Horning King's Park Secondary School Recitative • In Venice a group of secular composers named ‘The Florentine Camereta’ began composing short vocal pieces called monodies. These were a vocal melodic line with a keyboard simple accompaniment over a bass line. Because of the small number of performers involved it meant that the singer was at liberty to sing the rhythms with an amount of freedom in accordance with the nature of the text – as if reciting a poem. This style of singing became known as Recitativo. With some development this then was introduced into the pastoral plays that were popular in Italy at the end of the 16th Century. Written by I. Horning King's Park Secondary School Recitative • Recitative Secco (dry recitative) accompanied only by the continuo instruments. Because of the sparseness of texture long sections of dialogue could proceed quickly and the singer could take more liberties with the rhythm. • Recitative Accompagnato – More instruments were involved and this meant the singer had less freedom with the rhythm but gave the composer more dramatic opportunities. Similar to Recitative Accompagnato in that it was scored for singer, continuo and orchestral instruments. • An Aria is often a reflective moment in an opera, where a single character is alone to share their thoughts and feelings with the audience (just like the soliloquy in a play) Written by I. This line became known as the Obbligato – one is obliged to have the instrumental line playing with the singer. Written by I. Horning King's Park Secondary School Oratorio • Born at the same time as the Opera, Oratorio took it’s name from St, Philip Neri’s Oratory in Rome where the first oratorios were performed. At first they were similar to opera – made up of recitative, aria, chorus and acted out. The main difference was that the text was based on a sacred story usually from the Bible. In time Oratorios ceased to be acted out, and were performed in Churches and concert halls rather than in the theatre. Written by I. Horning King's Park Secondary School PASSION • A Passion is a vocal sacred work telling the Bible story of the Crucifixion, sung in German churches the week before Easter. Text is in German and features chorales as well as recitatives, arias and choruses. Written by I. Horning King's Park Secondary School Passion • A type of Oratorio which is based on the Crucifixion of Christ • Story from the Bible set to music • No costumes or scenery • In German • Accompanied by an orchestra • Can include – Recitative – Aria – Duet – Chorus Written by I. Horning King's Park Secondary School Chorale • The Chorale is a German hymn tune. It is written in four parts for soprano, contralto (alto), tenor and bass. Some of these chorales were used by Bach in his oratorios and cantatas and are usually homophonic in texture. • Music which is sung by the congregation at a church service • In German Written by I. Horning King's Park Secondary School Opera Synopsis Act 1 • A chorus of nymphs and shepherds join Orfeo around the tomb of his wife Euridice in a solemn chorus of mourning; Orfeo is only able to utter Euridice's name. Amore appears, telling Orfeo that he may go to the Underworld and return with his wife on the condition that he not look at her until they are back on earth As encouragement, Amore informs Orfeo that his present suffering shall be short-lived. Orfeo resolves to take on the quest. Act 2 • In a rocky landscape, the Furies refuse to admit Orfeo to the Underworld, and When Orfeobegs for pity he is at first interrupted by cries of "No!" from the Furies, but they are eventually let him in. • The second scene opens in Elysium. Orfeo arrives and marvels at the purity of the air . But he finds no solace in the beauty of the surroundings, for Euridice is not yet with him. He implores the spirits to bring her to him, which they do. Act 3 • On the way out of Hades, Euridice is delighted to be returning to earth, but Orfeo, remembering the condition related by Amore in Act I, lets go of her hand and refuses to look at her, does not explain anything to her. She does not understand his action and reproaches him, but he must suffer in silence Euridice takes this to be a sign that he no longer loves her, and refuses to continue, concluding that death would be preferable. Unable to take any more, Orfeo turns and looks at Euridice; again, she dies. • Orfeo decides he will kill himself to join Euridice in Hades, but Amore returns to stop him. In reward for Orfeo's continued love, Amore returns Euridice to life, and she and Orfeo are reunited. ‘Orpheus and Eurydice’ by Gluck Written by I. Da capo – literally means ‘from the head’ in Italian; in musical application this means to return to the beginning of the music. As a form (i.e. ‘da capo’ aria), it refers to a style in which a middle section, usually in a different tonal area or key, is followed by an restatement of the opening section: ABA.

