Thousands of you have been picking up a print copy of whatzup each and Wevery week over the past 20 years, and you have no idea how much we appreciate that. But there’s a huge number of people who were barely reading or weren’t even born when we launched this publication, and, as it turns out, most of those people seem to have a problem with paper and prefer to get their news and information from the internet, whether on their computer screens or their phones. That’s not necessarily a bad thing. After all, it saves trees. And the internet is more immediate and flexible than print. Bothersome, time-consuming and expensive steps like imaging negatives, plating a press and distributing copies are eliminated com- pletely. Most importantly, while print requires publishers to fit copy and pictures onto a specific number of pages, the amount of information that can be published on a website is virtually boundless. The problem? The internet is a relatively new and rapidly developing medium. We weren’t exactly spring chickens when we launched this thing in 1996, and keeping up with the times gets increasingly harder with each passing year. But we’re trying. Believe us. We’re trying because, long-term, the survival of this publication depends upon how successfully we navigate this brave new digital world. And this is where you come in: if you’ve not looked at whatzup.com lately, whether on your desktop or your phone, please take a look around. We’re looking forward to hearing what you think. inside the issue • features ROAD NOTEZ .................................. 12 SCREENTIME ................................. 16 Kong Stomps the Competition ANOUSHKA SHANKAR ..............................4 The World to Our Doorstep CURTAIN CALL ................................ 16 Getting Sara Married MARCUS KING BAND ................................5 Their Own Sound CURTAIN CALL ................................ 17 The Children’s Hour FBC BAND ....................................................6 Making New Memories DIRECTOR’S NOTES ....................... 18 Northeast Indiana Playwright Festival • columns & reviews • calendars SPINS ................................................7 Nine Pound Shadow, Peter Silberman LIVE MUSIC & COMEDY ....................8 BACKTRACKS ...................................7 MUSIC/ON THE ROAD .................... 12 Stiff Little Fingers, Nobody’s Heroes (1980) ROAD TRIPZ ................................... 15 Photo: © Joan Marcus OUT AND ABOUT ...............................8 ART & ARTIFACTS .......................... 17 The Dead Deads’ Hometown Tour STAGE & DANCE ............................ 18 PICKS ............................................. 10 Chuck Prophet, Styx THINGS TO DO ............................... 19 Cover by Brandon Jordan DON’T MISS IT! | March 27 • 7:30pm Embassy Theatre | 800.745.3000 Tickets also available at the Embassy Box Office, All outlets, and at www.ticketmaster.com Presented by EMBASSY March 16, 2017 ---------------------------------------------------------------- www.whatzup.com ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------3 BROUGHT TO YOU BY: ---------------------------Feature • Anoushka Shankar -------------------------- Arena Dinner Theatre/Getting Sara Married .....................17 BrandArts ..............................................................................13 C2G Live .................................................................................15 C2G Music Hall......................................................................16 Calhoun Street Soups, Salads, Spirits ...............................8 The World to Our Doorstep Columbia Street West ............................................................9 By Mark Hunter the Beatles and, with George Harrison, put reed instrument; jazz bassist Larry Grena- Cute by Nature Jewelry ..........................................................9 on the first and arguably most famous benefit dier; cellist Caroline Dale; and the all-girl Sitar player Anoushka Shankar has spent concert, the Concert for Bangladesh.
