A New Species of Neoseiulus Hughes, with Records of Seven Species of Predatory Mites Associated with Date Palm in Saudi Arabia (Acari: Phytoseiidae)

Box 2460, Saudi Arabia 1Corresponding author. E-mail: [email protected] Abstract Eight species of phytoseiid mites are reported from date palm orchards in Saudi Arabia. Seven of them were first records for this country: Neoseiulus bicaudus (Wainstein), N. conterminus (Kolodochka), N. makuwa (Ehara), N. rambami (Swirski & Amitai), Proprioseiopsis asetus (Chant), P. messor (Wainstein), P. ovatus (Garman). Neoseiulus makuwa and P. asetus are recorded from the Middle East and North Africa for the first time. One new species is described from Bermuda grass, Neoseiu- lus saudiensis n. sp. The new species is most similar to Neoseiulus alpinus (Schweizer) and N. marginatus (Wainstein). A key for identification of the included species is provided. Introduction The predatory mite family Phytoseiidae contains most of the species presently used as biological control agents of mite pests (Kostiainen & Hoy, 1996; McMurtry & Croft, 1997). The fauna of Phytoseiidae in Saudi Arabia is very poorly known, with only ten species previously recorded (Dabbour & Abdel-Aziz, 1982; Al-Shammery, 2010; Al- Atawi, 2011a,b; Fouly & Al-Rehiayani, 2011). Projects are underway to identify the fauna of phytoseiid mites in Saudi Arabia and select the species that may have potential as biological control agents. -

FAIN Summary Description of the new taxa The fo ll owing new taxa of mites (Acari, Mesostigmata) are described FAMILY LAELAPIDAE from afrotropical animals (mammals and a spider) : Andreacarus (Andreacaru s) hemicentetes n.sp., from Hemicentetes nigriceps, from Madagascar; Andreacarus (Andreacaroides) rnallhyssei n.subg., n. sp., Genus Andreacarus RADFORD, 1953 from Cricetomys gambianus, from Nigeria; Ljunghia (Metaljunghia) africana n.sp., from an unidentified mygalomorph spider of Zaire; Pseudancoranyssus ruwenzoriensis n.g., n.sp., from Rhynchocyon This genus included, until now, 8 species, among which stuhlmanni, from Zaire. The subspecies Ljunghia (Metaljunghia) pul 2 were described from the Afrotropical Region, 5 from /einei aname FAIN, 1991 is elevated to the species rank. Australia and 1 from New Guinea. Key-words : New parasitic mesostigmatic mites. Afrotropical Region. We describe herein 2 new species, one from Cricetomys gambianus from Nigeria and one from Hemicentetes nigriceps from Madagascar. On Bactrocera Zonata Eggs (Diptera: Tephritidae) As a Factitious Food

SALEH 1Pests and Plant Protection Department, National Research Centre (NRC), 31 El-Bohoth Street, 12311 Dokki, Cairo, Egypt 2Department of Agricultural Zoology and Nematology, Faculty of Agriculture, Al-Azhar University, Cairo, Egypt (Received: 7 September 2015; accepted: 3 November 2015) Development, survival and reproduction of the generalist predatory mites, Amblyseius largoen- sis (Muma), Neoseiulus barkeri (Hughes), Typhlodromips swirskii (Athias-Henriot), Proprioseiopsis kadii (El-Halawany and Abdel-Samad) and Cydnosus negevi (Swirski and Amitai) were assessed when fed on eggs of Bactrocera zonata (Saunders) (Diptera: Tephritidae) as a factitious food. For N. barkeri and P. kadii, the development was faster, while the reproduction was higher in N. barkeri and A. largoensis than for P. kadii. Survival of immatures of T. swirskii and C. negevi was low on eggs of B. zonata and all failed to develop be- yond the protonymphal stage. A total of 35.4, 31.2 and 19.6 eggs per female, respectively, were obtained when N. barkeri, A. lar- goensis and P. kadii were fed B. zonata eggs. A diet of the peach fruit fly eggs provided the longest female longevity and highest mean total fecundity, which resulted in the highest net reproductive rate (Ro=34.61 and 32.78) and doubling time (DT=1.53 and 1.60) for N. -

The female is re-described from a collection large enough (n = 67) to examine morphometric variations. The measurements of female morphological characters collected from Iran are compared with those given in the original description from Armenia. A key to the species of Transeius recorded from Iran is also given. Key words: Iran, Male, Phytoseiidae, Re-description, Transeius avetianae Introduction Phytoseiid mites are predators of spider mites and other small mites and insects. Some species also feed on nematodes, fungal spores, pollen and exudates from plants, but rarely plant tissue (Chant 1985, 1992; Overmeer 1985). Several members of this family are of great importance in the biological control of spider mites and thrips in greenhouse crop production (Gerson et al. 2003; Zhang 2003). The Phytoseiidae is a large family with worldwide distribution. About 2300 species belonging to over 90 genera are known in the world (Beaulieu et al. 2011; Chant & McMurtry 2007).
