November 28, 2016 US Congress, Stand with Malaysians, Not Our Corrupt Government By Nurul Izzah Anwar Earlier this month, tens of thousands of Malaysians took to the streets to demand free and fair elections and the end of status quo's endemic corruption. While our demands are not new, our protest demonstrated the remarkable fortitude of the Malaysian people in the face of mounting oppression by Prime Minister Najib Razak. In an attempt to prevent the rally, Najib took a page out of the dictator’s playbook and ordered the preemptive arrest of 11 opposition organizers. One of those detained is well known Malaysian activist, Maria Chin Abdullah, the 60-year-old chairwoman of the Coalition for Clean and Fair Elections (Bersih). She remains in solitary confinement under the draconian Security Offences Act — catering to hardcore terrorists, which vaguely criminalizes activities “contrary to parliamentary democracy.” Amnesty International has already designated those arrested as prisoners of conscience who must be released immediately and unconditionally. Abdullah joins my father, former Deputy Prime Minister and opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim, as one of many political prisoners in Malaysia. Currently imprisoned on politically-motivated charges, Anwar posed a threat to the ruling regime when he championed a multi-ethnic and multi-religious opposition movement that garnered 52 percent of the votes in the 2013 parliamentary election — a victory that was ultimately rendered hollow by the government’s gerrymandering. The United Nations has denounced my father imprisonment as arbitrary and in violation of international law. Dozens more have been targeted, harassed, or imprisoned under the false pretenses of national security simply because they dare to speak out against Najib’s authoritarian tendencies and corrupt practices. -

The terminology was was originally aimed at countering negative propaganda proposed by the Malaysian Indian and the Malaysian Chinese, who accused that the special socio-political privileges given to the indigenous Malaysian peoples in the Malaysia’s Constitution and the affirmative New Economic Policy of 1971 have been a severe strategy to condemn the Indian and the Chinese Malaysians. On the other hand, the Malays in Malaysia traced the idea of Malay political hegemony from the political situation in the period of Malay kingdom of Melaka in the 15th century. In this article, I proposed that what is now called Malay political hegemony could be compared to what was called beschikkingsrecht in Dutch language, in the colonial period of Indonesia. This terminology referred to the sovereignty of the native peoples in Malay Archipelago over their land and political state. Lastly I find debate on the Malay political hegemony in Malaysia recently, whether between the natives versus the immigrants, or between the ruling Malays versus the opposition Malays, are pertaining with 6 articles in the Constitution and Act of Malaysian Armforce of 1972. This set of rules is knownly called Wasiat Raja-raja Melayu (The Wasiat of the Malay Sultans). -

Ia menegaskan bahawa sesuai dengan perubahan sosio-politik, ‘bidang makna’ yang berkaitan konsep ‘intelektual’ dan lokasi sosial sebenar para intelektual itu sudah mengalami perubahan besar sepanjang abad dua puluh. Ini menimbulkan cabaran kepada sejarahwan yang ingin melihat masa lampau dengan kaca mata masa kini tetapi yang sepatutnya perlu difahami dengan tanggapan yang ikhlas sesuai dengan masanya. Selain itu, ia juga menimbulkan cabaran kepada penyelidik sains sosial untuk mengelak dari mengaitkan konsep masa lampau kepada konsep masa terkini supaya dapat memahami sumbangan ide dan kaitannya kepada masa lampau. Sehubungan itu, makalah ini memberi bayangan sekilas tentang persekitaran, motivasi dan sumbangan beberapa tokoh intelektual yang terkenal di Malaysia. Kata kunci: A Samad Ismail, intelektual, wacana, Alam Melayu ABSTRACT This paper focuses on the discourse in Malaysia concerning intellectuals. It asserts that in concert with political and sociological changes, the ‘field of meanings’ associated with the concept of ‘the intellectual’ and the actual social location of intellectual actors have undergone considerable change during the twentieth century. This flags the challenge for historians who are telling today’s stories about the past in today’s terms, but who have to try to understand that past on its own terms. Further, it flags the challenge for social scientists to not merely appropriate the concepts of past scholars in tying to understand the present, but rather to also understand the context in which those ideas had relevance. -

Malaysia: the 2020 putsch for Malay Islam supremacy James Chin School of Social Sciences, University of Tasmania ABSTRACT Many people were surprised by the sudden fall of Mahathir Mohamad and the Pakatan Harapan (PH) government on 21 February 2020, barely two years after winning the historic May 2018 general elections. This article argues that the fall was largely due to the following factors: the ideology of Ketuanan Melayu Islam (Malay Islam Supremacy); the Mahathir-Anwar dispute; Mahathir’s own role in trying to reduce the role of the non-Malays in the government; and the manufactured fear among the Malay polity that the Malays and Islam were under threat. It concludes that the majority of the Malay population, and the Malay establishment, are not ready to share political power with the non- Malays. Introduction Many people were shocked when the Barisan National (BN or National Front) govern- ment lost its majority in the May 2018 general elections. After all, BN had been in power since independence in 1957 and the Federation of Malaysia was generally regarded as a stable, one-party regime. What was even more remarkable was that the person responsible for Malaysia’s first regime change, Mahathir Mohammad, was also Malaysia’s erstwhile longest serving prime minister. He had headed the BN from 1981 to 2003 and was widely regarded as Malaysia’s strongman. In 2017, he assumed leader- ship of the then-opposition Pakatan Harapan (PH or Alliance of Hope) coalition and led the coalition to victory on 9 May 2018. He is remarkable as well for the fact that he became, at the age of 93, the world’s oldest elected leader.1 The was great hope that Malaysia would join the global club of democracy but less than two years on, the PH government fell apart on 21 February 2020. -
