Dr. Georgia Harkness, professor of applied theology at the Pacific School of Religion, Berkeley, California, has her own list. She calls them "occupational hazards." At the fifth annual ministers' convo­ cation at the University of Southern California she described them · as: " ( 1) spiritual pride; ( 2) feverish overactivity; ( 3) underactivity; ( 4) eagerness for praise; ( 5) accepting material standards of success; ··.· · ( 6) bad night of the soul; ( 7) double-mindedness, in which one wishes to please God but also wants to ~lease himself." Ministers are frequently the object of analysis. They have got used to it. Nevertheless, th~:;ir ,profession is so sensitive and idealistic that they can never afford to be wholly indifferent to criticism. Perhaps no profession undergoes greater self-criticism than does the ministry of the gospel. This is just as it should be. Dr. Harkness takes a crack at ministerial careerism when she says that ministers wish for promotion like anyone else, and often let this desire unconsciously set their standards. "A minister's pride often leads to restless activity without sufficient prayer or trust in God," she said. "He reacts by losing working efficiency and falls into spiritual frustration. For all these seven sins, God has a corrective if one is humble, earnest in self-examination, prayerful, and trustful." Apart from criticism, we believe that the standard of the ministry ranks as high as any other professional group. But every minister, if he is to follow the pattern of the apostle Paul, will have to say frankly with him, "Not as though I had already attained, either were already perfect. I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus."-The Watchman-Examiner. A few guilty names will be exposed. More recent leaders have perpetuated this wrong teaching unknowingly. Unless they have researched the Archives, and the 1888 Materials by Ellen White, and the original Jones‘ and Waggoner‘s writings, [not just the censored ones], they might not otherwise know what this article reveals. 1 2 I‘m sure most Seventh-day Adventist leaders today are honest God-fearing men and if they stay true to their calling, then they will help to correct this erroneous teaching that still prevails in our church today. This wrong teaching that started long before 1888, but certainly erupted at that time, is very likely keeping the Latter Rain from falling on God‘s people today. It can and will be corrected, God will make sure of that. And the Devil will make war against it, as he always does when truth is brought to the light.

    The Arts – Foundational Element of an Impactful Life By Darla Martin Tucker The world began through an unfathomable act of brilliant creativity that human minds cannot comprehend. Earthly life, marred as it has become, abounds with innumerable exquisite moments and elements, all the handiwork of the original Artist who expressed Himself and communicated His deep love through creating what previously did not exist. The stated aim and mission of Seventh-day Adventist education is to pursue whole-person development and produce service-oriented, joyful individuals who are deeply connected to and modeled after our Creator God. The visual, performing, and literary arts provide a multitude of avenues for students to develop in this way, to function as “brand ambassadors”—storytellers for our Creator and for His gospel mission and objective to create new lives out of suffering, to give a voice to the marginalized, and to know ourselves and each other in a meaningful way. “The arts give us meaning and help us communicate our stories and experiences across time,” said Terrill Thomas, chair of La Sierra University’s Art+Design department. “Without visual communication…no organization, including the SDA church, would be able to communicate their message to an increasingly connected and visually literate society.” He added, “The only way we can influence the world is to engage with the world and connect our students to art and design careers to every industry around the world.” Alums of La Sierra’s arts programs over the decades have made their presence

