 12 minutes for the next notable play to happen, where, following an Emiliano Buendia Error, Matt Targett, rather frustratingly, had the ball taken off him by Hourihane, who sent a beautiful little ball into the far left corner of the goal, sealing the 3 points for the visiting side. After 22 minutes of no action other than a couple substitutions, Wesley gave the ball to who put an absolute beauty into the top right corner, giving the visitors a fifth, the first time they had done that in the Premier League since they beat Sunderland 6 -1, under the lights of , with Paul Lambert at the helm, back in April 2013. It didn’t take long for another goal however, when 6 minutes later, a ball towards Tom Heaton, caught the English ‘keeper off guard, resulting in Josip Drmic slot- ting home, giving the hosts something to be happy with coming away from the gamer and putting a slight blip on villa’s almost perfect performance up to that point.
