Kittery, at the commencement of the war for Independence, was composed of the present towns of Kittery and Eliot, and this record takes in the soldiers and sailors of both towns ; but Eliot's soldiers are not mentioned as such in their individual records, but one can tell by the parish or militia company residence of the man, in which town as now constituted he lived ; whenever the word "town" occurs in the following pages, it refers to and means the old town of Kittery as it was in 1775. The town at that time was divided into three parishes, viz., first, or lower ; second, or upper ; and third, or middle. The first parish was that part of the town south of a line, commencing at Ports- mouth Ferry, near the old Rice House, and running north fifty-four degrees east, to the town of York.

    War and Constitution-Making in Revolutionary Massachusetts, 1754-1788 James Fred Hrdlicka Garfield Heights, Ohio B.A. University of Notre Dame, 2010 M.A. University of Virginia, 2012 A Dissertation presented to the Graduate Faculty of the University of Virginia in Candidacy for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy Corcoran Department of History University of Virginia August 2016 Abstract Throughout the Revolutionary era, Americans embraced the capacity of constitutional government at all levels to mobilize power to achieve desired ends. This study explores how and why the inhabitants of one province-turned-state looked to the institutions, practices, and authority of constitutional government to address the myriad challenges they faced between the French and Indian War and the ratification of the United States Constitution. In these years, people in Massachusetts viewed constitutions as more than sets of theoretical propositions designed to limit the power of those who ruled, and they appreciated them not only because they provided opportunities to declare inviolable rights. Constitutions also comprised practical plans of government through which the populace could effectively mobilize power during times of greatest strain. War and its burdens thus formed the essential backdrop as inhabitants considered what made for legitimate and effective government. In no other context did government demand so much of them; at no other times were they presented with as many opportunities to consider the nature of their attachments to the state and to each other. This study properly situates the narrative of constitutional development by first examining the process by which authorities worked with the populace to mobilize men and resources for war and the specific contexts of governance in which that process occurred.

The connection of the medical profession with tho most important social and civil events of modern times forms one of the most interest- ing chapters in the history of man's intellectual endeavors and achieve- ments. The part performed by cultivated men in all times for state and society constitutes indeed the spirit and genius of all that has been accomplished and recorded — is the inspiration which gives true power and greatness to material success. Great wars, great dynasties, great popular movements, are only great as they develop and establish the foremost mental and moral effort which attends them. And so wo watch and ponder upon the learned men, the great craft of scholars, the representatives of those powerful professions for whose cultivation the universities and schools arc founded by all people who hope and desire to perfect their condition on earth. The culture of the church ; how we trace the radiant path it has followed through the great civil commotions ! The mental faculties and accomplishments of the law ; how we admire the grandeur of the work they have performed for man's safety and happiness ! Tho intricate and exhausting and discouraging toil of the physician ; what a combination of mental and moral forces it re- quires, and what a strong and intimate bond it creates between him and the great family of man ! To him, indeed, men are the moving springs of society, asking for strength to perform their work, and offering their confidence to him who, while helping and cheering them in the dark hours, deserves it.

By their service to the Continental Cause they have written this work, In late September, 1974 three people were discussing the possi­ bility and the problems of organizing a Regiment of the Continental Line, Each of us were members of other 18th Century military organizations, namely Militia and Pllinnit or "Minuteman" Companies, and we felt the desire to portray another aspect of the Revolutionary War period, the Continental Army regular soldier, Aside from the practical proble·ms of recreating an authentic Contin,;mt� Lin., unit, we f'aced the very real historical problem of' which unit or Regiment to select as our model. In short, we were searching for an appropriate "ancestor unit." We found one of the best: the XIth Regiment of the Massachusetts Line of the Continental Army, This work is essentially the story of the XIth Regiment, However, since no unit of the Reviblutionary Ivar served completely by itself, in a vacuum so to speak, it becomes necessary to relate much of the general history of the Revolutionary War in this work. We trust that those who read this work will become educated not only to the history of the XIth Regiment but, in a larger sense, to the history of the Continental Army, particularly the Arny of the North, the branch of the Continental Army in which the XIth Regiment served.

    Pension Application for Luther Bailey S.32688 B.L.Wt.101-300-Capt. Issued Nov. 24, 1795-to Nath’l Olcott Assignee. No Papers. Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Plymouth SS. On this thirty-first day of March AD 1818, before me the subscriber, one of the Judges of the Circuit Court of Common Pleas, for the Southern Circuit, personally appeared Luther Bailey of Hanover aged [blank] years, resident in the said circuit, who being by me first duly cautioned according to law, on his oath made the following declaration, by him signed, in order to obtain the provision made by the late act of Congress entitled “An act to provide for certain persons engaged in the land and naval service of the United States in the revolutionary war.”, viz. That he entered into said land service as an Officer the 30th of June 1775 and continued to serve therein till the close of the war as an officer—that he served as a Lieutenant, as an adjutant, and as a Captain--& all in the Massachusetts line.