The word is used to describe the singing of the great castrati, and the repertory of classic Italian airs is known as bel canto music; the term conies up again to cover the operas of Rossini, Donizetti, and Bellini and the school of singers trained to sing them. But Philip A. Duey, in his study of the subject, states: "The term Bel Canto does not appear as such during the period with which it is most often associated, i.e., the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries; this may be said with finality."     UNIT 3: THE BAROQUE. 3.3: VOCAL MUSIC: THE DA CAPO ARIA AND OTHER TYPES OF ARIAS EXPLANATION 3.3: THE DA CAPO ARIA AND OTHER TYPES OF ARIAS. THE ARIA The aria in the operas is the part sung by the soloist. It is opposed to the recitative, which uses the recitative style. In the arias the composer shows and exploits the dramatic and emotional situations, it becomes the equivalent of a soliloquy (one person speach) in the spoken plays. In the arias, the interpreters showed their technique, they showed off, even in excess, which provoked a lot of criticism from poets and musicians. They were often sung by castrati: soprano men undergoing a surgical operation so as not to change their voice when they grew up. One of them, the most famous, Farinelli, acquired international fame for his great technique and vocal expression. He lived twenty-five years in Spain. THE DA CAPO ARIA The Da Capo aria is a vocal work in three parts or sections (tripartite form). It began to be used in the Baroque in operas, oratorios and cantatas. The form is A - B - A, the last part being a repetition of the first. 1. The first section is a complete musical entity, that is to say, it could be sung alone and musically it would have complete meaning since it ends in the tonic. The tonic is the first grade or note of a scale. 2. The second section contrasts with the first section in tonality, texture, mood and sometimes in tempo (speed). 3.

    The Recitative in Trombone Music William J. Stanley ©2019 At first glance, the linking of recitative with a trombone might seem contradictory. After all, the recitative is found most often in opera and oratorio as a speech like style of musical expression performed by singers. But over the past several years, as I was preparing music for performance and assisting students with their preparation, recurring examples of recitative in trombone music appeared more than occasionally. Trombonists will readily recognize concertos by Ferdinand DaviD (1837), Launy Grøndahl (1924) and Gordon Jacob (1956) as often performed pieces that include a recitative. Nicolai Rimsky-Korsakov has provided two well-known solo recitatives for the orchestral second trombonist in Scheherazade, op. 35, and La Grande Pâque Russe, op. 36. These works and several others prompted, at first, an informal list to simply satisfy my curiosity. A subsequent more thorough search has found a large number of works that contain a recitative. To date well over 100 pieces have been discovereD. These span over 250 years and include unaccompanied solos, orchestral solos, pieces with piano, organ, orchestra and/or band accompaniment, and in various ensemble settings for tenor, bass and alto trombones. While that number and breadth of works might be surprising to some, the fact that composers have continued to use vocally influenceD materials in trombone music should be of no surprise to trombonists. We know there is the long tradition of the use of the trombone in vocal settings throughout its history. A thorough examination of this practice goes well beyond the scope and intent of this study, but it is widely known that the trombone was commonly used throughout the sixteenth- and seventeenth-centuries as an accompanying and doubling instrument in sacred settings with choirs.

University of Missouri, 2017 A thesis submitted to the Faculty of the Graduate School of the University of Colorado in partial fulfillment of the requirement for the degree of Doctor of Musical Arts College of Music 2020 1 2 3 Abstract The purpose of this document is to identify and explain the key ideals of bel canto singing and provide reasoned suggestions of exercises, vocalises, and repertoire choices that are readily available both to teachers and students. I provide a critical evaluation of the fundamental tenets of classic bel canto pedagogues, Manuel Garcia, Mathilde Marchesi, and Julius Stockhausen. I then offer suggested exercises to develop breath, tone, and legato, all based classic bel canto principles and more recent insights of voice science and physiology. Finally, I will explore and perform a brief survey into the vast expanse of Italian repertoire that fits more congruently with the concepts found in bel canto singing technique in order to equip teachers with the best materials for more rapid student achievement and success in legato singing. For each of these pieces, I will provide the text and a brief analysis of the characteristics that make each piece well-suited for beginning university students. 4 Acknowledgements Ever since my first vocal pedagogy class in my undergraduate degree at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, I have been interested in how vocal pedagogy can best be applied to repertoire choices in order to maximize students’ achievement in the studio environment.
