Cartoons & Counterculture
Cartoons & Counterculture Azure Star Glover Introduction Entertainment media is one of the United States’ most lucrative and influential exports, and Hollywood, in Los Angeles County, California, has historically been the locus of such media’s production. While much study has been done on the subject of film and the connection between Hollywood and Los Angeles as a whole, there exists less scholarship on the topic of animated Hollywood productions, even less on the topic of changing rhetoric in animated features, and a dearth of information regarding the rise and influence of independent, so-called “indie” animation. This paper aims to synthesize scholarship on and close reading of the rhetoric of early Disney animated films such as Snow White and more modern cartoon television series such as The Simpsons with that of recently popular independently-created cartoon features such as “Narwhals,” with the goal of tracing the evolution of the rhetoric of cartoons created and produced in Hollywood and their corresponding reflection of Los Angeles culture. Hollywood and Animation In a 2012 report commissioned by the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce, The Los Angeles County Economic Development Corporation acknowledged that “[f]or many people, the words Los Angeles and Hollywood are synonymous with entertainment” (“The Entertainment Industry” 1), and with good reason: Los Angeles’s year-round fair weather first attracted live-action filmmakers in the early 1900s, and filming-friendly Hollywood slowly grew into a Mecca of entertainment media production. In 2011, the entertainment industry accounted for “nearly 5% of the 3.3 million private sector wage and salary professionals and other independent contract workers,” generating over $120 billion in annual revenue (8.4% of Los Angeles County’s 2011 estimated annual Gross County Product), making this “one of the largest industries in the country” (“The 76 Azure Star Glover Entertainment Industry” 2). -
The Complete Stories
The Complete Stories by Franz Kafka a.b.e-book v3.0 / Notes at the end Back Cover : "An important book, valuable in itself and absolutely fascinating. The stories are dreamlike, allegorical, symbolic, parabolic, grotesque, ritualistic, nasty, lucent, extremely personal, ghoulishly detached, exquisitely comic. numinous and prophetic." -- New York Times "The Complete Stories is an encyclopedia of our insecurities and our brave attempts to oppose them." -- Anatole Broyard Franz Kafka wrote continuously and furiously throughout his short and intensely lived life, but only allowed a fraction of his work to be published during his lifetime. Shortly before his death at the age of forty, he instructed Max Brod, his friend and literary executor, to burn all his remaining works of fiction. Fortunately, Brod disobeyed. Page 1 The Complete Stories brings together all of Kafka's stories, from the classic tales such as "The Metamorphosis," "In the Penal Colony" and "The Hunger Artist" to less-known, shorter pieces and fragments Brod released after Kafka's death; with the exception of his three novels, the whole of Kafka's narrative work is included in this volume. The remarkable depth and breadth of his brilliant and probing imagination become even more evident when these stories are seen as a whole. This edition also features a fascinating introduction by John Updike, a chronology of Kafka's life, and a selected bibliography of critical writings about Kafka. Animating Social Pathology: Ontology, Aesthetics, and Cartoon Alienation by Wolfgang Boehm Under the Direction of Professor Greg Smith ABSTRACT This thesis grounds an unstable ontology in animation’s industrial history and its plas- matic aesthetics, in-so-doing I find animation to be a site of rendering visible a particular con- frontation with an inability to properly rationalize, ossify, or otherwise delimit traditionally held boundaries of motility. Because of this inability, animation is privileged as a form to rethink our interactions with media technology, leading to utopian thought and bizarre, pathological behav- ior. I follow the ontological trend through animation studies, using Pixar’s WALL-E as a guide. I explore animation as an afterimage of social pathology, which stands in contrast to the more lu- dic thought of a figure such as Sergei Eisenstein, using Black Mirror’s “The Waldo Moment.” I look to two Cartoon Network shows as examples of potential alternatives to both the utopian and pathological of the preceding chapters. -
INDULGENCES and SOLIDARITY in LATE MEDIEVAL ENGLAND By