Campbell Adventist International Institute of Advanced Studies Cavite, Philippines 1. Introduction “All Christians engage in confessional synthesis,” wrote theologian Carl R. Trueman.1 Some religious groups adhere to a public confession of faith as subject to public scrutiny whereas others are immune to such scrutiny. Early Seventh-day Adventists, with strong ties to the Christian Connexion, feared lest the creation of a statement of beliefs so that some at some point may disagree with that statement may at some point be excluded.2 Another danger was that statements of belief might be used to present making new discoveries from Scripture, or afterward a new truth might be stifled by appealing to the authority of an already established creed. From the perspective of early Sabbatarian Adventists, some remembered the time when during the Millerite revival that statements of belief were used to exclude them from church fellowship.3 These fears were aptly expressed during the earliest organizational developments in 1861 of the Seventh-day Adventist Church.     Delker, Ardella Vernell (Del) (1924–2018) DAN SHULTZ Dan Shultz, emeritus professor of music, Walla Walla University, has researched and written extensively about Seventh-day Adventist music history and musicians. His publications include A Great Tradition–a history of music at Walla Walla University, and the Adventist Musicians Biographical Resource–an encyclopedia with biographies of over 1100 Adventist musicians. He founded the International Adventist Musicians Association, serving as its president for ten years and editing its publications and website for over thirty years. Shultz and his wife, Carolyn (nee Stevens), live in College Place, Washington. Ardella Vernell1 Delker, a vocal soloist and recording artist known professionally as Del Delker, was associated with the Voice of Prophecy radio broadcast and evangelistic ministry for more than fifty years. Early Life Del Delker was born in Java, South Dakota, on October 21, 1924, the younger of two children born to Andrew and Martha Hartmann Delker.2 Her parents divorced before she was born. With the coming of the Great Depression, Martha Delker and her two children, along with her two sisters and a brother-in-law, embarked for California in 1931. When the money saved for the trip ran out in Yakima, Washington, the family worked in a cannery until they had earned Del Delker.     Hardy Dan 11:36-39 Appendix Uriah Smith and the King of the North in Dan 11:36-39 and 40-45 In the Daniel file at the Biblical Research Institute (General Conference of Seventh-day Adventists) in Washington, DC is a paper by Raymond F. Cottrell entitled, "The Pioneers on Daniel Eleven and Armageddon." In that paper Cottrell discusses the development of Uriah Smith's views on Dan 11 against the backdrop of positions then current both within his own denomination (James White) and outside it (the popular Protestant commentators of his day). Smith in relation to exegetes outside his denomination It was Smith's purpose to show that the Seventh-day Adventist system of prophetic interpretation was largely based on positions shared by other religious bodies. Thus, it was not our positions but our synthesis of them, our perspective, that made the Seventh-day Adventist system of prophetic interpretation unique. His initial books on the subject, Thoughts on Revelation (first published 1865) and Thoughts on Daniel (first published 1873), were drawn from articles he had published as editor of the Review and Herald , which at this time was largely written for a non-Adventist readership. At first Smith held that the king of the North in Dan 11:40-45 was Rome. But then he espoused the popular view of his day that it was Turkey--the "sick man of the east." The religious press during the 1870s was filled with speculations about the demise of Turkey as a viable power in Europe and Smith was caught up in this line of thinking.

WARREN BECKER has devoted his life to educating students from all over the world. He was first professor of music at Pacific Union College from 1945-1959, and since 1959 has taught at Andrews University, where he is now emeritus professor of music. Dr. Becker has received numerous honors in his musical career, including the Outstanding Educator in America award. OLIVINE BOHNER teaches English as a Second Language at La Sierra University. Holding an M. A. in English from Michigan State University, she has had wide teaching experience both in the United States and abroad. As a free-lance writer she has authored two books and numerous articles and radioscripts. Her music interests go back to her college days in choral singing—and beyond. DOROTHY MINCHIN-COMM is currently Professor of English at La Sierra University and editor of ADVENTIST HERITAGE. She is now preparing her tenth book manuscript and has written extensively for church papers. Long years of overseas experience have given her an interest in biography and mission problems. ROBERT E. EDWARDS has recently retired from forty-three years of service with the Voice of Prophecy. For twenty-four of those years he was first tenor with the King's Heralds. He graduated from Emmanuel Missionary College (now Andrews University) with a major in theology and a minor in music. WAYNE HOOPER is well known as music director for the Voice of Prophecy and baritone in the King's Heralds Quartet.