INDULGENCES AND SOLIDARITY IN LATE MEDIEVAL ENGLAND by ANN F. BRODEUR A thesis submitted in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Department of History University of Toronto Copyright by Ann F. Brodeur, 2015 Indulgences and Solidarity in Late Medieval England Ann F. Brodeur Doctor of Philosophy Department of History University of Toronto 2015 Abstract Medieval indulgences have long had a troubled public image, grounded in centuries of confessional discord. Were they simply a crass form of medieval religious commercialism and a spiritual fraud, as the reforming archbishop Cranmer charged in his 1543 appeal to raise funds for Henry VIII’s contributions against the Turks? Or were they perceived and used in a different manner? In his influential work, Indulgences in Late Medieval England: Passports to Paradise, R.N. Swanson offered fresh arguments for the centrality and popularity of indulgences in the devotional landscape of medieval England, and thoroughly documented the doctrinal development and administrative apparatus that grew up around indulgences. How they functioned within the English social and devotional landscape, particularly at the local level, is the focus of this thesis. Through an investigation of published episcopal registers, my thesis explores the social impact of indulgences at the diocesan level by examining the context, aims, and social make up of the beneficiaries, as well as the spiritual and social expectations of the granting bishops. It first explores personal indulgences given to benefit individuals, specifically the deserving poor and ransomed captives, before examining indulgences ii given to local institutions, particularly hospitals and parishes. Throughout this study, I show that both lay people and bishops used indulgences to build, reinforce or maintain solidarity and social bonds between diverse groups. -
Verbos Incendium
Verbos Incendium Mythology and the Modern World EDITOR’S NOTE Mythology, particularly in the context of the Indian subcontinent, is a part of our everyday lives. This is true not just for those who belong to particularly religious households but even for those who inhabit urban spaces it is present as allusions, in our everyday speech. When we refer to someone as ‘Kumbhakaran’ or as ‘Vibhishan’ we are subtly acknowledging the endless permutations these stories are capable of manifesting themselves into. Mythology is so deeply rooted in the cultural as well as the religious fabric of certain societies that it impossible to separate them. Personally, some of my fondest childhood memories are of reading the comic-book version of the tales of Krishna, Shiva, or Savitri during summer break. Going to watch the Ramlila with my cousins was a sacred annual ritual. Each Sunday my family, like many others, would gather together around the T.V for the umpteenth re-telecast of B.R. Chopra’s Mahabharat. But what does mythology mean for the millennials? This issue, ‘Mythology and the Modern World’ is an attempt to understand mythology from the perspective of our young writers. Since they study classical literature - Indian as well as European- as part of their curriculum they responded quite enthusiastically to the topic and wrote some very insightful and engaging pieces. We have, as always, attempted to cover a wide range of topics: from interviews and articles to poems and paintings. There is something for everybody. This issue would not have been possible without the support of our department in-charge, Dr Suprita Jha whose kind words of encouragement inspired us to do our best. -

Bradshaw Stanley Abstract. in This Thesis I View Th
Stanley 1 MA VCS Thesis Proposal Title: But We, To Whom The World Is Author: Bradshaw Stanley Abstract. In this thesis I view the animated children’s show Adventure Time as a 21st century “surrogate,” in the sense developed by performance theorist Joseph Roach, for Mark Twain’s Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. By viewing “surrogation,” reconstruction, and even re-enactment as occurring between two artworks rather than two artists, I outline a theory of desubstantialized “body-to-body transmission” that does not rely on “real” or substantial bodies for its support. I conclude by arguing that embodiment can be understood as a formal problem rather than one defined by organic function or phenomenological sensoria. Research Areas. Embodiment, Affect Theory, Formalism, Animation Theory, Performance Studies, American Studies, Childhood Studies, Queer Theory, Film Studies, New Media, Visual Studies, Critical Theory Agenda. Popularly acclaimed as “the trippiest show on television” (Rolling Stone), “groundbreaking…[and] ever more experimental” (AV Club), “sneakily sophisticated” (New York Times), and “dark, gripping and almost nightmarish” (Indiewire), Adventure Time may sound more like an HBO series than a Cartoon Network animated children’s program. Because such accolades are typically reserved for adult (not to mention live- action, "underground" or foreign) productions, it is unsurprising that Adventure Time has been used to satirize conservative cultural anxieties, as in a ChristWire article that, perhaps picking up on the show’s “trippiness” and eagerness to experiment, asks whether it is “a gateway drug to LSD, homosexuality, and the rave lifestyle.” Such satire indicates a bleed between the formal qualities of a work and the embodied responses its viewers, in this case young children, may have: being exposed to trippy and experimental work, the thinking goes, may incline one to seek out trips and experimentation in other contexts. -
